クロッカス crocus

サンダルと同じ名前かと思ったら、サンダルはcrocsでした。

I had been thinking a sandal brand has the same name, but I noticed it was the crocs.

クリスマスローズ Helleborus

下を向いて咲く控えめな花ですが、毒をもつそうです。ヘレボルスという名は、ギリシア語の殺すと食べ物との合成造語と言われています。でも、その毒性は、それほど強いものではないそうです。

It is a modest flower that  is facing down, but it seems to have poison. The name hellebore is known in Greek as a synthetic term for poison and food. However, the toxicity is not so strong.

検疫 quarantine

14世紀にヨーロッパでは、伝染病の黒死病が大流行しました。感染防止のため、伝染病の疑いが出た船舶は、検疫期間として沖合で40日間の待機が強いられました。イタリア語では、"40の" を表す形容詞に、"quaranta" があります。これが検疫 "quarantine" の語源になったと聞きました。ちなみに、フランス語の "40" は、"quarante" です。他にも、4にまつわる単語は、"qua" で始まるものが多いですね。

船舶間の通信に使われる世界共通の旗として、国際信号旗があります。この旗には、検疫に関する旗もあります。Yellow Jackと呼ばれる信号旗Limaは、港では、検疫停船中を意味し、海上では、貴船は直ちに停船されたしです。

In Europe in the 14th century, the epidemic of the Black Death disease was widespread. To prevent transmission, the ship suspected of having an infectious disease were forced to wait 40 days offshore as a quarantine. In Italian, the adjective for 40 is quaranta. I heard that this was the origin of the "quarantine". By the way, "40" in French is "quarante". Many other words related to 4 begin with "qua".

There are the international maritime signal flags are used in communication between ships. Those include the flag about quarantine. Signal flag "Lima" called the "Yellow Jack" which when flown means "The ship is under quarantined" in harbor, "You should stop your vessel instantly" at sea.

虹の玉 sedum

歩道際に生えていた多肉植物の虹の玉です。虹の玉と呼ばれるそうですが、紅の玉の様相でした。

It is a succulent plant called a rainbow ball that grew on the sidewalk. It is called a rainbow ball, but it looks like a deep red ball.

河津桜 Kawazu-zakura

早咲きの桜、河津桜が満開を迎えました。

Early blooming cherry blossoms, Kawazu-zakura blossoms, have been in full bloom.

ハナニラ Spring star

誰も世話をしていませんが、今年もハナニラが道端に咲き始めました。

No one is looking after these Spring stars, but the flowers have begun to bloom on the roadside this year again.
