カンナ Canna

　そろそろカンナの花が咲き始める時期ですが、葉だけでも十分な存在感があります。

　It is about time that the flowers of the Canna start to bloom, but the leaves alone have a nice presence.

紫御殿(ムラサキゴテン) purple heart plant

　ムラサキゴテンは、葉が緑色でなく紫色をした普通とは異なる植物です。メキシコ地方原産のツユクサの仲間で有毒です。

　Purple heart (plant) is an unusual plant which leaves are purple instead of green. It is a member of the Commelina genus native to the Mexican region and is toxic.

サルビア Salvia

　サルビアには色々な種類があります。多分これは、サルビア　ファリナセア　ストラータだと思います。

　There are many Salvia species. I think this is probably Salvia farinacea strata.

夏白菊 (ナツシロギク) feverfew

　ナツシロギクは薬草として、解熱、頭痛などに効く薬として用いられてきました。ところが、これらの薬効の根拠が科学的に支持されておらず、偽薬効果とも言われることがあります。

　信ずるものは救われる。

　Feverfew has been used as a herbal medicine for treating fevers, headaches and others. However, the basis of these medicinal effects has not been scientifically documented and is sometimes regarded as a placebo effect.

　Believers will be saved.

百日草(ヒャクニチソウ) Common zinia

　どの花も、泥はねで汚れていましたが、ましなのを選んで撮影しました。

　英名では、youth-and-old-ageとも呼ばれますが、なぜその名前がついたのか気になるところです。ある説を聞いたことがあるのですが、納得できる内容ではありませんでした。

　Most of the flowers were dirty with splashes of mud, but I chose the best one and took a picture of it.

　In English, it is also called youth-and-old-age, but I am wondering why it was given that name. I heard a theory, but it was unconvincing.

下野(シモツケ) Japanese Spiraea

　シモツケ（木）とシモツケソウ（草）の花はよく似ています。シモツケには、幹があるのと葉の形が先の尖った卵型であることが、シモツケソウとの違いです。

　The flowers of the Japanese Spiraea（tree）and the Meadowsweet（grass）are very similar. Japanese Spiraea has a trunk and leaves are oval with a pointed tip, which is the difference from Meadowsweet.

家守(ヤモリ) gecko

　今年も日没後にガラス窓の外にヤモリが現れるようになりました。生息個体数が減ってきて、千葉県他ではヤモリを準絶滅危惧種に指定しています。我が家に住み着いたヤモリは、元気に生き延びていたので一安心です。

　ヤモリは肉食です。まだ、我や蚊などを見かけませんので、蜘蛛でも食べているのでしょうか。

　Also this year, geckos began to appear outside the glass windows after sunset. The gecko population is declining, so Chiba Prefecture (east of Tokyo and faces the Pacific Ocean) and others have designated geckos as a near-threatened species. I am relieved to know that the geckos that took up residence in my house have survived. 

　Geckos are carnivorous. I haven't seen any moths or mosquitoes yet, so maybe they eat spiders instead.
