丸葉空木(マルバウツギ) fuzzy pride-of-Rochester

　マルバウツギが、もろい岩盤の割れ目から生えていました。この木がしっかり根を張る前に、岩盤が崩れてしまいそうで気がかりです。

　A  fuzzy pride-of-Rochester grows from a crack in the fragile bedrock. I'm worried that the bedrock is going to crumble before this tree spread its roots.

古い陶器 old pottery

　今にも崩れそうなお店のウインドウに、実用品として使われていたと思われる、古い陶器が陳列されていました。

　Old pottery, which seems to had been used in everyday life, was displayed in the window of the shop that was about to collapse.

ナンテンには殺菌作用 nandina with bactericidal effect

　この由緒あるお寺のお墓には、あちこちにナンテンが育っています。ナンテンには古くから殺菌作用があることが知られているので、土葬の時代の名残かもしれません。

　Nandina grows here and there in a graveyard of this historic temple.

It has long been known that nandina has a bactericidal effect, so it may be a remnant of the days of the burial.

千両(センリョウ) sarcandra glabra

　センリョウとマンリョウはよく似た植物ですが、異なる種類です。葉の上に実をつけるのがセンリョウで、葉の下に実をつけるのがマンリョウです。

　"Sarcandra glabra" and "Coral bush" are very similar plants, but they are different species. Sarcandra glabra bears fruit above the leaves, and Coral bush bears fruit under the leaves.

　Both names mean a lot of money, so they are popular plants for New Year's lucky charms in Japan.

猩猩草(ショウジョウソウ) Mexican fire plant

　先端は緑色、基部が朱色の葉は珍しいです。これは、ショウジョウソウと思いますが、葉の多くは長卵型をしており、ヴァイオリン型は一部しかないので、近縁種かも知れません。

　Leaves with a green tip and a vermilion base are uncommon. I think this plant is a Mexican fire plant, but it may be a related species, as many of its leaves are long-ovate and only some are violin-shaped.

星万年青(ホシオモト) Eucomis autumnalis

　頭の形状からパイナップルリリーとも呼ばれます。あまり見かけない植物です。

　It is also called a pineapple lily because of its head shape. I don't see this plant often.

竹林 bamboo grove

　竹は日本で普通に見られるので、日本古来の植生のように思われますが、中国原産です。

　竹やぶは、地下茎が縦横に這っているので地盤が強いらしく、地震のときは竹やぶに逃げろと、子供の頃教えられました。

　Bamboo is common in Japan, so it tends to be considered ancient Japanese vegetation, but it really originated in China.

　The ground of a bamboo grove seems to be strong because the rhizomes stretch out to mesh pattern, so when I was a child, I was taught to go there if I felt an earthquake.
