オクラの原産地は、アフリカ北東部です。熱帯地方では、多年草なので毎年繰り返し実をつけます。一方、日本では冬が寒いので、越冬できず一年草です。
温暖化が進めば、日本でもオクラは多年草になる可能性があります。
オクラは花が咲いた後、実は上向きに付く特徴があります。収穫のタイミングを逃すと、下の写真のように、大きく硬くなります。茶色になっているのは、鉄分が多く含まれるので、錆ではないかと思います。
