西洋藤袴(セイヨウフジバカマ) thoroughwort

　ヒヨドリバナ属（Eupatorium）に属するキク科の植物は、似た特徴をもつ植物が多く、私には見分けがつきません。ここでは、植物名をセイヨウフジバカマとしておきます。
　写真から受ける印象は、落ち着いていて、控えめでありながらも、深みのある趣や風格が感じられると思いませんか。

　It's hard for me to distinguish many plants in the Asteraceae family, including the genus Eupatorium, due to their similar characteristics. Here, I posted the plant under the name thoroughwort.
　The photograph leaves a calm and modest impression, but it also has a deep charm and dignity, don't you think? 

天竺牡丹(ダリア) dahlia

　ダリアの花は、前から見ても後ろから見ても、美しいと思います。
　ダリアの原産地はメキシコです。日本では天竺牡丹と命名されました。
花の姿が牡丹(tree peony)に似ているので、牡丹と呼ばれるのはわかりますが、インドを意味する天竺が付いているのは不思議です。
　調べてみると次のことが分かりました。ダリアは、18世紀にメキシコからヨーロッパのスペインに渡り、その後オランダからインドを経由して、江戸時代の日本へもたらされました。天竺牡丹という名前から、そんな歴史をたどることができました。

　Dahlia flowers are stunning when viewed from either the front or the back.
　Dahlias are native to Mexico. Tenjiku peony was the name given to it in Japan. The flower's figure resembles a tree peony, so it's understandable why it's called a peony, but it's odd that it has the word "Tenjiku" (India) added to its name.
　Following my investigation, I came across the following: Dahlias were brought from Mexico to Spain in Europe in the 18th century, and then from the Netherlands via India to Japan during the Edo period. Through the name of "Tenjiku peony," I could trace it's history. 

アンジェラ angela

　生育旺盛なアンジェラは、花が咲き乱れるツルバラですが、もう今の時期になると、まばらな状態になりました。

　Angela is a vigorously growing climbing rose that blooms prolifically, but by this time of year the flowers are sparse.

ジャルダンドゥフランス Jardeins de France

　フランスの庭という名前のついた華やかなバラです。
　先日、パリのルーブル美術館で宝飾品強盗事件が起きました。犯行時間はわずか約7分で、推定被害額8800万ユーロ（約155億円）の宝飾品を持ち去られたということです。
　アルセーヌ・ルパンの再来かと思う用意周到な手口の犯罪でした。残念なのは、アルセーヌ・ルパンのような義賊でなく、単なる盗人のようです。

　This gorgeous rose is named "French garden".
　At The Louvre Museum in Paris, there was recently a theft of jewelry. The crime took just seven minutes and involved the theft of jewelry worth an estimated 88 million euros (about $102 million). The crime was so well-planned that it looked like Arsene Lupin was returning. Unfortunately, they seem to be just thieves, not heroic outlaws like Arsene Lupin. 

ユリイカ eureka

　バラの品種は、非常に多く4万種以上存在するといわれています。原種は約100～250種と少なく、残りは園芸品種です。
　品種が多いとそれぞれを区別するため、分類項目も増えます。一例として、ユリイカの分類を以下に示します。

　It is believed that there are numerous rose varieties, with over 40,000 in total. There are only about 100 to 250 species of the original wild type, and the rest are cultivated varieties. To distinguish between many varieties, the number of classification categories also increases. Below is an example of how Eureka is classified.

スイートアフトン sweet afton

　"アメリカ"で作出されたバラですが、名前の由来はなぜか"スコットランド"の南西部を流れるのアフトン川です。
　「アフトン川の流れ」という"スコットランド"民謡は、"アメリカ"の歌曲だそうです。

　This rose got its name from the Afton River, which flows through the southwest part of "Scotland," even though it was created in America.
　The "Scottish folk" song Flow Gently Sweet Afton is said to be an "American song." 

オクラ okura

　オクラの原産地は、アフリカ北東部です。熱帯地方では、多年草なので毎年繰り返し実をつけます。一方、日本では冬が寒いので、越冬できず一年草です。
　温暖化が進めば、日本でもオクラは多年草になる可能性があります。

　オクラは花が咲いた後、実は上向きに付く特徴があります。収穫のタイミングを逃すと、下の写真のように、大きく硬くなります。茶色になっているのは、鉄分が多く含まれるので、錆ではないかと思います。

　Okra is native to northeastern Africa. In tropical regions, it is a perennial plant that produces fruit every year. On the other hand, in Japan, where winters are cold, it cannot survive the winter and is an annual plant. 
　Okra could become a perennial plant in Japan as global warming progresses.

　Okra has the unique feature that the fruit grows upward after the flowers wither. The fruit will become large and hard if you don't harvest it on time, as shown in the photo below. It's probable that the brown color is rust due to its high iron content.

犬酸漿(イヌホウズキ)の実 berries of black nightshade

　今日は時期としては、ずいぶん寒い一日でした。地球温暖化はどこへ行ってしまったのでしょう。

　三つ前の投稿で、イヌホウズキの花の写真をアップしました。そこでは、まだ実が生っていませんでした。今日は、たまたま通りがかった別の場所で、たわたに実った木を見つけました。

　For this time of year, it was quite cold today. I wonder where global warming has gone.

　I have shared a photo of black nightshade flowers in the post three posts ago. There was no fruit present yet. While passing by another place today, I came across a tree full of berries.

箒草(ホウキグサ) Mexican burningbush

　こんもり膨らんだホウキグサが、畑の縁にいくつか並んでいます。その一つが割れています。猫が飛び込んだのでしょうか。
　ホウキグサ（草）は、ホウキギ（木）とも呼ばれます。さて、この植物は草なのでしょうか、あるいは木なのでしょうか。正解は、1年草の草です。

　There are several Mexican burningbushes at the edge of the field. One of them split open. Maybe a cat jumped in?
　The Mexican burning bush is referred by the Japanese name "broom-making grass" or "broom-making tree". So, is this plant a grass or a tree? The answer is a grass that grows annually.

アカザ葛(アカザカズラ) madeira vine

　アカザカズラは、別名オカワカメとも呼ばれます。その厚味のある葉を茹でると、ぬめりが出てワカメ のような食感となります。
　この写真を撮るのに、3か所蚊に刺されました。

　Madeira vine has the alias name "land-wakame seaweed" in Japan. Boiling the thick leaves results in their becoming slimy and having a texture similar to that of wakame seaweed.
　I got three mosquito bites while taking these photos.

犬酸漿(イヌホウズキ) black nightshade

　果実ができつつあるイヌホオズキです。
　植物名につく接頭辞の"イヌ"の意味は、"役に立たない"という意味です。犬には大変失礼なことです。"異なるもの"と解釈する説明を最近見ました。犬好きには朗報です。

　The black nightshade is beginning to produce fruits.
　The Japanese name for black nightshade is "dog-round cherry." The prefix "dog" in plant names is said to mean "useless" in Japan, but I've recently come across explanations that interpret it as "something different". This is a good tendency for dog-persons. :-)

ルドベキア blackeyed Susan

　石垣と舗装の隙間からルドベキアが育っていました。

　The gaps between the stone wall and the pavement were home to blackeyed Susans' growth.

松葉菊(マツバギク)と朧月(オボロヅキ) trailing ice plant and ghost plant

　マツバギクは上にあり、朧月はその下にあります。朧月という名前にはあまり馴染みがないですが、この多肉植物を見たことがある方も多いと思います。マツバギクは多肉植物ではありませんが、その葉は多肉植物のようにふくよかな形をしています。

　The trailing ice plants are located on the top and the ghost plant is located below. The ghost plant belongs to the group of succulents. The trailing ice plant's leaves are plump and shaped like succulents, even though they are not a succulent.

彼岸花 (ヒガンバナ) red cluster lily

　今年は猛暑のためヒガンバナの開花は遅くなりましたが、そんなヒガンバナも、そろそろ見納めです。ヒガンバナは茎が長くすっきりとしたたたずまいで、ヒガンバナだけでまとまって咲きます。ここでは、ごちゃごちゃした環境で咲いています、そして蜂の巣も見えます。蜂はもう居ませんが、ギボシアシナガバチの巣だと思います。ギボシアシナガバチは、蜂の中でも攻撃性が高いので、居なくなっていてよかったです。

　The red spider lilies bloomed late this year because of the extreme heat, but they will be the last time we see them. Red cluster lilies have long stems and only  red cluster lilies bloom together in a refreshed aura. Here, they bloom in a cluttered environment,  and the beehive can be seen. There are no bees now, but I think it is a beehive of Japanese paper wasps. It makes me happy that the aggressive wasps had become extinct by then.

花虎の尾(ハナトラノオ) obedient plant

　ハナトラノオの花は、一本の長い軸に沿って、規則正しく並んで咲きます。この植物の葉の形は、ハナトラノオのようですが、花は少々バラバラな咲き方をしています。ハナトラノオと言ってしまうには、抵抗があります。

　The obedient plant flower blooms in rows that are regular rows along a single long axis. The leaves of this plant are similar to those of obedient plants. However, the blooming pattern of the flower is slightly disorganized. I feel slightly uneasy about calling it the obedient plant.

水引(ミズヒキ) junpsheed

　ミズヒキは、長い茎にピンクの小さな花を点々とつけます。花の外側はピンクですが内側は白です。風情のあるたたずまいですが、見た目によらず強い繁殖力を持っています。

　A long junpsheed stem has small pink flowers dotted on it. The flower has a pink exterior and a white interior. It has a charming appearance, but contrary to its appearance, it has a strong reproductive ability.

荒地盗人萩(アレチヌスビトハギ) panicled tick-trefoil

　とても面白い名前が付けられた植物です。荒れ地で育ち、豆果の形が盗人の足跡に似ていることから、この名前がつけられました。

　The Japanese name for this plant means "thief of rough land", which is quite intriguing. It grows in rough land and was named after the shape of its legumes, which resemble thief footprints.
