牡丹臭木(ボタンクサギ) Rose glory bower

　雄しべが突き出る花の形は、クサギによく似ていますが、ボタンクサギは小花が集まっておまんじゅう形に咲きます。

 　The shape of the flower with its stamens protruding is very similar to that of Harlequin glory bower, but the Rose glory bower is a collection of flowers that bloom in the form of steamed buns.

金魚草(キンギョソウ) snapdragon

　キンギョソウは、和名では金魚に、英名では竜に見立てて名前が付けられています。物を、何になぞらえるかは、人や文化で異なるので興味深いです。

　Snapdragon is named after a dragon in English, but a goldfish in Japanese. The analogy is interesting because it varies by individual and cultural background.

スモークツリー smoke tree

　スモークツリーの雌株に、大きな花が咲いています。それらは捕らえ所なく、ふわふわしています。

　The female strain of smoke tree blooms large flowers. These are fluffy and vague.

庭石菖(ニワゼキショウ) Eastern bllue-eyed grass

　この植物の学名は、Sisyrinchiumです。ギリシャ語で豚を意味する「sys」と、鼻を意味する「rhynchos」が語源です。牧草地に生えたニワゼキショウを、豚が鼻で掘り返してしまうことからつけられた名前です。何とも、率直な名前です。

　The scientific name for this plant is "Sisyrinchium." "Sys" means pig, and "rhynchos" means nose in Greek. The scientific name is named for the following reasons. Because pigs use their noses to dig up this pasture-grown plant. What a frank name!

捩花(ネジバナ) ladies' tresses

　ネジバナはラン科の花ですが、言われなければラン科とは気が付きません。

　ネジバナの巻き方には、右巻きと左巻きの両方があります。不思議だなあと思ったら、人間のつむじの巻き方にも左右あり、両方持つ人もいることに気が付きました。

　The ladies' tresses is a flower of the Orchidaceae, but if someone don't say it, I won't notice it. 

　It have two ways to spiral, right-handed and left-handed. When I thought it was strange, I noticed that humans also have two ways of wind hair whorl, and some people have both.

白蝶草(ハクチョウソウ) Gaura

　長い雄しべがよく目立つハクチョウソウです。

　ハクチョウソウの英名はガウラです。このガウラという名前から、怪獣を連想しますが、これはガメラという名前の怪獣映画があったからだと思います。

　It is a white gaura with long stamens that stand out.

　I feel a monster from the pronunciation of Gaura, probably because there was a Japanese monster movie named Gamera.

ゴシキドクダミ fish mint(chameleon plant)

　普通ドクダミの葉は濃い緑色ですが、緑以外の斑が入ったものを見かけるようになりました。また、同様に八重咲きのものも見かけます。

　The leaves of fish mint are usually dark green, but in recent years I see them having spots of colors other than green. Double-flowered flowers can be seen as well.
