アジサイ プファウ Hydrangea macrophylla Pfau

　葉が噛じられていますが、誰が食べたのでしょう？

　ナメクジはアジサイの葉を食べるそうですが、ビールも好きなようで、お皿にビールそそいでおくと、周りに集まってくるそうです。

　バラは咲き終わったと思っていましたが、バラ園にはまだ沢山咲いていました。私の体内時計が狂ったような感覚に襲われました。

ノウゼンカズラ trumpet creeper

　藤と同じように蔓にしては幹が太く、見るからに丈夫でエネルギーたっぷりに見える植物です。花は次々に咲きますが、個々の花は意外に短命です。

　It has a thick trunk for vines like wisteria, and it looks like strong and full of energy. The flowers bloom one after another, but the individual flowers are shorter-lasting than I expected.

ナンテン(南天) heavenly bamboo

　ナンテンの花がさりげなく咲いていました。秋の果実は目立ちますが、初夏の花はそれほど印象に残りません。

　Heavenly bamboo flowers were blooming without anyone's noticing. Autumn fruits of this plant stand out, but early summer flowers are less impressive.

アカンサス bear's breeches

　葉の間から上に突き出た花茎に、独特の形の花がついている大変目立つ植物です。葉の形は装飾デザインに利用されます。

　It is a very conspicuous plant with uniquely shaped flowers on the flower stalks that protrude upward from between the leaves. The shape of the leaves is used for ornamental designs.

ウリカエデ uri maple

　ウリカエデの木肌は、特に若木の時は瓜の表面のように緑色でなめらかです。この皮は切り口から指で簡単に剥がすことができます。剥がすと水分でびっしょり濡れた白色のなめらかな材が現れます。

　この水分は、もしかしてメイプルシロップのように甘いのではないかと思いましたが、無色無臭で味はありませんでした。

　The bark of uri maple is green and smooth like the surface of melon, especially in its youth. This skin can be easily peeled off from the cutting site with your fingers. Just then it was peeled off, a white smooth material that is soaked with tree sap appears.

　I thought this sap might be as sweet as maple syrup, but it was colorless, odorless and had no taste.

ドクダミ Houttynia cordata

　八重咲のドクダミは珍しいと思っていましたが、毎年どこかで見かけます。

　I thought that double-flowered Houttuynia cordata is rare, but I see it somewhere every year.

立葵(タチアオイ) hollyhock

　小さな花弁が、めしべを覆うようになっているのを時々見かけます。

　I sometimes see a small petal covering a pistil.

泥バチ potter wasp

　一週間ほど放置していた自転車のカバーに、泥バチの巣が作られていました。中は空でした。

　A potter wasp built a nest on my bicycle cover which had been left unattended for about a week. The inside was empty.

見上げれば when you look up

　林の中で見上げれば、自分が中心にいるという錯覚におちいります。

　If you look up in the woods, you will feel the illusion that you are in the center.

マムシグサ Jack in the pulpit

　私には、一見して怪しい実に見えるのですが、美味しそうという人もいます。今は緑色ですが、秋には朱色に変わり、ますます怪しくなります。全草が毒です。

　一株の葉にのみ、斑(ふ)と呼ばれる白い模様が入っていました。

　It looks suspicious fruit at first glance to me, but some people think it looks delicious. It's green now, but it turns vermilion in the fall, making it even more suspicious. The entire plant is poisonous.

　There were a few "Jack in the pulpit", or Arisaema serratum, there, but only one  had white patterns on the leaves.

柏葉紫陽花(カシワバアジサイ) hydrangea quercifolia

　円錐状に咲くカシワバアジサイは、旧約聖書に登場する巨大なバベル塔を想起させます。

　The hydrangea quercifolia makes me think of the giant tower of Babel in the Old Testament.

花吹雪(ハナフブキ) "hana-fubuki" hydrangea

　装飾花には、鋸歯(きょし)があり咲き始めは真っ白です。

　The ornamental flowers have serrations and are pure white at the beginning of bloom.

ピンクアナベル pink smooth hydrangea

　ピンクアナベルが咲きかけです。このあじさい、日本ではアナベルと呼ばれていますが、英語では、アナベルよりsmooth hydrangeaが普通だそうです。

　Pink Anabels are about to bloom. This hydrangea is known as Anabel in Japan, but it seems like smooth hydrangea is more common than Anabel in English.

シモツケとシモツケソウ simotuke & simotuke-sou

　名前も花もよく似ているので、混同しがちの花たちです。両方ともバラ科の植物ですが、シモツケは木ですが、シモツケソウは草です。どちらも背の高さは１ｍ位でそれほどかわりません。

　We tend to confuse these two flowers because their names and shapes are very similar. Both are plants of the Rosaceae family, but simotuke, or Japanese spirea, is a tree and simotuke-sou, or Filipendula multijuga, is a grass. Both heights are about 1m, there is not so different.

木苺(キイチゴ) bramble

　キイチゴを見つけたました。一粒だけ食べて満足しました。

　I found some brambles. I ate one grain and was satisfied.

白蝶草(ハクチョウソウ) Gaura

　それぞれの花はすぐに枯れますが、半年間ほど次々に咲き続けます。

　Each flower dies in a few days, but the flowers continue to bloom one after another for about half a year.

ヤマウルシ Japanese sumac (Toxicodendron trichocarpum)

　ヤマウルシは、紅葉すると赤やオレンジ色になりできれいですが、さわるとかぶれるので注意が必要です。

　葉は奇数羽状複葉と呼ばれる構成で、葉柄（ようへい）は赤味を帯びているのが普通です。この葉の形を覚えておきましょう。

　The leaves turn red or orange in autumn,  it's wonderful. However, if you touch it you will get rash, so you must be careful.

　The leaves are called odd pinnate compound leaves, and the petioles are usually reddish. Remember the shape of this leaf.

ユーレカ Eureka

　ユーレカ(Eureka)は、古代ギリシア語で「分かった」という感嘆詞です。

　アルキメデスは、金の純度の測定方法を思いついたときに、ユーレカ、ユーレカと2回叫んだと言われています。

　そのユーレカがどうしてこのバラの名前になったのでしょう。私は、ユーレカと叫ぶことはできません。

　Eureka is an interjection of "understood" in ancient Greek.

　Archimedes allegedly shouted Eureka! and Eureka! twice when he found a method for measuring the purity of gold.

　I can't imagine why Eureka is the name of this rose. I can't shout Eureka!

カクテル(半つるバラ、シュラブ) cocktail(Shrub)

　今シーズンは、花数が少くなく残念です。それでも、花の中心は黄色く回りは鮮烈な赤色のカクテルは存在感があります。

　It is unfortunate that there are few flowers in this season. Even so, the center of the flower is yellow and the surrounding areas are bright red, so it has a strong presence.

サイレンス・イズ・ゴールデン(つるバラ) silence is golden(CL)

　パンデミックのこの時代の標語になりそうな花の名前です。

　It is the name of a flower that could be the slogan in the middle of pandemics.

ベイシーズパープルローズ basye’s purple rose

　いつも恥ずかしげに咲いています。柔らかい花びらがそうみせるのでしょう。

　It is always blooming shyly. The soft petals maybe make it look like so.

ウルメールムンスター(つるバラ) Ulmer munster(SB)

　花の名前は、ドイツのウルム大聖堂の名前にちなんでつけられました。聖堂はゴシック様式の壮大な建物です。一方、花は鮮烈な赤色で華やかな雰囲気を作ります。

　つるバラが聖堂の尖塔に上り詰める様を想像すると楽しいです。

　The name of the flower is named after the Ulmer Münster in Germany. The cathedral is a magnificent Gothic architecture. On the other hand, the flowers are bright red and create a gorgeous atmosphere.

　It's fun to imagine a climbing rose climbing up to the spire of a cathedral.

アンジェラ(つるバラ) angela(CL)

　アンジェラは、本来沢山の花をつけるバラで花がびっしりと詰まって咲くのですが、今年はちょっとさみしい咲き方です。

　Angela is a rose that has many flowers that bloom closely, but this year it's a bit lonely.

アメリカ(つるバラ) America(CL)

　赤色に黄色を混ぜた明るい色に心地よさを感じます。

　I feel comfortable with the bright color that is a mixture of red and yellow.

空穂草(ウツボグサ) utsubo-gusa

 　昔、武士が弓矢を入れる携帯容器は、靫（うつぼ）と呼ばれました。その形に、花が似ていることが、名前の由来のようです。

　The distribution of this plant is widespread in Europe, North Africa, Australia, North America, etc., but I have not found the English name. utubo-gusa is a Japanese name.

　In the old days, the name of the portable vessel for samurai to put a bow and arrow was utubo. So it was named utubo-gusa(utubo-grass) because the shape of the flower is similar to that.

立浪草(タツナミソウ) Scutellaria indica

　山道に沿って、自生のタツナミソウが咲いていました。

　Wild Scutellaria indica were blooming along the mountain road.

ホタルブクロ spotted bellflower

　ホタルブクロを見ると、タイ北部のチェンマイで開かれるお祭りで、夜空に放たれる天燈を連想します。

　袋の中を覗いても、ホタルはいませんでした。

　Spotted bellflowers associate me with sky lanterns that are released in the night sky at the festival in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

　There weren't any fireflies in the bag. This flower is called "Hotaru-bukuro" in Japanese which means a bag for firefly.
