シャガ Iris japonica

　シャガは、種子を作りません。地下茎が伸びて増えていきます。ソメイヨシノと同様にクローンです。動物のクローンは希少ですが、植物には以外に多くクローンが存在します。例えば、ヒガンバナやニホンズイセンも、分球で増えるクローンです。

　Iris japonica does not produce seeds. The underground stems extend and multiply. It is a clone, just like Somei Yoshino (cherry blossoms). Animal cloning is rare, but contrary to expectation, plant cloning is common. For example, red spider lilies and Japanese daffodils, or Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis, are clones that reproduce through the dividing bulb.

屋根方 pilot on the roof

　山車の屋根に乗る人は、巡行の際に電線や電柱、看板などを避けるため重要な役割を担っています。電線など抱えあげたりする姿を見ることもあり、大丈夫なのかと心配になります。
　どうやって屋根に登り降りするのかずっと疑問でしたが、屋根に出入り口があるのを見つけ、納得できました。

　The float's roof riders play a crucial role in avoiding overhead cables, utility poles, signs, and other obstacles during the parade. Occasionally, seeing them hold up wires causes me to worry about whether they are okay.
　I had been questioning how they got onto or off the roof, but I came across an entrance on the roof and it all made sense.

クサノオウ celandine

　クサノオウは、ケシ科の植物です。昔、アヘンの代用品として用いられたこともあるそうです。毒草ですのでむやみに、触ったり潰したりしてはいけません。

　Celandine is a plant of the Papaveraceae family. They say it was once used as a substitute for opium. It is a poisonous plant, so you should not touch or crush it carelessly.

時空を超えて beyond Time and Space

　墓石一式が、空き地にポツンとあります。
　中央奥の墓石に着目すると、上部は歴史を感じる重厚な作りですが、下部は埴輪の顔にも似て滑稽さも感じる簡素な作りです。それらは、作られた時代も作風も異ります。
　手前に置かれた香炉と花たては、現代の墓石の前に置かれる物で、古い中央の墓石と左右の仏像とは調和するものではありません。
　なぜこのような組み合わせになっているのでしょうか。時代を超えて信仰が続いているからかなと考えました。

　There is a set of gravestones that are all alone on a vacant land.
　If you look at the gravestone in the back center, the upper part is Imposing and historic, while the lower part is simple and also humorous, resembling the face of a haniwa clay figurine. They were made in different eras and art styles.
　The incense burner and flower stand placed in the foreground are designed to be placed in front of a modern gravestone, and do not harmonize with the old central gravestone and the Buddha statues on either side.
　What is the reason for the mixture being like this? I think maybe this is because the faith has continued throughout the era.

君子蘭(クンシラン) fire lily

　クンシランの花持ちは悪い方ではありません。そのうちに写真に撮ろうと思っていたら、花の元気がなくなってきました。
　花の名前にランがついていますが、ヒガンバナ科の花です。

　Fire Lily flowers retain their quality relatively long. I was thinking of taking a picture of the flowers soon, but they were beginning to wilt.
　Although the flower has the name orchid in Japanese, it is actually a member of the Amaryllidaceae family.

蔓日々草(ツルニチニチソウ) bigleaf periwinkle

　花の蜜は甘いそうですが、全草にアルカノイド系の毒を含みます。あちこちの花壇でニチニチソウを見かけますが、決して密を吸ってはいけません。私は子供の頃に、ツツジの花を摘み取って、根本を吸った記憶があります。ツツジも毒を含む種類があるそうです。

　Although the flowers' nectar of bigleaf periwinkle is said to be sweet, the entire plant has alkaloid-type poisons. You can see the the flower in flower beds here and there, but you should never inhale their nectar. I remember as a child plucking an azalea flower and sucking its root. It seems that some types of azaleas are poisonous.

常磐屈曲花(トキワマガリバナ) evergreen candytuft

　花は、レース模様のように見えます。和名に屈曲という言葉が含まれています。この名前の由来は、花茎が太陽を向いて曲がる傾向があるからと言われています。

　The flowers have the appearance of a lace pattern. Part of the Japanese name for this flower has the meaning of "bending flower." They say that the name comes from the fact that the flower stalk tends to bend towards the sun.
