オニユリ(鬼百合) tiger lily

　オニユリを下から見上げると、鬼というよりは、上から襲ってくるタコに見えます。

　オニユリは種子をつくることができません。増やすには、ムカゴを利用するか鱗茎を株分けするかです。
　種子をつくらない植物は、３倍体といって染色体の数が、通常2セットのところ、3セットあります。この状態では、配偶子の形成が上手く行われません。３倍体は、植物や一部の動物で自然に発生することもありますが、品種改良などで人為的に作られることもあります。スイカやバナナなどの種なし果物は、品種改良で３倍体を作った結果です。
　種ありバナナを一度食べてみたいものです。

　When I look up at a tiger lily from below, it looks more like a octopus attacking from above than a  tiger lily.

　A tiger lily is incapable of producing seeds. Propagating them can be done by either using propagules or dividing bulbs.
　Plants that don't produce seeds are called triploid, which means they have three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two. In this condition, gamete formation is not properly carried out. Triploids occur naturally in plants and some animals, but can also be created artificially through selective breeding. Seedless fruits such as watermelons and bananas are the result of selective breeding.
　I'm interested in trying a banana with seeds.

白花百日紅 (シロバナサルスベリ) white crape myrtle

　白花百日紅の花穂が風にそよぐ姿は涼しげですが、撮影する私は暑さで焼けこげそうです。

　The white crape myrtle flower spikes swaying in the breeze look cool, but I feel like I'm going to burn to a crisp while taking photos.

　日当たりもよい場所なのに、なんで首が曲がったのでしょう。

コバエ取り器 fruit fly trap

　この時期、ちょっと油断すると、コバエが台所に大量発生して困ります。
　めんつゆと数滴の洗剤を混ぜた液体で、コバエを退治できると聞きました。やってみたところ、驚くほどの効果がありました。
　ごく少量の洗剤を混ぜる理由は、コバエの体が液体を弾くのを防ぐためです。

 

　コーヒーを飲むとき、カップの中を確認してから飲む癖がついてしまいました。

　I heard that a mixture of mentsuyu, Japanese soup base used in noodle dishes, and a few drops of detergent can get rid of them. I executed it and it performed admirably. The reason for adding a few detergent is to prevent the fly's body from repelling the liquid.
 

　I have  acquired the undesired habit of checking the cup's inside before drinking coffee.

浜木綿(ハマユウ) grand crinum lily

　ハマユウとヒガンバナの花は似ていると思いませんか。それもそのはず、どちらもヒガンバナ科の植物です。両者は共に有毒植物です。花は夜に満開になることが多いそうです。

　Don't you think that the flowers of the grand crinum lily and the red spider lily look alike? This is because they are both members of the Amaryllidaceae family. Both plants are toxic. According to people, it's not uncommon for this flower to bloom at night. 

遠泳 long distance swimming

　高校生の集団が、伴走する小舟に見守られながら、隊列を組んで遠泳をする風景は、まさに夏の風物詩です。

　The sight of a group of high school students swimming long distances in formation, watched over by small boats accompanying them, is a typical summer tradition.

芙蓉(フヨウ) cotton rosemallow

　この花は、そろそろ終わりに近づいています。受粉も完了し、内部では果実への成長が始まっていることでしょう。

　This flower is getting close to the end of its lifespan. It appears that the fruit growth inside has already started since the pollination process is over.
