検疫 quarantine

14世紀にヨーロッパでは、伝染病の黒死病が大流行しました。感染防止のため、伝染病の疑いが出た船舶は、検疫期間として沖合で40日間の待機が強いられました。イタリア語では、"40の" を表す形容詞に、"quaranta" があります。これが検疫 "quarantine" の語源になったと聞きました。ちなみに、フランス語の "40" は、"quarante" です。他にも、4にまつわる単語は、"qua" で始まるものが多いですね。

船舶間の通信に使われる世界共通の旗として、国際信号旗があります。この旗には、検疫に関する旗もあります。Yellow Jackと呼ばれる信号旗Limaは、港では、検疫停船中を意味し、海上では、貴船は直ちに停船されたしです。

There are the international maritime signal flags are used in communication between ships. Those include the flag about quarantine. Signal flag "Lima" called the "Yellow Jack" which when flown means "The ship is under quarantined" in harbor, "You should stop your vessel instantly" at sea.

虹の玉 sedum

歩道際に生えていた多肉植物の虹の玉です。虹の玉と呼ばれるそうですが、紅の玉の様相でした。

ネコヤナギ rose-gold pussy willow

雄花のおしべの先端には赤やくが付いています。やくが開くと中から黄色の花粉が出てきます。今日は、黄色というより金色に輝いていました。

The stamens of the male flower have a red anther at the tip. When it opens, yellow pollens come out from it. Today's pollens looked like shining golden rather than yellow.

コロナウイルス感染拡大 coronavirus outbreak

コロナウイルス感染防止のため、個人的なものを含め、予定されたイベェントが次々に中止になります。

ヒアシンス hyacinth

せっかくのヒアシンスでしたが、スギ花粉が大量に飛んでいたので、香りも嗅がずに退散しました。
