サルスベリ crape myrtle

サルスベリの根本から、ひこばえが何本か真っ直ぐ上へ伸びていました。ひこばえとは、根本から新たに生えてくる芽です。樹木の種類によらず、ひこばえは成長が早く、真っ直ぐに伸びます。
成長の速さと直線性は関係があるかもしれません。

Some suckers stand straight from the root of this crape myrtle. A sucker is a new bud emerging from a base of a tree. Regardless of the kind of the tree, the sucker grows rapidly and stand straight.
I suppose the growth speed of the sucker is related to the straightness.

マタタビと猫 silver vine and cats

葉のついたマタタビの小枝を持ち帰り庭に置きましたが、近所の猫達はまったく興味を示しませんでした。

I brought a twig with some leaves in my house and put them in the garden. But the neighboring cats did not show interest in them at all.

タラノキ樹液 sap of Japanese angelica tree

タラノキから樹液がサンゴのような形に析出していました。口に含んでみましたが味も香りもなく、また溶けることもなくがっかりしました。

A Japanese angelica tree precipitated its sap in the form of a coral.
 I tried it, but it had no taste and fragrance and didn't melt in my mouth also. I was disappointed in the result.

クサギ Harlequin glory bower

花が咲きはじめました。今年はクサキで草木染めをして見ようと思っています。

Flower of Harlequin glory bower has begun to bloom. I'll dye something with Harlequin glory bower this year.

オオカメノキ Viburnum furcatum

行きには気がつかなかったのですが、帰りに赤い実を見つけました。
人間の視野（左右）は、200度あると言われていますが、はっきり見えているのは意識した部分のみです。
この木は、多分オオカメノキです。

I didn't notice the red fruits on the way to a destination, but I found those on the way back.
It is said that we have the 200 degrees horizontal field of view, but we can see clearly only a part we are paying attention.
This tree may be a Viburnum furcatum.

無香料洗濯石鹸 fragrance-free laundry soap

今年は暑いので、スズメバチが例年より多く発生しています。野山を歩いているとスズメバチにまつわりつかれ、怖い思いをすることが多いです。
スズメバチは、甘い香料や黒色に反応すると云われているので、無香料の洗濯石鹸で洗った、明るい色の服を着て、フィールドに出るようにしました。
その効果は明確ではありませんが、以前ほどスズメバチは、私に関心を示さなくなったようです。でも、油断は禁物です。
慣れると分からなくなりますが、香料入りの洗剤の匂いは相当強いです。

There are a lot of hornets in the field than usual, because it's very hot this summer. A hornet often makes a circle around me when I walk in fields, so I feel scary.
Both sweet fragrance and a black-color will excite a hornet, so when I go out to the fields, I wear clothes in the bright color washed with a fragrance-free laundry soap by habit.
The effect is not clear, but a hornet doesn't seem to have interest to me like before. I can't relax yet.
The ordinary laundry soap contains a strong-smelling substance. We don't notice the smell, if we get used to it.

ギボウシ plantain lily

ちょっと撮りに来るのが遅かったです。基部の方の花は萎れています。

It was a little later to come to take a picture. The flowers at the base were beginning to wilt.

ミソハギ Kythrum anceps

公園の湿地に生えていました。毎日、暑い日が続いていますが、この花は暑さに強いそうです。

It grew on the damp ground of the park. It's really hot every day. It is said that this flower is strong in the heat.

オニユリ tiger lily

花茎の高さが60cm位なので、コオニユリかと思いましたが、珠芽（むかご）がついているので、オニユリです。香りはあまり強くありませんでした。湿度が低いと、あまり香りがしないそうです。

The height of this flower stalk was around 60cm, so I thought whether it was a Lilium leichtlinii, but I decided it was a tiger lily, because it had bulblets. The fragrance of this flower was not so strong. When it is low humidity, they say it doesn't smell much.

トウモロコシのヒゲ corn silk

トウモロコシのひげは、粒の一つ一つから伸びた長い雌しべです。つまり、ひげの本数と粒の数は同じであり、600位といわれています。

A corn silk is the long pistil which grew from one of the grains. In fact the number of corn silks is the same as the number of the grains. It is said that the number is around 600.

コノテガシワ chinese arborvite

ヒノキ科の植物です。葉の裏と表の区別がありません。実には、お星様のような角があるのも独特です。

It belongs to the Cupressaceae. There is no distinction between the front and the back of a leaf. It is also unique that the seeds have bosses like as "Kompeito".

アガパンサス agapanthus

今日の日中の気温は、私の体温を上回りました。
暑い時期に見るこのブルーは、一服の清涼剤です。

Today's daytime temperature exceeded my temperature.
In these hot days, this blue color is a breath of fresh air.

香り高いユリ fragrant lily

ユリの香りは強いので、遠くから咲いていることに気づきます。

The fragrance of a lily is strong, so I notice the lily is blooming from a distance.

ルドベキア dudbeckeia

多分、ルドベキアと思いますが、乾燥した空き地に咲いていました。

These may be dudbeckeias which bloom in the dry vacant wasteland.

ヤブカンゾウ orange daylily

ヤブカンゾウは、種子を作らない植物です。球根の分割で増えるので、それぞれの個体は、みんなクローンです。ヒガンバナも同様に種子を作ることができないので、球根で増えます。我家の庭に、自然に生えてきたヒガンバナの球根はどのように紛れ込んできたのか疑問です。

The orange daylily does not produce seeds. So, it propagates itself by dividing bulbs. Each one is all clones. The cluster-amaryllis is the same, too. There is the cluster-amaryllis which grew naturally in my garden, I doubt how the bulb came in here.

リョウブ Clethra barbinervis

リョウブは、飢饉のときの非常食になる木でした。新芽と花は美味しくないけれど、食べられるそうです。樹皮が薄く剥がれ滑らかな表面になるので、見分けやすいです。

The Clethra barbinervis had been an emergency food in the case of the famine. These are not delicious, but sprouts and flowers are eatable. Because the bark comes off thinly and becomes the smooth surface, it is easy to distinguish it.

オカトラノオ loosestrife

房のような形になった沢山の花は、下方から咲きます。先端の花が咲く頃は、根本側の花は萎れています。同時に咲けばよいのに、何が咲く順序を決めているのでしょうか。

Many flowers which became the form such as the cluster bloom from the lower part. When the flowers of the tip section bloom, the flowers of the lower part fade. I hope they bloom at the same time. I wonder what decides the order of flowering.

マムシグサ jack in the pulpit

名前も色も、毒々しい植物ですが、実際に有毒です。

The Japanese name of this grass means a pit viper.
Both the name and the color are poisonous-looking, actually this plant is toxic.

思ったとおり I knew it

思ったとおり、テッポウユリはまだ咲いていませんでした。

The easter lily has not yet bloomed as I thought.

ハナイカダ Helwingia japonica

2m位の高さまで、スッと伸びた緑の茎に目が止まり、近寄るとハナイカダの木でした。しばしば、里山でハナイカダを見かけますが、このように見上げて透過光で見るのは初めてです。

I noticed a shrub had light green stems growing up straight to around 2m high. I approached it and found it was a Helwingia japonica. I often see a Helwingia japonica at the village-vicinity mountain, but this is the first time I look up and watch in transmitted light.

ラビットアイブルーベリー rabbiteye blueberry

ラビットアイブルーベリーの実は美味しく、また装飾的にも美しい。

The rabbit-eye blueberry is delicious and is also beautiful ornament.

ネジバナ Lady's tresses

右巻きか左巻き、どうやって決まるのでしょう。

Clockwise or counterclockwise. I wonder how they select the direction.
