満開 full bloom
昨日と一昨日の雨にも関わらず、今日は満開の桜を見ることができました。

胴吹き桜 dobuki-sakura
桜の老木では、幹から直接花が咲いているのをよく見かけます。休眠していた芽が目覚めるからだそうです。これを胴吹き桜と呼びます。

桜の品種 variety of cherry tree
桜には600種類くらいあるそうです。
日本では、ソメイヨシノが一番人気のある桜ですが、すべてがクローンで増えたので、そろそろ60年の寿命を向かえる時期です。
それゆえ、絶滅の危機が心配されています。
It seems that there are about 600 kinds of cherry trees.
In Japan, a somei-yoshino is the most popular cherry tree, but all somei-yoshinos were produced as clones, so they will reach the end of life of 60 years soon.
That is why a crisis of the extinction is worried about.

花 cherry blossoms
単に花といえば、今では桜の花を指しますが、奈良時代まで遡ると、梅の花でした。ところが平安時代になると、梅から次第に桜に代わっていました。なぜ、日本人の好みが、梅から桜に代わったのでしょう。
奈良時代には、中国といえば、文化伝来の地でした。梅も中国から伝わったものです。当時の貴族が、新しい文化とともに、梅をも珍重したのでしょう。
その後、遣唐使も廃止され、日本独自の文化が熟成され、風土/精神に合う桜が見直されるようになったのでは思います。

However, in the Heian period it came to meant cherry blossom along with the increasing popularity of cherry blossoms. Why would the Japanese liking have changed from plum blossoms to cherry blossoms?
In the Nara era, China was the country which transferred culture to Japan. The plum tree was introduced from China, too. The nobles of the time would prize the plum tree highly.
Later, the Japanese envoy to China was abolished, and the Japanese original culture begun to matured. So I think that a cherry tree fitting to Japanese culture and mentality came to be reevaluated.
