箱根卯木(ハコネウツギ) weigela coraeensis

　ハコネウツギはわが国の固有種です。花の色は、白、ピンク、赤の3つが同じ木に咲いています。ところが実際は、はじめに白色で咲きますが、白がやがてピンクになり、ピンクがその後紅色に変わるという変わった花です。

　Weigela coraeensis is endemic to Japan. The flowers come in three different colors - white, pink, and red - and they all bloom on the same tree. In truth, it is a unique flower that first blooms white, but the white afterward turns pink, and then the pink changes to crimson.

立葵(タチアオイ) hollyhock

　ぐっと近づけば、心の中に探検の世界が広がってきます。滑らないように気をつけねばとか、ここを超えるにはザイルが必要だとか。

　If you get more and more closer, a world of exploration opens up in your mind. Things like, I have to be careful not to slip, and I need a zail to get through this area.

亜米利加風露(アメリカフウロ) carolina geranium

　野草にまぎれてあちこちで、アメリカフウロの葉が、赤く色づいています。この片隅は、特にきれいな色になっていました。

　Here and there amid the wild grass, the leaves of the Caroline geranium are turning red. This small area was a particularly beautiful color.

赤芽柏(アカメガシワ) Japanese Mallotus

　新芽は、鮮やかな赤色をしており、ひときわ目を引きます。この色は、葉の表面に密生する毛の色です。意外にも、葉の表面は緑色です。赤い毛には、紫外線から新芽を守る役割があります。

　The new shoots are a vivid red that really catches your attention. This color is the color of the dense hairs on the leaves surface. Unexpectedly, the surface of the leaves is green. The red hairs play a role in shielding new shoots from ultraviolet rays.

接骨木(ニワトコ) elderberry

　葉の形（奇数羽状複葉）からこの木は、サワグルミだと思っていました。ところが淡黄白色の細かな花が群がるように咲いたので、ニワトコであることが分かりました。こんな見上げるようなニワトコを見るのは初めてです。６ｍ位にまでなるそうです。

　I have thought this tree was a Japanese wingnut because of the leaf shape is odd-pinnate compound leaves. However, the small light yellowish white flowers bloom in cluster and I realized it is elderberry. This is the first time I have ever looked up such a tall elderberry. Apparently it can grow to about 6m.

狐薊(キツネアザミ) Hemisteptia lyrata / false thistle

　花がアザミに似ていますが、アザミではないことから、キツネアザミの名がついたようです。植物学者の牧野富太郎博士曰く、「アザミに似るがよく見るとそうでなくて狐に騙されたように感じる」
　随分昔のことですが、私は牧野記念庭園の直ぐそばに住んでいたので、記念庭園には時々見学に行きました。現在はどうなっているのか知りませんが、草むらのような庭だったのを覚えています。

　Foxes are said to be deceiving people in Japan.
　Although this flower resembles a thistle, it is not actually a thistle, which is why in Japanese it is called a fox disguising as a thistle. Botanist Dr. Makino Tomitaro wrote, "It looks like a thistle, but on closer inspection, it's not, and I feel like I've been tricked by a fox."
　A long time ago, I lived very close to the Makino Memorial Garden, and I visited there occasionally. I am not sure what it looks like currently, but I recall it was an area covered in overgrown grass.

雄藪虱 (オヤブジラミ) Torilis scabra

　花は小さく直径2mmに満たない大きさです。花は白色で、縁は淡い赤味を帯びています。赤い毛の生えたものは、蕾ではなく果実です。小さく見逃しやすい植物ですが、草むらのあちらこちらで元気に育っています。

　The flowers are small, less than 2mm in diameter. The white flowers have a pale reddish edge. The red hairy things are fruit, not buds. It's a small plant that's not easily noticed, but it's thriving here and there in the grassy bush.
