クチナシ gardenia

　この花は、八重咲きのクチナシと思います。クチナシの香りは強く、ジャスミンと似ていますが、まったく香りを感じませんでした。
　
　I think this flower is a double-flowered gardenia. Although Gardenia has a strong scent, similar to jasmine, I could not detect any scent from this flower.

半夏生(ハンゲショウ) lizard's tail

　This plant is called "lizard's tail" because its flowers resemble a lizard's tail. It is the leaves with white spots that attract more attention than the flowers. In a similar way, the leaves of silver vine change color and become white. It is said that these color changes are both strategies to attract insects. It's like applying on makeup. I'm interesting in how insects feel.

春ウコン wild turmeric

　おや、こんなところに春ウコンの花が咲いています。
　ウコンには、春に咲く春ウコンと秋に咲く秋ウコンがあります。普通ウコンと呼ばれるのは、秋ウコンを指します。春ウコンと秋ウコンは成分が異なり、ドリンク剤などに配合されるのは秋ウコンです。

　Oh, look! A wild turmeric flower, which blooms in spring, is blooming in a place like this.
　There are two types of turmeric: "wild turmeric", which blooms in the spring, and just "turmeric", which blooms in the fall. "Wild turmeric" and "turmeric" have different ingredients, and the type that is used in energy drinks is "turmeric".

狐の手袋(ジギタリス) foxglove

　ジギタリスの花は、長い花軸に多数並んで咲くはずですが、一つだけポツンと草むらのなかで咲いていました。

　Despite the fact that foxglove flowers are supposed to bloom in large numbers on a long stalk, there was only one flower blooming in the weeds.

ラムエアタービン Ram Air Turbine(RAT)

　航空機には多くの安全対策が施されていますが、依然として事故は起きます。
　それは小学生の頃でした、屋外で遊んでいると、突然地震の短い揺れを感じました。家に帰ると、その揺れは地震でなく旅客機の墜落事故によるものだと知りました。
　今日は、航空機のあまり知られていない非常用装置の一つを紹介します。それはラムエアタービン（RAT）と呼ばれるものです。このシステムは、平常時は機内に格納されていますが、主エンジンやAPUと呼ばれる補助動力装置がすべて故障した場合、バッテリー駆動で自動的に機外に飛び出します。機外に押し出された部分には、空気の流れで回転する羽根車が付いています。この回転力を利用して、最低限の操縦に必要な電力や油圧が供給されます。このお陰で無線交信ができたり、操縦系統などに関連する油圧系統を動かすことができるようになります。これで飛行機は滑空飛行できるようになります。飛行機は想像以上に滑空飛行が可能であり、RATのお陰でトウモロコシ畑に、何とか着陸できた事故例もあります。RATは、主として大型の飛行機に装備されています。

　Despite the many safety measures on board aircraft, accidents still occur.
　It happened when I was in elementary school.  While playing outside, I suddenly felt a short earthquake tremor. When I got home, I learned that the shaking was not an earthquake. It was the result of a plane crash. Today, I will be sharing with you one of the less well-known emergency systems on the aircraft. The name of this system is the Ram Air Turbine (RAT). This system is normally stored inside the aircraft, but if the main engines and auxiliary power units (APUs) fail, it will automatically pop outside the aircraft using battery power. The part protruding from the outside of the aircraft has an impeller that rotates due to the airflow. The electrical and hydraulic power required for minimal maneuvering is provided by this rotational force. The ability to communicate over the radio and operate hydraulic systems related to the flight control system is made possible by this. Planes are capable of gliding beyond your imagination, and there have been instances where a plane was able to land in a cornfield due to the RAT. RATs are mainly found on larger aircraft.

山法師(ヤマボウシ) Cornus kousa

　ハナミズキの花と思いましたが、花弁の先が尖っているので、これはヤマボウシです。花弁は普通4枚ですが、これには5枚あります。
　花弁と書きましたが、正確には花弁ではなく、葉が変化した苞と呼ばれるものです。

　At first, I thought it was a dogwood flower, but when I saw that the petals had pointed tips, I realised it was a Cornus kousa. Typically, the flower has four petals, but this one has five.
　I wrote "petals", but they are not actually petals. They are "bracts". These are modified leaves.

勲章菊(ガザニア) gazania

　ガザニアの花は、春から秋にかけて思いのほか長い間咲き続けます。この時期になると、年がら年中咲いているような気がします。

　The blooming period of the gazania flower is surprisingly long, lasting from spring to autumn. Whenever I see them at this time of year, I get the feeling they are in bloom year-round.
