黄色とピンク

黄色はロウバイの花、ピンクはサザンカの花。サザンカの花は、どれも痛んでいたので、近くで撮影することはできませんでした。

The yellow is the flower of winter sweets and the pink is the flower of sasanquas. Each sasanqua flower had wilted petals, so I couldn't shoot close up photo.

ミツマタ Oriental paperbush

ミツマタとジンチョウゲの花は、似ていると思いませんか。同じファミリーの植物です。
ミツマタは常に三つに分岐して伸びて行きますが、そんな道に迷い込んだら戻ってくるのは難しいでしょうね。

Don't you think Oriental paperbush and Winter Daphne flowers are similar? Both are plants of the same family.
Oriental paperbush grows in three direction without exception. It will be difficult to come back if we get lost on such a path.

山吹の実 Japanese kerria fruit

黒くなった山吹の実です。赤い背景は、ブルーベリーの葉です。
一重咲きの山吹には実が成りますが、八重咲きは実が成りません。それは雄しべが花弁に変化しているからです。

These are Japanese kerria fruits which have become black. Red color background is blueberry leaves.
A single-flowered Yamabuki will bear fruit, but a double-flowered will not. That is because all stamens have turned into petals.

春一番 "haruichiban"

春一番とは、春になって初めて吹く、南よりの強い風を意味しますが、同じ名前の植物があるのですね。

"春一番; Haruichiban" means "first gale of spring", but I learned there is plant with the same name.

暖冬 unusually warm winter

今年はまれに見る暖冬のため、田んぼが凍りません。

The rice field is not frozen this year because of the abnormally warm winter.

アザミの白い種 white thistle seeds

ふわふわの空を飛ぶアザミの種です。

These are fluffy thistle seeds that fly in the air.

ユーモラスな冬芽 humorous winter bud

冬芽は植物によらず、どれも滑稽です。

Winter buds are humorous regardless of plants.

アジサイの今 hydrangea in winter

葉がすべて落ちドライフラワーのようになったアジサイです。
冬に咲く紫陽花があると聞きましたが、まだ見たことはありません。

I heard there is a hydrangea that blooms in winter, but I haven't seen it yet.

ひこばえ Basal shoot

倒れた梅の木の幹から、株立ちのように沢山の枝が空に向かって伸びています。枝の先には赤いつぼみが膨らんでいます。どのような意思が働き、このような命をつなぐ仕組みが機能するのでしょうか。

From the trunk of the fallen plum tree, the bunch of the branches have grown toward the sky.
Red buds have swelled at the tip of the branches.
What intent worked and what triggered this life-saving mechanism?

コウヤボウキ Pertya scandens

枯れた花が、枝に沢山残っていました。花についたゴミを払おうとしたら、花は萼からポロッと落ちました。花は、枝にしっかりついていると思ってましたが、そうではありません。風が吹いても、枝がすんすんなりとたわむので、花は落ちずに残っているのでしょう。

A lot of dead flowers have remained on each branch. When I tried to remove a garbage from a flower, the flower dropped off from its calyx. I realized that the flowers did not attach to each branch firmly. I think that even if the wind blows, the branches will bend smoothly, so the flowers will be able to remain.

昭和のかおり scent of Showa Era

昔の宿場場町の路地を歩き、昭和の初期のかおりを見つけました。こんな家で簡素な生活がしたくなりました。

I found a scent of early Showa Era at an alley of an old post town. I felt that I would like to live a simple life in such the house.

Showa is a title used to number years in the Japanese calendar system. It started in 1926 and ended in 1989.

相似形 similar figures

玉ねぎは、剥いてもむいても、相似形を保ちます。芯はありません。
玉ねぎから、ロシアの入れ子人形、"マトリョーシカ"を連想しますが、日本にも伝統の入れ子人形があります。ネットで“Fukuruma”と検索すると見ることができます。

Onions retain the similar figures, even if the shell would be repeated peeling. They have a no wick.

竹林だと思っていましたが、竹が広範囲に伐採されると、杉林が現われました。
粉砕された、笹の枝と葉の緑色の微細な小片が、あたり一面にあたかも日本茶のように積もっていました。

I thought it was a bamboo forest, but after the bamboos were cut down extensively, a cedar forest emarged.
Fine green pieces of pulverized bamboo branches and leaves were spread as if they were Japanese tea.

胡蝶蘭 phalaenopsis orchid

遠目で優美な胡蝶蘭ですが、近くから見ると花は複雑な構造をしており魔法の植物です。

Phalaenopsis looks elegant from a distance. It has very complicated flowers when viewed nearby and is a magic plant.

ビオラ viola

ビオラは、品種改良が進み、花の少ないこの寒い時期にも咲くので、あちこちの花壇でよく見かけます。

Violas are often found in flower beds here and there because they have been bred improvement and bloom even in this cold season when others do not bloom.

蝋梅 winter sweet

蝋梅が咲き始めました。遠くから見るだけで、良い香りを感じます。

Winter sweets have started to bloom. Just by looking at them from a distance, I feel a good scent.

残り葉 remaining leaves

枯れて散らずに残ったモミジの葉が、午後の陽にやさしく浮かび上がりました。

The leaves of Japanese maple that have not scattered gently float in the afternoon sun.

南天の杖 nandina cane

元日に、お寺で杖を配っていたので、1本いただきました。聞けば、材質は南天だそうです。
南天の幹は、真っ直ぐ伸びていますが、その肌はざらついており、強度もなさそうなので、南天で杖が作られるのかと疑問に思いました。考えて見れば、南天で作られた箸もあるので、材としては適当なのかも知れません。
南天は、縁起が良いので、この寺では、お正月に配るのでしょう。

さて、三が日も過ぎ、軽登山をするのに、この杖を持ち出しました。たまたま、向こうから来る人が同じ杖を持っていました。なんと、その人が杖をたくさん作り、お寺に寄進したそうです。
このような偶然には、なぜか心が和らぎます。

A temple was distributing canes to worshiper on the new year's day, so I received one. I heard that the material is a nandina.
The nandina trunk is straight, but its skin is rough and seems not strong enough, so I wondered if the canes were made from the nandina. Come to think of it, some chopsticks are made from the nandina, so it may be suitable as a material.
It is said that the nandina has good luck, so the temple distributed them.

Now, first three days of the New Year have passed, and I took this cane for hiking. As it happened, a person coming from the other side had the same type of cane. He said that he made a lot of the canes and donated temple them.
For such a coincidence, my heart softens for some reason.
