家守(ヤモリ) gecko

　今年も日没後にガラス窓の外にヤモリが現れるようになりました。生息個体数が減ってきて、千葉県他ではヤモリを準絶滅危惧種に指定しています。我が家に住み着いたヤモリは、元気に生き延びていたので一安心です。

　ヤモリは肉食です。まだ、我や蚊などを見かけませんので、蜘蛛でも食べているのでしょうか。

　Also this year, geckos began to appear outside the glass windows after sunset. The gecko population is declining, so Chiba Prefecture (east of Tokyo and faces the Pacific Ocean) and others have designated geckos as a near-threatened species. I am relieved to know that the geckos that took up residence in my house have survived. 

　Geckos are carnivorous. I haven't seen any moths or mosquitoes yet, so maybe they eat spiders instead. 

ドクダミ fish mint

　廃屋の庭に、八重のドクダミが群生していました。一つ持ち帰り、一輪挿しにしました。

　In the garden of an abandoned house, there was a cluster of double-flowered fish mints. I took one home and put it in a single-flower vase.

一升瓶 1 sho bottle

　日本酒が一升瓶で売られるようになったのは、1900年の初頭からです。最近は、日本酒の容器は、紙の箱や四合瓶や300ml瓶へ代わりつつあります。

　この日本酒を飲むのは初めてです。冷蔵庫から取り出してしばらくすると、瓶の表面に結露した水滴が、ラベルの紙に染み込んでいきました。ラベルの白い背景が次第に淡い水色の変わっていきました。そのように作られたラベルではありませんが、色が変わるのを眺めつつ、日本酒を楽しみました。

　Sake began to be sold in 1.8-liter glass bottles in the early 1900s. These days, sake containers are being replaced by paper boxes, 720ml or  300ml bottles.

　It is my first time to drink this sake. After taking the 1 sho bottle out of the refrigerator for a while, the water droplets that formed on the surface of the bottle were soaking into the label paper. The white background of the label gradually changed to pale blue. It's not a label made for this purpose, but I enjoyed sake while watching the color shift.

立葵(タチアオイ) hollyhock

　穂のような形で咲く花は、だいたい下から上に咲いていきます。タチアオイの一番上の花が咲くと、梅雨が明けると言われています。

　Flowers that bloom as spikes generally bloom from the bottom to the top. It is said that the rainy season ends in Japan when the topmost flower of the hollyhock blooms.

箒草(ホウキグサ) Mexican Fireweed

　姿は箒というよりマリモのようです。ホウキグサを、逆さに吊るして乾燥させれば、箒を作ることができるそうです。秋に赤く紅葉したホウキグサも美しいです。

　とんぶりとして知られる食品は、ホウキグサの熟した実を加工したものです。

　It looks more like a spherical moss than a broom. If you hang Mexican Fireweeds upside down and dry it, you can make a broom.

　The food known as field caviar is the processed ripe fruit of Mexican Fireweed.

　The Japanese name of Mexican fireweed means broom-grass.

アメリカオニアザミ bull thistle

　アザミにも色々な種類がありますが、これは茎の先にいくつかの花をつけているので、アメリカオニアザミだと思います。

　アザミはスコットランドの国花です。アザミのトゲのおかげでバイキングの侵攻を防ぐことができたと聞きました。確かにアザミの棘には痛くて難儀しますが、バイキングがそれほど軟弱な民族ではなかったと思います。

　There are various kinds of thistles, but I think this one is bull thistle because it has several flowers on the tip of the stem. 

　Thistle is the national blossom of Scotland. I heard the thistle thorns kept the Vikings from invading Scotland. I understood the thistle thorns are painful and difficult to deal with, but I don't believe the Vikings were so gutless.

酔仙翁(スイセンノウ) rose campion

　葉や茎が、白い毛が生えたフェルトのような質感であること、それと対比して、花が赤紫色なのがとても印象的です。

　The leaves and stems have a felt-like texture with white hairs, and in contrast, the reddish-violet flowers are very impressive.
