ヒマラヤユキノシタ Himalayan bergenia

　ヒマラヤユキノシタは、大きな丸い葉が特徴であり、岩場に育つので、大岩団扇（オオイワウチワ）とも呼ばれます。

　Himalayan bergenia is characterized by its large, round leaves and grows in rocky areas, hence it has an alternative name, "大岩団扇" which means "big rock - paper fan" in Japanese.

洋菊 mum

　洋菊は、欧米で品種改良がおこなわれた、カラフルで華やかなキク科の植物です。英名のマムは、親しみを込めたお母さんの呼び名ではなく、菊の学名であるChrysanthemumを略したものです。

　Mums are colorful and gorgeous plants belonging to the Asteraceae family, which have been cultivated and improved in Europe and America. The English name Mum is not a friendly name for mother, but an abbreviation of the scientific name of the chrysanthemum.

ほろ酔い加減 slightly tipsy appearance

　ほろ酔い加減のように、桜の花びらがほんのり赤くなっています。実際は夕日を浴びていたためでした。

　A faint reddish hue has appeared on the petals of the cherry blossom, as if they were slightly tipsy. In truth, it was because it was soaked in the setting sun.

山茱萸(サンシュユ) Japanese cornel

　サンシュユという発音は、発音しにくいです。そう思う人は少なくないようです。元々漢名を音読みしたので無理があるのでしょう。サン・シュ・ユと区切るのがコツだと教わりました。

　In Japanese, the name of this plant is pronounced as “Sanshuyu”.
　Pronouncing the word “sanshuyu”  is a challenge. It appears that a large number of people believe that way. This might be because it was Chinese reading (On-yomi). I was taught that the trick is to separate it three parts as "san-shu-yu."

ハクモクレン(白木蓮) white magnolia

　ビロードのような厚みのある花びらは、長持ちすることなく散ってしまいます。花の中心部には、上部に多数の緑色の雌しべが、下部に多数のピンク色の雄しべがあり、柱状の構造を形成しています。それは原始的な構造を持つ被子植物で、恐竜と同じ時代から存在していると聞いています。

　The petals are velvety and thick, but they don't last long.  A column-like structure is formed by many green pistils in the upper part and many pink stamens in the lower part of the flower's center. I've been informed that this angiosperm, because of their primitive structure, have been around since the time of dinosaurs.
