這松(ハイマツ) Siberian dwarf pine

　強風にさらされる枝が、名前の通り地を這うように伸びています。遠くに見るその姿に厳しさを感じますが、近くに寄って新葉(わかば)を見ると、また別の穏やかな表情を見せてくれます。

　Branches exposed to strong winds stretch to crawl on the ground. When you see it from a distance, you can feel its severe appearance, however, when you get closer and look at the young leaves, you can see another peaceful expression.

苔桃(コケモモ) cowberry

　あちらこちらの岩陰に、自生して群落を作っていました。コケモモは草に見えますが実は木です。

　木と草の違いは、大きい小さいに関係なく、地上部が何年も生き延びるのが木です。

　Cowberries were growing wild and forming colonies behind rocks here and there. It looks like grass, but it is actually a tree.

　The difference between trees and grasses is that, regardless of the size of the plant, the trees have the above-ground part lives for many years. 

落し文 (オトシブミ) dropped love letter

　この昆虫は、オトシブミ科のヒゲナガオトシブミだと思います。ヒゲナガオトシブミは、葉に切れこみを入れ、折りたたみそこへ卵を産んで、地面に落とします。この葉の包を落とし文となぞらえて、昆虫にこの名前が付けられました。

　昔の人は、思いを寄せる人が通りそうな場所に、恋文をそっと置いておくことがあったそうです。その恋文を落し文といいます。なんとも奥ゆかしい名前が付けられた昆虫ですね。

　ところで、この昆虫を見つけた場所は、富士山の側火山の宝永山山頂2693ｍです。森林限界を超えたこんな場所で、生息できるのか不思議に思いました。

　I think that this insect is 'Paratrachelophorus longicornis' in 'Attelabidae' family. The Japanese name is "Otoshi-bumi, which means love letter dropped in the road."

　The insect makes incisions in a leaf, folds it up, lays a egg there, and drops it to the ground. It is named after the folded leaf containing the egg, which is likened to a love letter.

　It is said that in the past, people would sometimes place a love letter in a place where someone they had feelings for might pass by. What a modest named insect!

　By the way, the place where I found this insect is 2693m on the summit of Mt. Hoei, a side volcano of Mt. Fuji. I wonder if they could live there beyond the forest line.

ヒッチハイカー hitchhiker

　でかけた先で気がつくと、車のドアノブの裏に、ニホンアマガエルが隠れていました。おやおや、こんなところに張り付いて、何処へ行こうとしているのですか。

　草むらへ逃してやろうと誘導するのですが、なかなかこの場を離れません。挙句の果て、車の下に隠れてしまったので、二人がかりで救出しました。

　When I went out, I found a Japanese tree frog hiding behind the doorknob of my car. Well well well, where are you trying to go, stuck in such a place?

　I tried to guide it to escape into the grass, but it won't leave the car. At the end, it moved under the car and hid, so it took two people to rescue it.

褄黒豹紋(ツマグロヒョウモン) Indian Fritillary

　そんな廃材に止まっても蜜は吸えませんよ。ただ、休んでいるだけかもしれませんね。

　Even if you perch on a such piece of scrap lumber, you can't suck nectar. But you may be just resting for a while.

南天 (ナンテン) nandina

　ナンテンには、せきを鎮める作用があることが、よく知られています。子供の頃冬になると、ナンテンのエキスが入った飴を、母によく買ってもらった記憶があります。

　Nandina is is well known for having an anti-cough effect. I remember when I was a child, in the winter, my mother used to buy me sweets with the plant extract.

白熊の木(ハグマノキ、スモークツリー） smoke tree

　スモークツリーは、和名のように白熊のようにも見えます。

　The smoke tree also looks like a polar bear. Its Japanese name "白熊の木,Shirokuma-no-ki" means polar bear tree.
