　花びらが2段になっているように見えますが、外側のは萼片で、内側の筒状の部分が花弁です。

　The petals appear to be in two stages, but the outer part is the sepal and the inner tubular part is the petal.

タラの芽 sprouts of cod

　毎年、庭で収穫したタラの芽を美味しく食べています。詳しい人から、この木は接ぎ木ですといわれましたが、スパーで売られているタラの芽より、風味と歯ごたえがよく美味しいです。

　Every year, I enjoy eating the sprouts of cod harvested in my garden. A person with much knowledge about the tree said that this tree is a grafted cod tree. However, I feel that it has a better flavor and texture than the stuff sold in a supermarket.

波打つ草 waving grass

　天気の日には、二種類の草はどちらも直立しています。雨が降ると、一方は頑張ることもなく倒れ込み、晴れて暫くすれば元通りに戻ります。他方はいつも直立のままです。

　前者は、刈払機の歯を、しなってよけるので、草刈りに苦労します。

　On sunny days, both grasses are upright. When it rains, one of them falls down without resistance, and it rises up again after a while when it clears up. The other always remains upright.

　The former could elude the teeth of a grass trimmer by bowing, so it's troublesome to mow.

ブラシの木 bottlebrush

　小さな塊が次第に膨張してくると、それは赤い糸が、しっかり巻き付いているものだと分かります。さらに、糸がほどけ真っ直ぐに伸びると、それは、赤色の長い雄しべだと分かります。その雄しべの集合が、あたかもブラシの形になります。

　絡んだ糸が自然に解けていく場景を、植物に見るのは神秘的です。

　As the small lump gradually expands, you can see that it is a tightly wound red thread. Further, when the thread unravels and straightens out, it turns out to be a long red stamen. And a set of stamens looks like a bottle brush.

　It is mystical to see in plants the scene where wound threads naturally unravel.

虫取り撫子(ムシトリナデシコ) Sweet William Catchfly

　白色のムシトリナデシコもあるそうですが、見たことはありません。

　I heard that there is also a white Sweet William Catchfly, but I have never seen it.

飛燕草(ヒエンソウ) Larkspur

　ヒエンソウとデルフィニウムは、よく似た花を咲かせます。葉が、細くてモシャモシャしている方が、ヒエンソウといわれています。

　和名はツバメに、英名はヒバリにと、どちらも鳥に由来しています。

　Larkspur and Delphiniums have similar flowers. The one with thin and bushy leaves is called Larkspur. 

　Both Japanese and English names of this grasses are derived from birds. The Japanese name is swallow, the English name is lark.

銭葵(ゼニアオイ) common mallow

　ゼニアオイは、ヨーロッパ南部から日本に持ち込まれた帰化植物です。

　帰化植物とは、人為的に外国から持ち込まれた外来植物のうち、人間の保護を受けることなく、自力で増殖し生育するようになったもののことです。

　侵略的外来種という言葉がありますが、侵略的帰化種という表現は使われません。同様に、特定外来生物を特定帰化生物と呼ぶこともありません。帰化種を外来種と言っても包含関係から誤りでありませんし、何より帰化を認めたくないので、当然といえば当然ですね。

　ゼニアオイは、侵略的でも特定(被害を及ぼすもの)でもありません。

　Common mallow is a naturalized plant brought to Japan from southern Europe.

　A naturalized plant is a alien plant that has been artificially brought from a foreign country and has developed without human protection.

　There is the term "invasive alien species", but the term "invasive naturalized species" is not used in Japanese. Similarly, we do not use a term "specific naturalized species".  Calling a naturalized species an alien species is not a mistake because of the inclusive relation, and above all, we do not want to allow naturalization, so it is only natural.

　Common mallows are neither invasive nor specific (damaging).
