彼岸花(ヒガンバナ) spider lily
畑の際に、紅白の彼岸花が咲いていました。白い彼岸花は繁殖力が弱いので、赤い彼岸花ほど見かける機会は多くありません。

柿(カキ) persimmon
打ち捨てられた柿の木。葉はほとんど落ちていますが、実はまだいっぱい残っています。
柿の実の糖度が高いことはよく知られていますが、意外にも渋柿の方が甘柿より糖度は高いです。渋柿を日にさらし、干し柿にすると、水分と一緒に渋みが抜けて糖度は50%にもあがり、蜂蜜の糖度である80%に近づきます。
近年、クマの生活圏が人間のそれと重なってきており、人的被害が増えています。蜂蜜と同様に甘い柿も、クマを呼び寄せるのかもしれません。頻繁に市役所からクマの目撃情報が届きます。でも、来月でクマの活動期間もいよいよ終了です。
動物園は除き、日本に生息する熊はヒグマとツキノワグマの２種類です。ヒグマは北海道のみ、ツキノワグマは本州以南に生息しています。

熟したゴーヤ mature bitter melon
ゴーヤの果実は熟すと表面は朱色になり形が崩れ、中からぬるぬるした赤い物質に覆われた種が現れます。
この赤い部分は、美味しいと聞きましたので食べてみました。でも、指で掴もうとしても、種はぬるりと指の間をすり抜けてしまいます。割り箸使って種を口に入れると、赤い部分はほんのりとした甘みがあります。この部分はほんの僅かな量なので、いくら種を食べても食べた気がしませんでした。

雌待宵草(メマツヨイグサ) common evening primrose
この花は、暗くなると大きく開くと聞いて、暗くなってから見に行きましたが、違いは分かりませんでした。秋になり気温が下がると、昼にも咲くようになるとも聞きました。そうか、秋になり気温も下がったので、明るさの影響を受けなくなったのかも。

キクイモ Jerusalem artichoke
沢山の黄色い花が水路の際に咲いていました。キクイモの花のように見えますが、背丈が１ｍ位と低いので、どうやらキクイモではないようです。キクイモに似た花をつける植物は、いくつもあるので、正体がなんであるか私には分かりません。
キクイモを以前に育てたことがありますが、栽培を止めても、取り残した塊茎があると、また育ってくるという、とてつもなく生命力の強い植物です。塊茎はスライスして油で炒めると美味しかったです。でも、買って食べるほどのものではありません。
