南天は縁起がよい nandina is auspicious

　今年のお正月に、あるお寺がナンテンで作った杖を、参拝客に配っていました。ナンテンの木はたわみやすいので、杖には向かないと思います。縁起物として、敢えて選んだのかも知れません。

　On new year 2020, a temple handed out canes made of nandina to worshipers. Nandina trees bend easily, so I don't think they are suitable for canes. The priest might have chosen on purpose nandina as a lucky charm.

小楢(コナラ) quercus serrata

　斜面に育つ幼樹の葉にカメラを構えたとき、危うく足を滑らせるところでした。

　地面には、細長いどんぐりが大量に落ちていたので、この木はどんぐりから発芽したコナラだと思います。

　When I looked at the leaves of the young tree growing on the slope and pointed the camera at it, I almost slipped. 

　There were a lot of slender acorns on the ground, so I think this is a quercus serrata sprouted from an acorn.

 

ツツジの新芽 azalea sprout

　新旧交代です。

　It's a change from the old to the new.

万両(マンリョウ) coral bush

　咲く花の少ないこの時期に、赤い実をつける植物は目立ちます。マンリョウとセンリョウはよく似た植物ですが、葉の下に実をつけるのがマンリョウ、上につけるのがセンリョウです。

　At this time of year when there are few plants flowering flowers, plants with red berries stand out. "Coral bush" and "sarcandra glabra" are very similar plants, but "coral bush" bears fruit under the leaves and  "sarcandra glabra" bears above them.

 

乾燥の季節 dry season

　モミジの葉も乾燥してパリパリです。

　Maple leaves also appear dry and crispy.

クロガネモチ ilex rotunda

　赤い実を沢山つけた様は圧巻です。

　This scenery of a lot of red fruits is stunning. 

　常緑広葉樹も葉を落としますが、新旧の葉が入れ替わるので、丸坊主になることはないはずです。何かストレスでも加わったのでしょうか。

　Evergreen trees also shed their leaves, but the old and new leaves are replaced, so there is no way for them to become bare. I suppose something has stressed this tree.

ゴンズイ euscaphis japonica

　実が熟すと割れて、中から黒い種が現れます。ちょっと不気味な感じがするゴンズイです。

　When the fruit ripens, it cracks and black seeds appear from inside. It is a  euscaphis japonica that makes me feel a little weird.

マルバウツギ fuzzy pride-of-Rochester

 　木の名前は知りませんが、その紅葉が里山の森の斜面で陽の光を浴びて輝いていました。光が当たって無ければ、気づきもせず通り過ぎたと思います。

　名前がわからないと、モヤモヤした気分になるのですが、ネットで、この木はマルバウツギだと教えていただきました。

　I don't know the name of the tree, but its autumn leaves were shining in sunlight on the slopes of woodland near a village. If the leaves had not been bathed in sunlight, I would unaware of the tree.

　If I can't identify the name, I feel uneasy. But I was told this tree is "fuzzy pride-of-Rochester" on the net.

ヤブミョウガ pollia japonica

　熟した実は青い真珠のようです。

　The ripe fruits appear blue pearls.

真弓(マユミ) Japanese spindle tree

　ピンクの果実から、朱色種が、顔を出す頃に来たかったのですが、今は種だけになってしまいました。

　I wanted to come by the time the vermilion seeds came out of the cracks of the pale pink fruit, but now it's just the seeds.

シャコバサボテン Christmas Cactus

 　このサボテンは、葉が甲殻類の手に見えるので、シャコに見立て、"シャコ・バ(葉)・サボテン"と呼ばれます。クリスマスの時期に開花するサボテンなので、英名では、クリスマス・カクタスと呼ばれます。

　In English, this cactus is called "Christmas cactus" because it blooms around Christmas time. The appearance of the leave looks like a crustacean so it is called "syako-ba saboten" in Japanese. "Syako-ba" means that the leave resembles crustacean, and "saboten" means cactus.

枇杷(ビワ)の花 loquat flower

 　農家は、大きな枇杷の実が育つように、"花もぎ"といって事前につぼみを間引きます。この見捨てられた木は、花もぎされていないので、密に花が咲いています。

　Farmers thin out buds of loquat trees in advance so that the fruits become large. This abandoned tree is densely flowering because it has not been removed of unnecessary buds.

粘り強く stick on a branch

 　まだ少し、紅葉がしんぼう強く枝に残っています。

　落葉樹は冬になると、樹木から水分が逃げ出さないよう、葉を落とします。このとき、葉にたまっている老廃物も、体外に捨てられることになるそうです。

　植物にも排泄の機能が備わっているのですね。

　常緑樹の葉にも寿命があり、それは2年位だそうです。

　In winter, deciduous trees shed their leaves to prevent water from escaping from the tree. At this time, the waste products accumulated in the leaves will also be thrown out of the body.

　It's interesting that plants have an excretion function as well.

　On the other hand, the leaves of evergreens also have a lifespan, which is about two years.

ジャイアントパンダの返還 return of giant panda

 　上野動物園のジャイアントパンダのシャンシャンは、今月末までに中国に返還される予定でしたが、来年5月末まで延期されることになりました。理由は、専門スタッフが中国まで同行することが、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大の影響で難しいと判断されたからです。

　一方、カナダのカルガリー動物園では、3年の期限を残して、アルシュンとダーマオの2頭を中国の重慶動物園に返還しました。新型コロナウイルスの世界的な大流行により、新鮮な竹を輸入するのが難しくなったからです。

　大人のジャイアントパンダは、毎日およそ４０キログラムの竹を食べるそうです。

　お国事情で対応は様々ですね。

　A giant panda ”Xiang Xiang” at the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, was scheduled to be returned to China by the end of this month, but has been postponed until the end of May next year. The reason is that it was considered difficult for professional staff to accompany her to China because of the spread of the novel coronavirus infection.

　Meanwhile, at the Calgary Zoo in Canada, two giant pandas, "Er Shun" and "Da Mao", have been returned to Chongqing Zoo in China, leaving a three-year deadline. With the coronavirus pandemic made it difficult to import fresh bamboo. 

　Each adult giant panda requires about 40 kilograms of bamboo a day.

見納め last chance to see

　幸運にも、またモミジの紅葉を見ることができました。これで今年も見納めだと思います。

　Fortunately, I was able to enjoy the autumn leaves of the Japanese maple again. I think this is the last chance in this season.

花衝羽根空木(ハナツクバネウツギ) glossy abelia

　小さな白い花と、淡いサーモンピンク色の葉の取り合わせがきれいです。

　日本語では、「小さな白い花」、「白い小さな花」のどちらの表現も使うことができますが、英語では形容詞の並び順が決まっており、「小さな白い花」としか言えません。英語は、語順に厳格な言語だとつくづく思います。

　The combination of small white flowers and pale salmon pink leaves is beautiful.

　In Japanese, you can say "small white flower" or "white small flower", but in English, the order of adjectives is fixed and you can only say "small white flower". I really think English is a strict language in word order.

歩道にて on the sidewalk

　犬の置物が、通りに面した玄関に置かれていました。

　我が家の犬は、どの犬ともあまりうまく馴染めませんでした。生まれた直後に暗箱に入れられ、我が家へ来たので、自分は人間だと思ってしまったのかも知れません。

　A dog figurine was placed at the entrance facing the street.

　My dog didn't fit well with any of the dogs. He was put in a dark box shortly after his birth. He came to my home without any experience in dog society, so he may have thought he was a human being.

赤い実と緑の葉のコントラストがいいですね。日本と台湾に分布しています。

The contrast between the red fruits and green leaves is nice. This plant grows in Japan and Taiwan.

 

養殖魚用飼料 feed for farmed fish

魚のアラを養殖魚用飼料に活用

　従来は捨てられていた、魚の骨やアラを固形飼料（魚粉）にして、養殖魚の飼料にすることが進んでいるそうです。

　このニュースを聞いて想い出したのが、20年ほど前に話題になった狂牛病です。ウシから人間が食べる部分を取り除いて、あまった肉や骨などを細かく砕いたものを肉骨粉として、それを飼料としてウシに食べさせたため、この病気は引き起こされました。

　自分と同じ生物を食べることは、必要な栄養素を効率よく取り込めることは、容易に想像できますが、デメリットもあります。自分と同じかあるいは近い種目を食べるということは、それだけ、かかりやすい病気の元が濃縮されて取り込まれる可能性があるということです。

　上記は私見です。杞憂だと良いのですが…

Utilizing Fish Dregs As Feed For Farmed Fish

　It seems that fish dregs, which were previously discarded, are being used as solid feed to farmed fish. 

　When I heard this news, I remembered the mad cow disease that became a hot topic about 20 years ago. The disease was caused by feeding cattle with meat-and-bone meal. This meat-and-bone meal is a feed made from the part of the cattle that is not eaten by humans.

　It's easy to imagine that eating the same species is an efficient way to get the nutrients you need. However, there is also decisive disadvantages. Eating the same species means that the source of the illness may be condensed and taken it into your body.

　That's my point of view. I hope it is a needless fear.

養殖ブリ farmed yellowtail

ホトケノザ henbit deadnettle

 　春に咲くホトケノザが咲いていました。ホトケノザは越年草なので、気温が暖かい日が続いていたので、この時期にも関わらず咲いたのでしょう。

　Henbit deadnettle blooming in spring has been in bloom. It is a grass that goes through the winter, so it may have bloomed at this time because the warm days continued.

蜜柑(ミカン) mandarin orange

 　この時期、好んでミカンを食べますが、木になっているのを見るのは初めてです。この木はよく実がなっています。

　I enjoy eating mandarin oranges this time of year, but this is the first time I've seen an orange tree produces fruit. This tree bears well.

コウヨウザンの実 fruit of Chinese fir

　コウヨウザンの実が落ちて、モミジの葉に引っかかっていました。

　The fruits of Chinese fir fell and were caught on the Japanese maple leaf.

生命力 vitality

 根本から伐採されたイチョウの木に、蘖（ひこばえ）が、左右に別れ勢いよく育っています。すごい生命力です。（骨シンチグラフィー検査の日に）

The basal shoots are growing vigorously on the left and right sides of the ginkgo tree that has been cut down from the root. I feel great vitality in them. (On the day of my bone scintigraphy examination)

イロハモミジのおちば fallen leaves of Japanese maple

 この崖ぎわの植物は寒菅(カンスゲ)でしょうか。その上に、イロハモミジの葉が積もっていました。

I suppose this cliff-side plant is a carex morrowii. There were Japanese maple leaves fallen on it.

色とりどり colorful autumn leaves

　落葉広葉樹の葉が、紅色や黄色に色づくことを、どちらも紅葉(こうよう)すると、表現していましたが、正確には、紅色に色づくことは紅葉、黄色は黄葉と漢字で表記し、読みはどちらも"こうよう"でいいそうです。

　Green is the color of chlorophyll, yellow is the carotenoid, and crimson is the anthocyanin.
