本来、雛人形は一式の人形を段状に飾るものですが、江戸時代のころからつるし雛が作られるようになりました。段飾りは高価なため、一般の家庭では、家族や近所の人たちで、小さな人形を作り持ち寄って、それをつるし、生まれてきた女児の幸せを願いました。これがつるし雛の起源と聞きます。

Intrinsically, the doll is displayed on tiers, but the common people have begun to hang small dolls with a string in the Edo era. A set of the dolls displayed on tiers is expensive. So, at ordinary homes, family and neighbors made small dolls together and string them and prayed for the happiness of a born girl. I heard this is the origin of the hanging dolls.
