昼顔(ヒルガオ) false bindweed

　アサガオに似たこの花は、昼間に咲くことから、ヒルガオと今では呼ばれています。ところが、大昔には美しい花という意味で、容花(カオバナ)という名前で、万葉集に登場しています。
　遣唐使が、中国からアサガオを持ち帰ると、同じ顔をした昼間に咲くカオバナを、その対比として、ヒルガオと呼ぶようになったと言われています。
 

　ついでながら、アサガオの咲く時間についてもふれておきます。アサガオは夜になり暗くなってから約９時間後に開花します。つまり、朝に咲く花でなく、朝には咲いている花なのです。

　False bindweed in Japan is called "daytime face" and morning glory is called "morning face."
　This flower, called "daytime face" now,  but appeared in the Manyoshu long ago under the name "kaobana," which meant beautiful flower. The Manyoshu is the oldest collection of Japanese poetry, compiled during the Nara period.
　It is said that when Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty brought back morning glories ("morning face") from China, the "kaobana," or a similar flower that blooms during the day, came to be called "daytime face"  in contrast to "morning face."
 

　Also, let me mention the time when morning glories bloom. Morning glories bloom about nine hours after it gets dark at night. In other words, it is not a flower that blooms in the morning, but a flower that is in bloom in the morning.

夕化粧(ユウゲショウ) rose evening primrose

　名前から夕方に咲くと思われがちですが、実際に開花するのは明け方で、夕方にはしぼんでしまう、一日花です。

　The name implies it blooms in the evening, but it actually blooms at dawn and wilts in the evening; it's a single-day flower.

匂忍冬(ニオイニンドウ) common honeysuckle

　遠くに、草刈機のエンジン音が聞こえます。目当てのニオイニンドウは、刈り取られてしまったと、てっきり思いましたが、せっかく来たので現場まで行って見ると、手前の雑草だけ刈られていたので、かえって近づくことができました。

　I heard the sound of a grass cutter engine in the distance. I believed that the common honeysuckle I was aiming for had already been trimmed. As I came all this way, I went over to the site and found that only the weeds in the foreground had been trimmed, so I could get a closer look.

弱草藤(ナヨクサフジ) smooth vetch

　ナヨクサフジとクサフジの花は、大変良く似ているので、私には区別が難しいです。どちらもマメ科ソラマメ属の植物です。ナヨクサフジは、ヨーロッパ原産の帰化植物であり激増傾向にあります。一方、在来種のクサフジは激減しています。ナヨクサフジのナヨは弱とかきますが、弱い印象はかけらもありません。

　ナヨクサフジは、お互いにつるを絡め合うので、花は大混乱の状況の中で咲きますが、ここではお行儀よく咲いていました。

　The similar appearance of smooth vetch and Vicia cracca flowers makes it hard for me to distinguish them. Both are plants of the genus Vicia in the family Fabaceae. Smooth vetch is an introduced plant native to Europe and is rapidly increasing in number. On the other hand, the native, Vicia cracca, is rapidly decreasing.

　Smooth vetch has tangled vines and the flowers usually bloom in a chaotic situation, but here they were blooming well behaved.

ヤセウツボ common broomrape

　ヤセウツボは、葉緑素をもたないため全体が褐色です。葉緑素を欠く生物は、植物に分類されません。ただし、例外があり、一部の寄生植物や腐生植物は植物に分類されます。ヤセウツボは、マメ科などに寄生する生物で、分類学では植物界として定義されています。

　Common broomrape does not have chlorophyll and is therefore entirely brown. Living things that lack chlorophyll are not classified as plants. However, there are exceptions, and some parasitic and saprophytic things are classified as plants. Common broomrape is a parasitic organism that lives on legumes and other plants, and is classified as part of the Plantae in taxonomy.

苗代苺(ナワシロイチゴ) Rubus parvifolius

　土手に自生するナワシロイチゴの花を見つけました。木苺の一つで赤い実が6月～7月頃に熟します。一見すると、草に見えますが、バラ科の落葉広葉樹です。

　Flowers of Rubus parvifolius were found growing naturally on the banks. The red fruits of this raspberry are ripe from June to July. It appears to be grass at first glance, but it is actually a deciduous broadleaf tree in the Rosaceae family.

とどめ final blow

　以前に、木の幹の中からチェーンが出ているのを見たことがあります。ここでは、フェンスに食い込んだ幹が、切り取られて残されています。そのまま放置しているのは、木が腐ればフェンスを傷つけずに、それを取り除くことができるからなのかもしれません。
　その下の切り株に目を移せば、幹の中央から隆起した部分があることに気がつきます。幹が、再度成長し始めたのかと思い、近寄って確かめました。何と、ダボ（棒状の小片）が打ち込まれているのでした。なんでこんなことが？　根拠のない想像になりますが、切り株が息を吹き返さないよう、穴を開けて除草剤を注入し、とどめを刺したと思われます。
　ドラキュラにとどめを刺す、凄惨な場面を思い出し重い気分になりました。

　In the past, I've seen chains sticking out from inside tree trunks. Here, the trunk that had put the fence inside has been cut away and left behind. Perhaps the reason they left it there is that once the wood rots, it can be removed without causing any damage to the fence.
　If you look at the stump below, you'll notice a raised part in the center of the trunk. I was curious if the trunk had begun to grow again, so I got closer to check it.
It's amazing that a dowel (a small rod-shaped piece) had been driven into it. Why is this done? This is just speculation, but I think they probably put an end to the stump, by drilling holes and injecting herbicide to prevent it from reviving.
　I felt a heavy heart as I remembered the gruesome scene where Dracula was given a final blow.
