桜草(サクラソウ) primrose

　サクラソウもシバザクラもどちらも桜に似た花をつけます。サクラソウの方が花びらは幅広です。

　Both primroses and mossy phloxes bloom flowers that look like cherry blossoms. I learned that petals of primrose are wider.

木瓜(ボケ) flowering quince

　雄しべが結構目立ちますね。

　I think stamens are more than a little noticeable. 

椿(ツバキ)の蕾 camellia bud

　イチゴのようです。食べたら美味しいかも。

　It looks like a strawberry and I suppose it would be delicious.

片栗(カタクリ)の実 fruit of dogtooth violet

　今年はカタクリを見ていないことに気づき、見に行きました。そこに、カタクリはもう一輪も咲いていませんでした。

　カタクリの実は熟すと果皮が弾けるので、種が飛び散ります。

　種には柔らかいアリが好む付着物が付いています。アリが種を巣に持ち帰り付着物のみ食べ、種は巣の近くに捨てられます。結果、種はアリによって離れたあちこちに、撒き散らされることになります。

　種を取り出し、舐めてみましたが、微量のためか無味無臭でした。

　群落周辺の木々の伐採が始まっていました。来年以降は、カタクリを見ることができるか気がかりです。

　I noticed that I don't see any dogtooth violets this year and went to see them. No more dogtooth violet was blooming there.

　When the dogtooth violet fruits are ripe, the peels pop and the seeds scatter. 

　Seeds have soft adhering substance of which ants prefer. Ants bring the seeds back to the nest and eat only the adhering substances, and the seeds are thrown away near the nest. As a result, the seeds will be scattered in remote areas by ants.

　I took out the seeds and licked them, but they were tasteless and odorless, probably because of the minute quantity.

　Logging operation has begun around the community, so I'm worried about if we can see dogtooth violets after the next year.

八手(ヤツデ) Japanese Aralia

　葉も果実もよく目立つ植物です。熱帯雨林気候帯の植物かと思いましたが、日本原産の植物でした。

　It is a plant whose leaves and fruits stand out well. I thought it originally grew  in the tropical forest, but it is native to Japan. 

里桜(サトザクラ) satozakura

　サトザクラは、オオシマザクラに由来する多数の園芸品種の総称です。手前が紅色のサトザクラの蕾、背景がオオシマザクラです。

　The cultivated varieties based on "Ooshimazakura" are collectively called "Satozakura." The branches with red buds in the foreground are "Satozakura", and the tree in the background is "Oshimazakura."

椿 Camellia japonica

　厚みと艶のある葉も、花と同様に存在感があります。

　The thick, glossy leaves have the same presence as the flowers.
