猩猩草(ショウジョウソウ) fire-on-the-mountain

　花の周りを取り囲む朱色の葉（包葉）が、花より目立ちます。よく見ると、朱色の葉は独立したものではなく、緑の葉の基部が朱色であることが分かります。

大郭公薊(オオカッコウアザミ) floss flower

　薄暗い日陰でオオカッコウアザミが咲いていました。本来、この花は日当たりの良いところを好みます。ある文化圏では薬草として使われることもあるようですが、有毒で肝臓障害を起こすとも言われています。
　それはともかく、紫色をした垂れ下がる細長い花弁が印象的です。

　センニンソウは、さわやかな甘い香りがするのですが、あいにく私は数か月前に嗅覚を失ってしまったので、香りを楽しむことができません。回復するにはしばらく時間がかかりそうです。

　余談ですが、今は、日本酒を飲んでもちっとも美味しくありません。味覚と嗅覚は、切っても切れない絡み合った関係のようです。

ゴーヤ bitter melon

　来年はゴーヤを種から育ててみようと、緑色の果実から種を取り出しました。どれも水に浮かぶものばかりで、乾燥させてから指で押すと簡単に潰れてしまいます。これは利用できそうにありません。
　という経緯で、橙色まで熟した果実の中から、赤いゼリー状の物質に覆われた種を取り出しました。これは、固くて中が詰まっているようで、発芽が期待できそうです。
　一番のリスクは、種を撒くのを忘れることです。

向日葵(ヒマワリ) sunflower

　ヒマワリが畑と道路の境界に一列だけ植えられていました。土壌改良や肥料にする目的ならもっと大規模に植えると思います。通行人への饗しとも思えません。まあ、そんなことはともかく、青い空とヒマワリの対比を楽しみました。

　そういえば、畑の畦道に沿って、彼岸花が植えられている光景を思い出しました。彼岸花は毒草ですので、そのことを利用して、ネズミやモグラから作物を守るためだそうです。
　ついでに桜の話題をもうひとつ。川沿いの土手に桜が植えられているのは、多くの人が花見に訪れて、土手を踏み固めるので、水害の防止になるそうです。江戸時代のお話です。

　Only one row of sunflowers was planted on the border between the fields and the road. 　In addition, one more topic on cherry blossoms. The cherry trees are planted on the riverbanks because many people come to see the cherry blossoms and trample the banks, which helps prevent flooding. This was flood control knowledge on the Edo period.

洋種山牛蒡(ヨウシュヤマゴボウ) pokeweed

　ヨウシュヤマゴボウの花軸は濃い赤紫色をしており、薄暗い中で光を浴びて輝いていると、とても美しいです。難点は致死性の有毒物質を含むことです。山菜の山ごぼうとは、全く異なる植物です。
　熟した黒く柔らかい実を潰すと、赤紫色の果汁が出てきます。この汁は強力な染料として使えます。その昔、安価なワインの着色にも使われたことがあるそうです。怖い話です。
