袋撫子(フクロナデシコ) Silene pendula

　ストライプのついた袋状になった萼が、花より目に付きます。

花は、5月14日に投稿した ムシトリナデシコに似ています。

　The striped calyx in the shape of a bag is more conspicuous than the flowers. The flowers are similar to Sweet William Catchfly posted on May 14th.

アンジェラ Angela

　カップ咲きの小型の花が沢山咲き続けます。去年はチラホラとしか咲かなかったけれど、今年は期待できそうです。

　It keeps blooming with many small flower in the shape of tea cup. It bloomed only a little last year, but it looks promising this year.

ストロベリーアイス Strawberry Ice

　見るからに美味しそうです。

　It really looks delicious.

パパメイアン Papa Meilland

　殿堂入りを果たした黒薔薇の代表的品種です。

　It is a representative variety of black roses that have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

セブンスヘブン Seventh Heaven

　あまり知られていませんが、最も端正な形をしたバラの一つだと思います。

　It's not well known, but I think it's one of the most neatly shaped roses.

スイート アフトン Sweet Afton

　この柔らかなグラデーションが、スイートアフトンの持ち味です。

　花形の良いシャルル・ド・ゴールとは、なかなか出会えません。

　It's hard to meet Charles de Gaulle, which has a good floral form.

ジャストジョーイ just joy

　深みのあるオレンジ色です。蕾のときは色が濃く、咲き進むと薄い色になっていきます。

　The bud has a deep orange color. The color is dark when it is a bud, and it gets brighter as it blooms.

ヤセウツボ common broomrape

　葉緑素を持たないので色は褐色、そして、その姿とともに、なんとなく不気味さを感じさせる外来の寄生植物です。牧草に混じって日本に伝わり、生態系に害を与えると見做されています。

　It has no chlorophyll, so it is brown, and with its appearance, it is a nonnative parasitic plant that makes you feel weird. It was unintentionally mixed into pasturage and was imported to Japan. And it is considered to be environmentally harmful.

アカザ fat hen

　茎は直立しており、秋になると木質化して固くなるので、杖の材料になるそうです。草ですから、杖に使えるほど固くなるとは思えません。毎年、秋になったら確認したいと思うのですが、雑草として扱われ、それまでには刈られてしまいます。

　以前、庭に種を蒔いたのですが、芽は出ませんでした。

　The stem is upright, and in the fall it becomes lignification and hard, and it is said that it can be used as a material for walking stick. It is a grass that does not seem to be hard enough to be used as a stick. I'd like to check it in the fall, but it will be treated as a weed and will be cut by then.

紫詰草(ムラサキツメクサ) red clover

　花に近寄ってみると、舟形光背(ふながたこうはい)を背に、バンザイする人の集団が見えます。

野茨(ノイバラ) Japanese rose

　ノイバラとヤマブキ、ハマナスは、ともに似た花をつけます。どれも英名では、Japanese roseと言われています。関わることの少ないものの名前は、あまり細分化されないということでしょう。こんなときの共通認識のためには、やはり学名の必要性を感じます。でも、学名は味気ないですね。

　These plants, Japanese name: noibara, yamabuki and hamanasu, have similar flowers. It seems that all of them are called Japanese rose in English. Names for things that have less involved our lives are probably less subdivided. I think the scientific name is necessary to have common recognition in such cases. However, the scientific name is bland.

ヘラ大葉子 (ヘラオオバコ) ribwort plantain

　花火のように放射状にひろがる雄しべが、このヘラオオバコを特徴づけています。ヘラオオバコは繁殖力が強いので、生態系に被害を及ぼす恐れのある外来種とみなされています。でも、イエローカードであり、レッドカードではありません。

　Stamens which spark like fireworks characterize this ribwort plantain. It's  considered an exotic species that has the potential to damage the ecosystem of  Japan due to its fertility. But it's a yellow card, not a red card.

ニセアカシア false acacia

　川沿いに何本か自生して、芳香を放っています。

ニセアカシアは、一般にアカシアと呼ばれ、歌謡曲にもよく登場します。一方、真正のアカシアは、ミモザと呼ばれています。でも、正確にはミモザアカシアです。ミモザアカシアは、黄色の房状のポンポン咲きの小さな花を付ける木です。

　Some false acacias grow naturally along the river and emit an intoxicating aroma.

　The following is a Japanese circumstance.

　False acacia is commonly called acacia and often appears in Japanese old popular songs. On the other hand, authentic acacia is called mimosa. But to be accurate, that's mimosa acacia. Mimosa acacia is a tree with small yellow tufted pompon type blooms.

カルミア kalmia

　カール・オルフが作曲した、カルミナ・ブラーナという世俗カンタータがあります。花の名前と似ているので、何か語源で何か繋がりがあるのかと思いましたが、綴も違うし、何ら関係のないことが分かりました。

　There is a secular cantata called Carmina Burana composed by Carl Orff. To the Japanese sense of hearing, the name of the flower and the title of the song are similar, so I wondered if there was any connection with the etymology, but the spelling was different and I found that it had nothing to do with it.

突抜忍冬(ツキヌキニンドウ) trumpet honeysuckle

　和名は、茎が葉を突き抜けた形にちなんだ名前です。一方、英名は、花の形からきた名前です。私は初めてこの花を見たとき、茎が葉を突き抜ける形状に、より強い印象を持ちました。

　The Japanese name is named after the stem that penetrates the leaves. On the other hand, the English name comes from the shape of a flower. When I first saw this flower, I was more impressed by the shape of the stems penetrating the leaves.

日本雨蛙(ニホンアマガエル) Japanese tree frog

　梅雨の時期が近づき、我が家にもカエルが現れる季節になりました。

　肉食性のカエルが、大きな獲物を飲み込むときは、眼球を引っ込め眼球の裏側で口の中の獲物を、のどの奥に押しこむと聞きました。

　話は変わりますが、サメは獲物を捕食する時、目が白目になるのを何かの映画で見たことがあります。なぜかはわかりません。

　The rainy season is approaching, and frogs have showed up in my garden.

　Someone told me that when a insectivorous frog swallows a large prey, it retracts the both eyeballs and pushes the prey in the mouth into the back of the throat with behind the eyeballs.

　By the way, I've seen sharks turn their eyes white, in another word, eyeballs are inverted, in a movie when they catch their prey. I'm not sure why.

虫取り撫子(ムシトリナデシコ) Sweet William Catchfly

　鮮烈なピンク色が目を引きます。

　ムシトリナデシコは、茎に粘液を分泌する部分があり、そこで虫を捕らえることができるそうです。その部分は、葉の少し下の部分にあり、茶色くなっています。手で触るとベタつきますが、それほどの粘着力はありません。たとえ、虫を捕らえたとしても、食虫植物ではないので、その虫を消化吸収することはできません。では、何のための粘液かといいますと、受粉に貢献せず、蜜だけ吸いに来る蟻の侵入を、防ぐためと言われています。

　The bright pink color is eye-catching.

　Parts of the stem of "Sweet William Catchfly" secrete mucus, and someone says that it can catch insects. That part is just below the leaves and is brown. It has a little sticky feel. Even if it catches an insect, it can neither digest nor absorb, because it is not a carnivorous plant. Then, what is the mucus for? It is said to prevent the invasion of ants that do not contribute to pollination and only suck honey.

夕化粧(ユウゲショウ) rose evening primrose

　夕化粧と、名前に"夕"がついていますが、"昼"に咲いているのを見ます。昼化粧の方が、体を表すように思いますす。でも、夕の方が趣がありますね。

　The name includes "evening", but you see it bloom in the "daytime." I think the name of rose daytime primrose is more representative of the body, but evening is more tasty than daytime.

矢車菊(ヤグルマギク) cornflower

　ヤグルマギクを、ドライフラワーにして楽しまれてる方は多いと思います。

　ツタンカーメンの棺には、ヤグルマギクの花輪が添えられ、3500年経っても花の原形は保たれていたそうです。その花輪は、ツタンカーメンの妻、アンケセナーメンが添えたのでしょうね。

　There are many people who enjoy making cornflowers into dried flowers.

　I heard that the coffin of Tutankhamun was accompanied by a wreath of cornflowers and it remained in its original shape even after 3500 years. Perhaps, the wreath was placed by Tutankhamun's wife, Ankhesenamen.

鈴蘭(スズラン) Lily of the valley

　春になると日当たりの悪い塀の陰で、わずかのスズランは咲き始め、その存在を思い出します。

　Near the wall with little sunlight, in the spring, some lilies of the valley begin to bloom, reminding me of their existence.

鉄線(テッセン) clematis

　和名の漢字表記は、「鉄線」という何とも味気ない名前です。

　The meaning of the Japanese name of this plant is iron wire, which is a really dull name, I think.

ハンカチの木 handkerchief tree

　ハンカチの木という名前の木に花が咲いていると、教えていただいたので見てきました。初めて見る木で、高さは10mはあるような高木です。

　花は、二枚の花びらに包まれているように見えますが、この花びらに見えるものは、実は、苞と呼ばれる葉が変形したものだそうです。地面に落ちた苞は、白色で薄くて柔らかく、ハンカチのようでした。

　I was told a tree named Handkerchief Tree is in bloom, so I went there and checked it out.  This is the first time I see the tree. The height is may be around 10m. 

　The flower appears to be wrapped in two petals, but these petals is actually a deformed leaf called a bract. The bracts that fell to the ground were white, thin and soft, so it resembled a handkerchief.

紫露草(ムラサキツユクサ) spiderwort

　花びらが紫色、雄しべの先が黄色。良いコントラストを作り出しています。　

　The petals are violet and the tips of the stamens are yellow, this combination creates a good contrast.

オダマキ columbine

　とても表現が難しい不思議な形をした花です。花の色は豊富で、白や、ピンク、赤、オレンジ、黄、青、紫、複数の色を含む複色などがあります。

　It is a flower with a mysterious shape which is difficult to express. The flowers have plenty of many colors such as white, pink, red, orange, yellow, blue, purple, and certain flowers contain several colors.

木香薔薇(モッコウバラ) banksia rose

　 随分前になりますが、モッコウバラの挿し木に失敗しました。ただ枝を土に挿しただけなので当然です。

　Long time ago, I failed to grow banksia rose from a cutting. It was the natural result because I just put a branch in the soil.

大蔓穂(オオツルボ) Cuban lily

　中央の蕾の塊に生命力の強さを感じます。

　I feel the strength of vitality in the cluster of buds in the center.

里桜(サトザクラ) Satozakura

　八重咲きのサトザクラは遅咲きです。

　一重咲きの桜の花びらは5弁、６弁より多い花は八重咲き、およそ100枚を超える場合は菊咲きと呼びます。

　葉は、柔らかそうなので塩漬けにしたくなりましたが、公園の桜なのでそうもいきません。

　Double-flowered Satozakura is late-blooming. 

　The single-flowered cherry blossoms have  five petals, the flowers with more than six-petals are called double-flowered blossoms, and when the number exceeds about 100, they are called chrysanthemum-bloomed, 菊咲: kiku-zaki.

　I wanted to salt the leaves because they look soft, but I can't because the tree belongs to the park.

アゲハチョウ Swallowtail butterfly

　我が家を訪れたアゲハチョウです。羽に傷んだ部分がないアゲハチョウを見ることは、あまりないことです。

　It is a swallowtail butterfly that visited my garden. It's unusual to see a swallowtail butterfly with complete wings.

花梨(カリン) Chinese quince

　樹皮は、緑色と茶褐色のまだら模様で、所々剥がれ落ちており、幹には特徴があります。

　Trunk of Chinese quince has a unique feature, the bark has a mottled pattern of green and brown, and peeling in places.
