竹くず bamboo scraps

　年末は、大掃除で大忙しです。竹の廃材が、空の植木鉢に投げ込まれました。偶然に現れたその模様が面白かったので、ポップ調の画像で残しておきました。

　Cleaning becomes a hectic task at the end of the year. Bamboo scraps were thrown into an empty flower pot. The pattern appeared by chance was interesting, so I kept it as a pop-style image.

松葉ガニ crab called 'matsuba gani'

　カニは、なんと怖い顔をしてるのでしょう。そのままで、恐怖映画の主人公になれそうです。そんなカニを、日本人はは躊躇することなく食べています。海外の事情はどうなんでしょう。

　モーゼ五書のレビ記には、水中で生活する動物のうち、鱗とヒレがあるもの以外は、食べてはいけないと記されているそうです。

　The crab's face is quite terrifying! They could be the main character in a horror movie as it is. Japanese people eat these crabs without hesitation. I wonder what the situation is in other parts of the world.

　The Leviticus section of Moses' Pentateuch prohibits eating of aquatic animals without scales and fins.

タラノキの果実 Fruits of Aralia elata

　我が家のタラノキが、大きくなり過ぎたので、大胆に剪定をしました。それに危機感を覚えたのか、その木は根を張りめぐらし、庭のあちこちで地中から芽を出してきました。庭中がタラノキになってはたまらないと、すべての芽の地上部を切りました。そのせいなのかは分かりませんが、今は実をたわわにつけ、種を蒔き散らそうとしているかのような状態です。

　毎年実がなる訳ではないので、タラノキが命を繋ごうとしているのかも知れません。でも単に、夏が暑かったからかも知れません。

　一つの果実を潰してみると、中から直径1mmほどの５つの小さな命が出てきました。

　The Aralia elata plant at my house have gotten too big, so I pruned it boldly. Perhaps sensing a sense of crisis, the tree spreads its roots through the garden and sprouted from ground here and there. I couldn't bear to see the entire garden turning into Aralia elata plants, so I cut off the aboveground parts of all the buds. I don't know if it's because of this, but right now it's producing a lot of fruit and looks like it's about to spread seeds.

　It doesn't bear fruit every year, so perhaps the Aralia elata plant is trying to survive. But maybe it was just because it was a hot summer.

　Five tiny creatures(aha) of about 1 mm in diameter emerged from the inside of a fruit when I crushed it.

　This is a cross section of the root part of a qing-geng-cai, one of the representative vegetables of Chinese cuisine.

皇帝ダリア Dahlia imperialis

　和名は木立ダリア（コダチダリア）ですが、学名の皇帝ダリアと呼ばれるのが一般的です。英名はTree dahliaなので、和名と同じ感性で命名されています。

　The Japanese name for this tree is Kodachi-dahlia, but it is commonly called Emperor Dahlia by its scientific name. The Japanese word 'Kodachi' refers to a group of trees that grow together. The English name is Tree dahlia, so it was named with the same feeling as the Japanese name.

ひまわり sunflower

　ひまわりは、夏に咲く印象が強いですが、秋に咲くヒマワリもあります。

　ヒマワリは、根が力強く地中深く伸びるので、畑の硬盤をくずします。その後に、鋤き込めば、繊維質を含み、フカフカな土になります。

　　硬盤とは畑の下に存在する硬い層です。田んぼでは、水を溜める必要があるので、粘土の層を地下に作りました。 稲作をやめて畑に転用する場合は、この硬い層が厄介者になります。

　Although sunflowers usually bloom in the summer, there are some that bloom in the fall as well.

　Sunflowers have powerful roots that grow deep into the ground, breaking down Hardpan in the field. When plowed the field, it becomes soft and also contains fibers.

　Hardpan is the hard layer that exists under the field. In the rice fields, we needed to store water, so we built a hard layer of clay underground. If you decide to stop growing rice and turn it into fields, this Hardpan will become a nuisance.

コセンダングサ cobbler's pegs

　棘のある種が服にひっつくので、通称ひっつき虫と呼ばれるコセンダングサです。外来生物法で要注意外来生物に指定された厄介者です。花も蕾もあるので、まだまだひっつき虫が増える様相です。

　Cobbler's pegs are called sticky bugs in Japan because their thorny seeds stick to clothing. It is a nuisance designated as an alien species requiring attention under the Alien Species Act. There are still flowers and buds, so it looks like there will be more sticky bugs increasing. The presence of flowers and buds suggests an increase in sticky bugs.

ナデシコ dianthus

　尖った花びらですが、受けるイメージはやさしく可憐です。

　Although the petals are sharp, the image you receive is gentle and cute.

冬桜(フユザクラ) fuyuzakura

　フユザクラという名は、冬に咲く桜の総称です。ちらほらと咲いており、つぼみの状況からも、ソメイヨシノのように満開を楽しむことは無理のようです。なるべく、赤みの強い花を選びました。

　Cherry blossoms that bloom in winter are generally referred to as Fuyuzakura. The blooming is sporadic, and with the buds in poor condition, it appears impossible to experience the full bloom like Someiyoshino. I tried to choose flowers with a strong reddish hue.

ドレスデン Dresden

　中心は薄いピンク色で美しいのですが、外側の花弁には薄緑色がさして、縮れるのがいつも気になるバラです。この花は、それがほとんど感じられませんでした。

　This rose has a beautiful pale pink petals in the center, but the outer petals partially have a pale green color and crepe-like curls that always bother me.

ジャン ドルメソン Jan d'Ormesson

　このバラは、温度により花の色が変わるらしいです。温度が低いとオレンジ色に、高いと黄色が強くでます。今年は気温が高い日が続いたので、黄みが強いかも。

　The color of this rose seems to change based on the temperature. The orange appears more strong when the temperature is low, and the yellow appears more strong when the temperature is high. It is probable that it will have more yellow due to the high temperatures this year.

アンジェラ angela

 　アンジェラは、つるバラで香りは今ひとつですが、花をいっぱいつけるので、見る人を魅了します。咲き始めなので、周囲に蕾を沢山見て取れます。

　Angela is a climbing rose that doesn't have much of a scent, but it has a lot of flowers and attracts people who see it. It is just beginning to bloom, so you can see many buds around.

金襴紫蘇(キンランジソ) coleus

　和名のキンランジソは、園芸の分野でコリウスと呼ばれています。

　コリウスの葉が午後の陽を浴びて、きらびやかに輝いていました。

　If you literally interpret the Japanese name written in kanji, it means Shiso that looks like a textile patterns woven from gold thread.

　The leaves of the coleus were shining brightly in the afternoon sun.

道端探検20231028 roadside exploration

　道端にカエルを模した愛嬌あるオブジェが置かれていました。下部にレバーらしきものがあるので、それを踏むと口が大きく開き、同時に両手もバンザイするように作られているようです。多分、ゴミ箱として作られたのでしょう。

　On the roadside, there was a charming object in the form of a frog. There is something like a lever at the bottom. If you step on it, the mouth  will wide open and both hands seem to rise up at the same time. It's probable that it was built as a trash can.

箒草(ホウキグサ) summer cypress

 　のどかな畑の一角で、ホウキグサの色が長い期間をかけて、緑から赤そして茶色へと変化していくのを、毎年楽しんでいます。

　In a peaceful corner of the field, I enjoy watching the color of the summer cypress change from green to red then brown over a long period of time, every year.

春黄金花(サンシュユ) Shan zhu yu

 　日本名は春黄金花(ハルコガネバナ)ですが、中国名の山茱萸(サンシュユ)の方が通りがよいです。

　この赤い実は、渋みが強いのでそのままでは食べられません。焼酎に漬けると、滋養強壮や疲労回復などに効く果実酒ができるそうです。

　Its Japanese name is "Harukoganebana", which means golden flowers in spring, but it is better known by its Chinese name "Shan zhu yu".

　It is not possible to eat this red fruit as it has a strong astringent taste. If you soak the fruits in distilled spirits, you can make a fruit wine that is effective for nutritional fortification and recovery from physical exhaustion.

秋桜(コスモス) cosmos

　コスモスは秋の桜と書きますが、花は桜というより菊ににています。秋菊と名付けた方が良いように思いますが、秋菊（シュウキク）は、菊の別称、つまり菊そのものなので、使えませんね。

　Cosmos is written as autumn cherry blossoms, in Japanese, but the flower looks more like chrysanthemums than cherry blossoms. In my view, it would be more appropriate to call it autumn chrysanthemum, but since autumn chrysanthemum is another name for chrysanthemum, in other words, chrysanthemum itself, so you cannot utilize it.

唐傘茸(カラカサタケ) parasol mushroom

 　キノコが美味しい時期になりました。このキノコは傘の直径が20cmくらいと大きく、軸が隠れて見えません。多分、カラカサタケだと思います。

　キノコは2万を超える種類があり、名前が付けられているのは3分の1以下だそうです。毒を持つものも多く、私のような素人が、採取して食べることは絶対に避けるよう教えられています。

　Now is a great time to eat mushrooms with deliciousness. These mushrooms have a large cap, about 20 cm in diameter, and the shafts are hidden from view. They are likely parasol mushrooms.

　There are over 20,000 mushroom kinds, but only about one-third of them have names. Many of them are poisonous, and amateurs like me are taught not to collect and eat them.

小海老草(コエビソウ) beloperone

 　赤い苞の重なりがエビの姿に似ているので、コエビソウと呼ばれます。先端からは、白い花が出ています。英名はベロペロネですが、なんか舐められそうな名前です。

　随分昔のこと、森の中にエビフライに似た不思議なものが落ちていました。その正体は、リスが松ぼっくりの中にある種を食べた食べ残しでした。その写真が見つからないので、ネットで見つけた写真を代わりに貼っておきます。

　It is called ko-ebisou in Japanese because its red bracts resemble shrimp. Ko-ebisou means grass resembling small shrimp in Japanese. White flowers emerge from the tips. Its English name is beloperone. The sound of the name Beroperone has the image of being licked in Japanese.

　I found a mysterious item that resembled fried shrimp falling in the forest a long time ago. It was leftover food after a squirrel ate the seeds inside a pine cone. I couldn't find the photo, so I posted one founded online instead.

 空木(ウツギ) fuzzy deutzia

　道路沿いの植え込みにウツギが咲いていました。花が咲く期間が長く、刈り込み耐性が強く、しかも排気ガスに強いので選ばれたようです。

　ウツギと名の付く木は沢山あります。ある本では、18種類の”なんとかウツギ”が紹介されています。しかも、ユキノシタ科やバラ科などと違う種類にまたがって存在します。

　日本では、茎の中が空洞の木のことをウツギと呼ぶので、このような混乱状態になるのでしょう。

　Fuzzy deutzia are blooming in the shrubbery along the road. It appears that it was chosen due to its long blooming time, resistance to pruning, and resistance to exhaust gases.

　Many trees in Japan have the name utsugi, or fuzzy deutzia in English.One book introduces 18 types of trees with the name that include utugi. Furthermore, it is present in various species, such as the Saxifrage and Rosaceae families.

　In Japan, trees with hollow stems are called utsugi, which is confusing.

 タラノキ(楤木)の花 flowers of Aralia elata

　我が家のタラノキに、小さな淡黄緑色の花が群がるように咲きました。特に香りがするわけでもないのに、小さな昆虫が周りを飛び回っています。その中に、一匹のスズメバチが様子を窺うように飛んでいます。

　Small, pale yellow-green flowers have bloomed in a crowd on the Aralia elata tree at my house. Although there is no particular smell, many small insects are flying around. As if observing the situation, a hornet is flying around among them.

向日葵(ヒマワリ) sunflower

 　ヒマワリというと、7月か8月に咲くイメージを持っていますが、ここでは、毎年9月末から10月初めに咲きます。

　Sunflowers are usually thought of as blooming in July or August, but here they bloom from the end of September to early October every year.

ヤマトシジミ pale grass blue

 　シジミチョウが百日草にとまっています。

　昔はよくこの蝶を家の周りで見ましたが、最近は見かけることが少なくなりました。

　A butterfly is perched on zinnia. 

　I used to frequently see this kind of butterflies, but these days I am seeing fewer and fewer.

鶏頭(ケイトウ) plumed cockscomb

　ケイトウと言えば、ニワトリのトサカに似た扇状に広がる花を思い浮かべますが、近頃は花穂が沢山ついた円錐形の花を見るようになりました。

When it comes to cockscomb (plant), I imagine a fan-shaped flower resembling a chicken comb,  but recently I have come to see cone-shaped flowers with many spikes.

ルドベキア プレーリー サン Rudbeckia Prairie Sun

　ヒマワリに似ていますが、これはルドベキア プレーリー サンです。

花弁の基部が橙色で先端が黄色であり、中心の盛り上がった花芯が薄黄緑色です。この色の組み合わせはよい取り合わせです。

　Although it looks like a sunflower, this is actually Rudbeckia Prairie Sun.

　The base portion of the petals is orange and the tip section is yellow, and the raised center of a flower is pale yellow-green. This color combination is a good match.

瑠璃玉薊(ルリタマアザミ) globethistle

　随分、トゲトゲした花だと思います。

　I think it is a very spiky flower.

桔梗(キキョウ) balloon flower

　花の中を覗くと、そこには天狗がいました。

　When I looked into the flower, there was a long-nosed goblin.

紫馬簾菊(ムラサキバレンギク) Echinacea

　花が終わりに近づくと舌状花が垂れ下がり、火消しの纏(まとい)のような形になります。火消しの纏とは、江戸時代の火消しが所属する組を示す標識のことです。昔の消火活動は、類焼を防ぐための破壊作業でした。纏持ちは、勇敢にもその火事場の最前線に立ち纏を高く掲げて、火消し達の士気を高める大切な役割を果たす花形でした。

　話は変わりますが、こんな形の金魚がいてもいいですね。

　As the flower nears its end, the ray florets droop and form into a "火消しの纏 (Hikeshi no matoi)" in Japanese. "Hikeshi no matoi" is a firefighter's standard, a kind of flag. It is a indicator of the group the firefighter belonging, in the Edo period. In the past, fire extinguishing activities were destructive work to prevent fires from spreading. The man with "Hikeshi no matoi" bravely stood at the forefront of the fire scene and held it up high, playing an important role in raising the morale of the firefighters.

　That aside, it would be nice to have a goldfish that looks like this.

珍車(チングルマ) Aleutian avens

　コケモモと同様に、チングルマも草に見えますが、意外にも木です。高山帯の厳しい環境では、植物は背を伸ばすのが困難なようで、横に広がり太陽光を受けるのでしょう。背が低い植物は、どうも草に見えてしまいます。

　Like a cowberry, Aleutian avens looks like grass, but it is actually a tree. In the harsh environment of the alpine zone, it seems difficult for the plants to grow taller, so they spread sideways and receive sunlight. Shorter plants tend to be considered grasses.

這松(ハイマツ) Siberian dwarf pine

　強風にさらされる枝が、名前の通り地を這うように伸びています。遠くに見るその姿に厳しさを感じますが、近くに寄って新葉(わかば)を見ると、また別の穏やかな表情を見せてくれます。

　Branches exposed to strong winds stretch to crawl on the ground. When you see it from a distance, you can feel its severe appearance, however, when you get closer and look at the young leaves, you can see another peaceful expression.

苔桃(コケモモ) cowberry

　あちらこちらの岩陰に、自生して群落を作っていました。コケモモは草に見えますが実は木です。

　木と草の違いは、大きい小さいに関係なく、地上部が何年も生き延びるのが木です。

　Cowberries were growing wild and forming colonies behind rocks here and there. It looks like grass, but it is actually a tree.

　The difference between trees and grasses is that, regardless of the size of the plant, the trees have the above-ground part lives for many years. 

落し文 (オトシブミ) dropped love letter

　この昆虫は、オトシブミ科のヒゲナガオトシブミだと思います。ヒゲナガオトシブミは、葉に切れこみを入れ、折りたたみそこへ卵を産んで、地面に落とします。この葉の包を落とし文となぞらえて、昆虫にこの名前が付けられました。

　昔の人は、思いを寄せる人が通りそうな場所に、恋文をそっと置いておくことがあったそうです。その恋文を落し文といいます。なんとも奥ゆかしい名前が付けられた昆虫ですね。

　ところで、この昆虫を見つけた場所は、富士山の側火山の宝永山山頂2693ｍです。森林限界を超えたこんな場所で、生息できるのか不思議に思いました。

　I think that this insect is 'Paratrachelophorus longicornis' in 'Attelabidae' family. The Japanese name is "Otoshi-bumi, which means love letter dropped in the road."

　The insect makes incisions in a leaf, folds it up, lays a egg there, and drops it to the ground. It is named after the folded leaf containing the egg, which is likened to a love letter.

　It is said that in the past, people would sometimes place a love letter in a place where someone they had feelings for might pass by. What a modest named insect!

　By the way, the place where I found this insect is 2693m on the summit of Mt. Hoei, a side volcano of Mt. Fuji. I wonder if they could live there beyond the forest line.

ヒッチハイカー hitchhiker

　でかけた先で気がつくと、車のドアノブの裏に、ニホンアマガエルが隠れていました。おやおや、こんなところに張り付いて、何処へ行こうとしているのですか。

　草むらへ逃してやろうと誘導するのですが、なかなかこの場を離れません。挙句の果て、車の下に隠れてしまったので、二人がかりで救出しました。

　When I went out, I found a Japanese tree frog hiding behind the doorknob of my car. Well well well, where are you trying to go, stuck in such a place?

　I tried to guide it to escape into the grass, but it won't leave the car. At the end, it moved under the car and hid, so it took two people to rescue it.

褄黒豹紋(ツマグロヒョウモン) Indian Fritillary

　そんな廃材に止まっても蜜は吸えませんよ。ただ、休んでいるだけかもしれませんね。

　Even if you perch on a such piece of scrap lumber, you can't suck nectar. But you may be just resting for a while.

南天 (ナンテン) nandina

　ナンテンには、せきを鎮める作用があることが、よく知られています。子供の頃冬になると、ナンテンのエキスが入った飴を、母によく買ってもらった記憶があります。

　Nandina is is well known for having an anti-cough effect. I remember when I was a child, in the winter, my mother used to buy me sweets with the plant extract.

白熊の木(ハグマノキ、スモークツリー） smoke tree

　スモークツリーは、和名のように白熊のようにも見えます。

　The smoke tree also looks like a polar bear. Its Japanese name "白熊の木,Shirokuma-no-ki" means polar bear tree.

ハンゲショウ Chinese lizard's tail

　花の近くの葉が白くなるのは、受粉を担う虫を呼ぶためだといわれています。花の開花時に、葉緑素が生成されないようにして、その目的を達成するそうです。どうしてそんなことができるのでしょう。神秘的ですね。

　They say that the reason the leaves turn white around the flowers is to attract pollinating insects. It is said that it seems to achieve its purpose by preventing the production of chlorophyll during flowering. How could they do such a thing? It is mysterious.

房藤空木（フサフジウツギ）butterfly bush

　甘い香りに惹かれ、蝶がフサフジウツギに集まるといわれますが、今日は蜂が集まっていました。英名からも、蝶がこの花を好むことがうかがわれます。

　この植物はフサフジウツギという、よい和名を持っているのですが、ブットレアと学名で呼ばれることが普通のようです。

　It is said that butterflies are attracted to Butterfly bush by its sweet fragrance, but today bees were gathering. The English name suggests that butterflies like the flowers.

　It has a Japanese name which makes a good impression, but it seems common to call it the scientific name Buddleja.
