ススキ Japanese silver grass

ススキは、古くは屋根の材料にしたり、最近でもお月見のお供えにしたりと、日本人の生活に関わりが深い植物です。しかし、北米ではススキが侵略的外来種に分類されていると聞きました。

Japanese silver grass was used as material of roof in the old days and is used even now as an offering of the viewing the moon in autumn, so it is a familiar plant for a Japanese.
However, I heard that Japanese silver grass has been classified into an invasive alien species in North America.

ホオズキ Chinese lantern plant

草むらを歩いていると、突然ホオズキが。なんでこんな所に生えているのでしょう。

Chinese lantern plant appeared suddenly when I was rambling on grass. I wondered why this plant grew in such a place.

田んぼとヒガンバナ rice paddy and cluster amaryllises

田んぼのふちにヒガンバナが少し咲いていました。
昔の人は、ネズミやモグラから稲を守るため、畦に有毒なヒガンバナを植えました。その名残と思われます。
最近は、ネズミやモグラよりイノシシの被害が著しくなり、イノシシよけの電気牧柵を見かけることが多くなりました。

Some cluster-amaryllises bloomed in the edge of the rice field.
The old person planted a toxic cluster-amaryllis in the edge of the rice field to protect rice from a mouse and a mole. It seems to be the trace of the old custom.
The damage of the wild boar became more terrible than mouse and mole and came to often see the electric fence which prevents the invasion of the wild boar recently.

ミズヒキソウ Persicaria filiformis

沢山の手足を使って、這い上がっていくように見えます。

With many hands and feet, it seems to crawl up.

オクラ okra

去年は庭で育てましたが、日本では越冬できません。
果実は美味しいおかずになるので、来年は育てようと思います。

I cultivated okra last year in my garden, but it cannot pass the winter in Japan.
I will bring it up next year because the fruit is good for accompanying dish.

アオツヅラフジ cocculus trilobus

花は今ひとつですが、果実には雰囲気があります。

The flower is not good enough, but the appearance of the fruit has a good atmosphere.

仙人草のヒゲ barbs of sweet-autumn-clematis

実から放射状に伸びるヒゲが、回転体を思わせる曲線を描いています。

Each barb growing from a fruit radially draws a curve which suggests a  rotation.
