浮釣木(ウキツリボク) trailing abutilon

　ウツキリボクの花の咲く時期は、6月から10月と聞きますが、12月の今の時期に咲いていました。赤い部分は、花ではなく萼です。黄色い花弁から垂れ下がっているものは、ズイチュウと呼ばれる、雌しべと雄しべの合体です。

　They say trailing abutilon bloom from June to October, but they bloomed at this time in December. The red part is the calyx, not the flower. A hanging down object from the yellow petals is a combination of pistils and stamens called gynostemium.

川床 riverbed

　川床は、侵食された柱状節理のように見えます。1000万年程前に、オレンジ色に輝く溶岩流がここを流れたのでしょう。

　キラウエア火山では溶岩流を見るための展望台が設置されているそうです。70年程前の伊豆大島の三原山の大噴火では、マグマを見に行き、その神秘さに魅せられたのか、溶岩湖に身を投げる人が何人もいたそうです。

　This riverbed looks like an eroded columnar joint. I think an orange lave current probably came down here about 10 million years ago.

　I hear there is an observation deck to see lava flows at Kilauea volcano. A large eruption occurred at Mt. Mihara on Izu Oshima about 70 years ago. There were many people who went to see the magma and some of them threw themselves into the lava lake, probably because they were fascinated by the mystery landscape.

カラー calla lily

　漏斗状の花びらに見える部分は葉です。花の本体は、黄色い棒状の部分で、周囲に花が多数密生しています。生物に限らず万物は、本当に多様で不思議だと思います。

　The part that looks like a funnel-shaped petal is actually a leaf. The real flowers are on the yellow bar, where many flowers are densely populated. I think everything, not only living things, is really diverse and mysterious.

透過光 Transmitted light

　透過光で見る、辛うじて張り付いている落ち葉です。次の瞬間に、何処かに行ってしまいました。

　Fallen leaf, which barely clinging, is seen in transmitted light. The next moment it went somewhere.

見納め took a one last look

　思いかけず、紅葉を見ることができました。これで見納めと思います。

　Unexpectedly, I was able to look the autumn leaves. I think this was the last opportunity to look at the autumn leaves.

アロエ aloe

　アロエを見かけることはよくありますが、花を見るのは初めてです。咲かせるコツが、何かあるのでしょうか。

　We see aloe in everyday life, but it's my first time I see its flower. I wonder if there's some secret to make it bloom.

石蕗(ツワブキ) leopard plant

　花の少ないこの時期に、黄色い花を咲かせるツワブキです。日陰でも育ち、葉柄を食べることもできるそうですが、ちょっと硬そうですね。

　It is a leopard plant that blooms yellow flowers at this time when there are few flowers. It grows even in poor sunlight, and they say you can eat its stems, but it looks a bit hard.

磯菊(イソギク) ajania pacifica

　イソギクが、過酷な環境にある岩場に張り付いて咲いていました。

　Ajania pacificas is blooming on the rocks in a harsh environment.

シャクナゲの実 rhododendron fruit

　暗闇にシャクナゲの花に包まれるのは幻想的だろうと、テント持参でシャクナゲのメッカである十文字峠に登ったことがあります。もう何十年も前のことです。

　I thought it would be fantastic to be surrounded by rhododendron flowers in the dark. I climbed the "Jumonji Pass", where is a mecca for rhododendrons, with my tent. It was decades ago.

譲葉(ユズリハ) Daphniphyllum macropodum

　名前の由来は、若葉が出ると前年の葉が席を譲るように落葉することからです。人生訓のような名前ですね。

　The name comes from the fact that when young leaves appear, the last year's leaves fall to give their places. It's a name like a life lesson.

海と空と雲 sea, sky and clouds

　太陽が沈んだのと同じ方向に、その後、月も沈みました。

　傾き云々は、やぼですね。何を基準にするかです。

　The moon set in about the same direction as the sun set.

　Isn't it unsophisticated to discuss the inclination? It depends on what the reference object is.

　楽しかった今日も、いよいよ終わりを迎えます。波の音が心地よく響きわたっています。

青と白 blue and white

　海を間近に見るのは久しぶりです。青と白のコントラストが印象的です。白い崖は火山から噴出した軽石が海底で堆積したものです。

　Long time no see the sea up close. The contrast between blue and white is impressive. The white cliffs are pumice stones ejected from volcanoes deposited on the seabed.

ノイバラ Japanese rose

　赤い実はノイバラの実です。実は、エイジツ(営実)と呼ばれる生薬であり、便秘薬や利尿薬として利用されるそうです。また、生薬とは漢方薬を構成する原料のことです。

　These red fruits are the fruit of "Japanese rose". The fruit is a crude drug called "eijitu" in Japanese, and it is said to be used as a laxative and diuretic. In addition, crude drug is a raw material of Chinese herbal medicines.

　今年は、真っ赤な紅葉を、見ることができないと思っていました。

　買い物帰りにいつもと違う道を通ったところ、幸運にも求めていた紅葉を、見ることができました。日照、温度、湿度などの条件が良かったのでしょう。

　When I took a different road on my way home from shopping, I had the good fortune to see the autumn leaves I was looking for. The conditions such as sunshine, temperature and humidity would have been good.

アライグマ raccoon

　食べ物を洗うしぐさがかわいいアライグマですが、日本には元々生息していない動物で、「特定外来生物」に指定されています。日本には、天敵がいないので、野生化した個体が増え、農作物や家畜の被害が増え、人へも病気を媒介するという理由で害獣として扱われています。

　レンジャーに捕獲した個体をどうするのか聞いたところ、即水没処理しますとのことでした。物としての扱いにショックを受けました。

Although the raccoon has a cute gesture of washing food, it is an animal that does not originally inhabit Japan and is designated as a "invasive alien species".

　There are no natural enemies in Japan, so the number of raccoon increases and they are treated as harmful animal because they damage crops and livestock and transmit diseases also to humans.

　When I asked a ranger what to do with the captured individual, he said that he would immediately submerge it. It was shocking to me how that was handled as a thing.

　朽ちた切り株の頂上には、小さな世界が存在するように思います。

アザミ thistle

　冠毛は萼(がく)が変化したもので、風に飛び種子を散布します。

　アザミにはトゲがあるので、近づきたくないです。スコットランドでは、そのトゲが外敵から国土を守るという理由で、国花となっています。

　A pappus is a change in calyx piece that flies in the wind and sprays seeds.

　Thistles have thorns so I don't want to get close. In Scotland, the thistle is a national flower because its thorns protect the territory from foreign enemies.

動物虐待 animal cruelty

　フランスでは、犬や猫の店舗での販売が禁止されることが法律で決まりました。店舗での販売は、衝動買いを招き、その結果として、ペットが捨てられることにつながるという理由です。飼いたい場合は、ブリーダーから直接購入するか、保護施設からの引き取りかに、限られることになります。同様に、イルカとシャチのショーは2026年から禁止されます。

　私はこの論理展開に疑問を感じました。愛犬家・愛猫家の方のご意見も聞いてみたいです。

　In France, it will be banned in 2024 to sale of dogs and cats in pet shops. The reason is that selling in shops leads to impulsive buying, which in turn leads to the pet abandonment. If you want to keep it, you will be limited to purchasing it directly from a breeder or picking it up from a shelter. A dolphin show and a orca show will also be banned in 2026.

　I have doubts about this logical expansion. I would like to hear the opinions of dog persons and cat persons.

三たびのサザンカ Sasanqua, 3rd time

　サザンカかツバキか見極めるのが難しい花です。葉の葉脈と鋸歯から多分サザンカだと思いますがいかがでしょう。

　It is difficult to distinguish whether this flower is Sasanqua or camellia. I think it's probably Sasanqua from the shape of the veins and edge of the leaves. How do you think about?

再びサザンカ sasanqua again

　サザンカとツバキの花はよく似ています。

　地面に花首が落ちていないこと、右下の葉の特徴から、この花はサザンカだと思います。

　Sasanqua and camellia flowers are very similar.

　I think this flower is Sasanqua because of the petals are scattered on the ground and from the characteristics of the leaves in the lower right of this photo. Camellia flowers do not scatter its petals.

　東京ではサザンカの見頃は、過ぎました。うっかりサザンカの花を見逃すところでした。

　The best time to see flowers of sasanqua in Tokyo has passed.  I almost foget to see them.

コナラ Quercus serrata

　風に舞った一枚のコナラの葉が、ヒサカキにひっかかりました。

　A leaf of Quercus serrata fluttering in the wind was caught by Eurya japonica.

メタセコイヤ dawn redwood

　閉鎖された区画に存在するメタセコイヤの並木です。手を高く差し上げて、フェンス越しに撮影しました。気が付けば、立ち入って撮影している人が一人いました。そんな人もいますが、閉鎖されていれば、人のいない風景が撮れます。

　It is a row of Metasequoia, dawn redwood, that exist in a closed area. I put up my hand and took a picture from over that fence. Meanwhile, I noticed that somebody broke in and was taking photos. Some people like that, but when the area closed, we can take photos of empty landscapes.

天を焦がす burn the heavens

　紅葉が天を焦がしているようです。

　The autumn leaves seem to burn the heavens.

赤味が少ない lack of redness

　今年の紅葉の美しさは、今ひとつです。

　紅葉は最低気温が8度以下になると始まり、5度をきる日が続くと、きれいに紅葉するそうです。

　The fall colors are not great this year.

　Leaves begin to change color when the minimum temperature drops below 8 degrees Celsius, and the temperature continues below 5 degrees Celsius, the leaves turn in great color.
