とどめ final blow

　以前に、木の幹の中からチェーンが出ているのを見たことがあります。ここでは、フェンスに食い込んだ幹が、切り取られて残されています。そのまま放置しているのは、木が腐ればフェンスを傷つけずに、それを取り除くことができるからなのかもしれません。
　その下の切り株に目を移せば、幹の中央から隆起した部分があることに気がつきます。幹が、再度成長し始めたのかと思い、近寄って確かめました。何と、ダボ（棒状の小片）が打ち込まれているのでした。なんでこんなことが？　根拠のない想像になりますが、切り株が息を吹き返さないよう、穴を開けて除草剤を注入し、とどめを刺したと思われます。
　ドラキュラにとどめを刺す、凄惨な場面を思い出し重い気分になりました。

　In the past, I've seen chains sticking out from inside tree trunks. Here, the trunk that had put the fence inside has been cut away and left behind. Perhaps the reason they left it there is that once the wood rots, it can be removed without causing any damage to the fence.
　If you look at the stump below, you'll notice a raised part in the center of the trunk. I was curious if the trunk had begun to grow again, so I got closer to check it.
It's amazing that a dowel (a small rod-shaped piece) had been driven into it. Why is this done? This is just speculation, but I think they probably put an end to the stump, by drilling holes and injecting herbicide to prevent it from reviving.
　I felt a heavy heart as I remembered the gruesome scene where Dracula was given a final blow.

豚菜(ブタナ) calsear

　花はタンポポに似ていますが、首がろくろ首のように長い植物で、ブタナと呼ばれます。タンポポが咲き終わる頃に、ブタナは咲き始めます。ブタナは、外来生物法で要注意外来生物に指定されています。

　Despite resembling a dandelion, the flower is called a calsear and has an unusually long neck, like a "rokuro-kubi". In Japanese folklore, there is a female monster with an abnormally long neck called "rokuro-kubi."
　Around the time dandelions finish blooming, the calsears start to bloom. The Alien Species Act has made this plant a hazardous alien species.

姫裏波蛇目(ヒメウラナミジャノメ) Ypthima argus

　この蝶は、後翅の眼状紋の数が表面が3個で裏面が5個なので、ヒメウラナミジャノメだと思います。
　蜜を吸いながら、翅をゆっくり閉じたり開いたりするのは何ででしょう。体温調節をしていると聞きましたが、そうではないような気がします。

　The butterfly has 3 eye spots on the upper side of the hind-wing and 5 eye spots on the underside, so I think it may be a Ypthima argus.
　What is the reason for the butterfly's slow opening and closing of their wings while sucking nectar? I've heard that it helps regulate body temperature, but I am unsure.

庭石菖(ニワゼキショウ) Sisyrinchium rosulatum

　ニワゼキショウは、北アメリカ原産のアヤメ科の多年草です。野生化しているので、草むらでよく見かけます。花は直径5mm程度と小さいので、見逃しがちです。花の色は、白と赤紫があり、一緒に咲いていることが多いです。

　Sisyrinchium rosulatum is a perennial plant of the Iridaceae family native to North America. It is a common sight in grassy areas because it has become naturalized. The flowers are easily missed because they are small, measuring around 5mm in diameter. The flowers are white and reddish purple and often bloom together.

クレマチス Clematis

　クレマチスとテッセンの花はよく似ています。分類学では、テッセンはクレマチスの一種ですから、テッセンをクレマチスと呼んでも誤りでないと思います。でも、その逆は正しくないですね。
　写真はクレマチスです。名前はともかくとして、花を楽しみましょう。

　The flowers of Clematis and Tessen are very similar. Taxonomically, Tessen is a member of the clematis group, so I think it can be referred to as clematis. However, the opposite is not accurate.
　The photo shows clematis. Regardless of the name, let's enjoy the flowers.

浅葱斑(アサギマダラ) chestnut tiger

　出掛けに、アサギマダラが草むらで、へたへたになっているのに気が付きました。私には、どうすることもできませんでした。

　I noticed a Chestnut tiger butterfly that was worn out in the weeds while I was leaving my house. I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do.

フリージア Freesia

　フリージアは私にとって、ちょっと縁の薄い植物です。なぜかわかりませんが、あまり身近で咲いたり、あるいは流通する花ではなかったからかも知れません。

　Freesia is a plant that I have a tenuous relationship with. I'm not sure why, but it could be because this flower is not often sold or bloomed in my neighborhood.
