息をするのを忘れる forget the breathe

　 小さな被写体をクローズアップで撮影する際、マニュアル操作のピント合わせに夢中になり、息をするのを忘れて慌てることがあります。

　バイオリニストの高松あいさんも、パガニーニの超絶技巧の演奏中に、超難関部分を抜けてホッとした時、息をするのを忘れることがあるとおっしゃっていました。

　息を飲むという表現は、聞くことがありますが、息を忘れるはほとんど聞きませんね。

　Violinist Ai Takamatsu also said that she sometimes forgets to breathe when she feels relieved after passing the super-tough part while performing Paganini's transcendent technique.

　We sometimes hear the expression "catch one's breath", but we almost never hear "forget to breathe".

　この家にはサボテン好きの人が住んでいるのでしょう。

古い窓ガラス old window glass

　霜が結晶したような模様の古い板ガラスです。左上のマス目のガラスは多分割れてしまったようです。もう同じものの入手は無理なんでしょう。

　It is an old plate glass with a pattern like crystallized frost. The glass in the upper left square seems to have been broken. The owner no longer appears to be able to obtain the same.

竜舌蘭(リュウゼツラン) century plant

　あちらこちらでリュウゼツランが咲いているとニュースで報じられました。もしかしたらと、近場のリュウゼツランを見に行きましたが、咲いていませんでした。

　リュウゼツランは、何十年もかけて成長したのち、1度だけ花を咲かせ、そして枯れてしまうそうです。

　The news has said that century plants are blooming here and there. I went to see the century plant in my neighborhood  with expectation, but it was not blooming.

 Century plants take decades of growth before blooming and die after the first blooming.

　花柱がどんどん伸びて、その先に花が咲くそうです。

　I heard that the flower stalks are getting longer and longer, and the flowers are blooming ahead of them.

　リラックスをしようと、音楽を聴いたことは今までなかったのですが、どういう訳か、リラックスできる音楽を探すことになりました。リラックスできることをうたった音楽をいろいろ聞きましたが、どれも目的に叶うものはありませんでした。最終的に、今日の気分では、エンヤの音楽がよいと結論付けました。

　彼女の音楽は、多重録音にエコーをかけていることに特徴があります。その音楽は、独特な荘厳な響きとなって心地のよいものです。そのように作られた曲ですからライブは無理で、録音された音楽でしか聞くことのできないものです。

　ユーチューブでエンヤの音楽を聴くことができます。

　I had never listened to music to relax, but for some unexplainable reason, I began to look for relaxing music. I've listened to a lot of music that promises to help me relax, but none of them have served my purpose. At the end, I found Enya's music to be good for my current mood.

　Her music is characterized by the use of overdubbing and echo techniques. The music has a unique solemn sound and is comfortable.  These are music that are made this way, so they are impossible to play live, they can only be listened with recorded music.

蚊刺安心器 Mosquito Bite Relief Device

　この記事は、2015年8月24日月曜日、他に投稿した記事をまとめたものです。

　このZAP-IT!と呼ばれる小さな器具は、蚊に刺された時の痒みや炎症を、防ぐために利用されます。患部に押し付けた電極間に微弱電流が流れ、そのジュール熱が毒素を分解します。

　蚊に刺された直後に、熱いシャワーを浴びると、痒みが収まることを、私は経験から知りました。蚊の毒はタンパク質です。タンパク質は、42度以上になると破壊されます。つまり、患部の温度を高くしてやれば、毒素を無効化することができるという訳です。

　私は、蚊に刺されたとき、ヘアドライヤーが利用できれば、患部を1分間くらい、熱いと感じながら温めます。これは効果抜群で、痒みもすぐに止まるし、その後の発疹も生じません。熱いシャワーを浴びるより簡便です。

　ガン細胞もタンパク質ですから、温熱による治療が有効だと考えられますが、まだ標準的治療になってないようです。保険適応は、3ヶ月までという制限があります。

　I use this small device called "ZAP-IT!" to suppress itching and irritation from mosquito bites. 

　A weak electric current flows between the electrodes pressed against the affected area, and the Joule heat will neutralize the venom.

　I have learned from experience that taking a hot shower immediately after a mosquito bite relieves the itch. Mosquito venom is a protein. Protein destruction occurs at temperatures above 42°C. In other words, if you raise the temperature of the affected area, you can neutralize the venom.

　When I am bitten by a mosquito, if I have access to a hair dryer, I heat the affected area for about a minute, feeling hot. It works fine, itching stops immediately and there is no subsequent skin rash. This is much easier than having a hot shower.

　Since cancer cells are also proteins, the treatment of hyperthermia is deemed effective, but it does not appear to be a standard treatment yet. The insurance coverage period for this treatment is limited to three months under the Japanese system.

　ミョウガの草をかき分けたら、薄暗いところに妖しく花が咲いていました。

　When I pushed aside the grasses of Japanese Ginger, the flowers were blooming mysteriously in the dark.

　今年もまた、夜になるとヤモリとが現れ、窓の明かりによってくる虫を待ち構えます。

　Every summer, Japanese geckos appear at night and wait for bugs that come to the light  windows.

アメリカオニアザミ spear thistle

　アメリカオニアザミの繊細な冠毛が、炎天下に輝いていました。暑さを一時忘れることができました。

　The delicate hairs of spear thistle glistened under the scorching sun. I could forget the heat for a while.

卵茸(タマゴタケ) Amanita caesareoides

　根本に卵の殻のようなツボが残っているので、これはタマゴタケのようです。タマゴタケは、美味しいといわれる食用キノコですが、キノコの判別は素人には難しいので、食べないほうがよさそうです。

　It looks like a Amanita caesareoides because it has eggshell-like pots at the base. It is an edible mushroom that is said to be delicious, but it is difficult for amateurs to distinguish whether it is edible or not, so it seems better not to eat it.

カリブラコア Calibrachoa

　撮影するときには、花はもっと密に咲いていた印象でした。全体の一部として見るか、切り取って見るかで印象が変わるのかも知れません。

　Before taking this photo, I felt the flowers were more dense. The impression may change according to whether I see it as a part of the whole or cut it out.

薮茗荷(ヤブミョウガ) Pollia japonica

　ヤブミョウガが小川のほとりに生えていました。湿った場所が好きなようです。我が家にはミョウガが生えていますが、両者で花は全く異なります。葉はよく似ていますが、ミョウガのほうが長いようです。ヤブミョウガは、ツユクサに分類され、ミョウガはショウガ科です。

　A bush ginger has been growing on the bank of a stream. They seem to like damp places. Japanese ginger grows in my garden, but the both flowers are completely different. The leaves are similar to each other, but Japanese ginger's leaves a little longer. Pollia japonica is classified as Commelinaceae, and Japanese ginger belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. Both plants are referred to as ginger in Japan.
