梅は枝を切らないと、枝がはびこりますが、桜の枝をむやみに切ると枯れるからです。
The proverb says, "the fools who cut cherry trees, the fools who don't cut Japanese plum trees."
The reason is that as for the plum, branches grow wild if it is not trimmed. On the other hand, excessive trimming kills cherry trees.
