浜木綿(ハマユウ) grand crinum lily

　ハマユウとヒガンバナの花は似ていると思いませんか。それもそのはず、どちらもヒガンバナ科の植物です。両者は共に有毒植物です。花は夜に満開になることが多いそうです。

　Don't you think that the flowers of the grand crinum lily and the red spider lily look alike? This is because they are both members of the Amaryllidaceae family. Both plants are toxic. According to people, it's not uncommon for this flower to bloom at night. 

遠泳 long distance swimming

　高校生の集団が、伴走する小舟に見守られながら、隊列を組んで遠泳をする風景は、まさに夏の風物詩です。

　The sight of a group of high school students swimming long distances in formation, watched over by small boats accompanying them, is a typical summer tradition.

芙蓉(フヨウ) cotton rosemallow

　この花は、そろそろ終わりに近づいています。受粉も完了し、内部では果実への成長が始まっていることでしょう。

　This flower is getting close to the end of its lifespan. It appears that the fruit growth inside has already started since the pollination process is over. 

麒麟菊(キリンギク) dense blazing star

　キリンギクの切り花は日持ちするので、仏花として利用されるそうです。

　The cut flowers of "dense blazing star" are relatively long-lasting, so I heard they are sometimes used as offerings at Buddhist ceremonies.

姫檜扇水仙(ヒメヒオウギズイセン) crocosmia

　ヒメヒオウギズイセンは南アフリカ原産ですが、寒さにもそこそこ強く、全世界で野生化しています。毒性成分を植物全体に含んでおり、犬や猫に有害ですが、人には無害のようです。

　The crocosmia originated in South Africa, but it's pretty tolerant to the cold temperatures and has grown naturalized all over the world. All parts of the plant contains toxic substances that are harmful to dogs and cats, but appear to be harmless to humans.

薮茗荷(ヤブミョウガ) Pollia japonica

　ヤブミョウガは、減ってきているそうですが、近所の小さな流れの、薄暗く湿っぽい土手にたくさん生えています。

　Pollia japonica seems to be decreasing in population, but there are still many of them growing on the dark and damp banks of a small stream in the neighborhood.

松明花(タイマツバナ) oswego tea

　既に見ごろは過ぎていますが、この猛暑のさなか、力強く咲いていました。毎日暑い！

　Even though the ideal time for viewing them has already passed, they are still blooming vigorously in this heatwave. It's hot daily!

阿蘭陀菖蒲(オランダショウブ, グラジオラス) gladiolus

　沢山の花が縦に並んで咲くグラジオラスは、見ごたえがありますが、最近はあまり見かけなくなりました。

　Gladiolus have many flowers arranged vertically, which is worth seeing. However, I haven't seen them often these days. 

萱草(カンゾウ) tiger daylily

　花は、濃い橙色で花びらが大きく反り返る、とても派手な花です。似た花にヤブカンゾウがあります。花の咲き方が両者で異なり、カンゾウは一重咲き、ヤブカンゾウは八重咲です。

　Deep orange petals that curl back make the flowers very showy. There is a similar flower called tawny daylily. The way flowers bloom is different between the two. The tiger daylily has a single flower, while the tawny daylily has double flowers.

藪枯(ヤブカラシ) Causonis japonica

　名前の由来は、つるを伸ばして他の植物に絡みつき、薮を覆って木を枯らすことにあります。しかしながら、私は今までそのような光景を見たことはありません。

　The Japanese name for this plant means "making withered bushes."
　The name is derived from its vines that grow and wrap around other plants, covering bushes and causing trees to die. However, I have never seen such a strange scene.

ノウゼンカズラ Chinese trumpet vine

　ノウゼンカズラは、樹勢が強く地下茎を延ばして、周囲に芽を出し、増殖していきます。痛い思いをした経験から、地下茎を張る木を、庭に植えたくはありません。

　サンショを庭に植えて、何年も経って気が付くと、あまりにも立派な地下茎が庭を這っているいることに気が付き、平静な心を失ったことを覚えています。

　タラノキの苗木をいただいたので、庭に植え、毎年芽を天ぷらにして賞味していたのはよかったのですが、あるとき庭のあちこちから、タラノキの芽が出てきました。床下換気口からも、枝が突き出てきたのを見つけ、狼狽しました。
　タラノキは、繁殖力が非常に強いので、気が付かないうちに周囲に広がり、燐家にもご迷惑をかける恐れもあります。

　Trumpet vine is a robust tree that grows by extending its underground stems and sending out buds all around. I am avoiding planting any trees with underground stems in my garden due to previous painful experiences.

　I planted Japanese peppers in my garden, and then after many years, I noticed a too magnificent underground stem crawling around in the garden and I lost my calm.

　I was given a Japanese angelica tree sapling, which I planted in my garden and enjoyed making tempura of the buds every year. However, one day I noticed that Japanese angelica tree sprouts started appearing all over the garden. I was dismayed to find branches protruding from a floor vent as well. The Japanese angelica tree can spread to the surrounding area without your notice, and may cause trouble for the neighbor.

ムラサキカタバミの木子（きご） lilac oxalis bulbil

　ムラサキカタバミは、日本には江戸時代末期に観賞用として導入されましたが、繁殖力の強さから、今では環境省によって要注意外来生物に指定されています。
　ムラサキカタバミを上手に引き抜くと、大根のような形をした牽引根が出てきます。この牽引根は、夏になると縮小し、その上部には木子と呼ばれる小さな球根が鈴なりにつきます。この木子はクローンの塊りです。これらが散らばるので、ムラサキカタバミはどんどん増えていきます。

　The lilac oxalis was introduced to Japan at the end of the Edo period for ornamental purposes. However, due to its ability to reproduce rapidly, the Ministry of the Environment has now classified it as an invasive alien species of concern. If you pull it out nicely, a root that looks like radish, called traction root, emerges. This root shrinks in summer, and a cluster of small bulbs called bulbils appears above the root.  These are made up of many clones. As they scatter, the lilac oxalis population steadily to grow more and more.

クレマチス clematis

　我が家のクレマチスは、春に一度だけ開花する一季咲きだとずっと思っていました。ところが今年は春に咲いた後、今になってまた咲き始めました。春に先駆け、今年は初めて肥料を与えたところ、ツルが今までになく生い茂りました。このクレマチスは、本来は四季咲き品種ですが、栄養が不足していた可能性も考えられます。あるいは、季節の認識を間違えたのかも知れません。

　I used to think that the clematis in my garden was a single-blooming plant that only bloomed in the spring.
However, this year, after blooming in the spring, it has been blooming again.
This clematis may actually be ever-blooming and may have lacked nutrients.
Or it's possible that it misunderstand the season.

羊毛フェルト needle felting

　羊毛フェルトと聞くと、単に素材を意味しているように聞こえませんか。手芸の行為に焦点を当てた名前があっても良いと思います。英語のNeedle Feltingは相応しい名前と思いますが、さて日本語では何と表現すればよいでしょうか。

　これは、ヒナの鳴き声が聞こえてくるような良い作品だと思います。親鳥が虫をくわえていればさらに素敵になります。

　When I hear the term "wool felt", I simply think of it as a description of the material itself. I think "needle felting" is a good term because it focuses on the crafting process.

　The piece is excellent.  I can almost hear a peep peep the nestlings go. It would be even more lovely if the parent bird had a bug in its mouth.

クチナシ gardenia

　この花は、八重咲きのクチナシと思います。クチナシの香りは強く、ジャスミンと似ていますが、まったく香りを感じませんでした。
　
　I think this flower is a double-flowered gardenia. Although Gardenia has a strong scent, similar to jasmine, I could not detect any scent from this flower.

半夏生(ハンゲショウ) lizard's tail

　This plant is called "lizard's tail" because its flowers resemble a lizard's tail. It is the leaves with white spots that attract more attention than the flowers. In a similar way, the leaves of silver vine change color and become white. It is said that these color changes are both strategies to attract insects. It's like applying on makeup. I'm interesting in how insects feel.

春ウコン wild turmeric

　おや、こんなところに春ウコンの花が咲いています。
　ウコンには、春に咲く春ウコンと秋に咲く秋ウコンがあります。普通ウコンと呼ばれるのは、秋ウコンを指します。春ウコンと秋ウコンは成分が異なり、ドリンク剤などに配合されるのは秋ウコンです。

　Oh, look! A wild turmeric flower, which blooms in spring, is blooming in a place like this.
　There are two types of turmeric: "wild turmeric", which blooms in the spring, and just "turmeric", which blooms in the fall. "Wild turmeric" and "turmeric" have different ingredients, and the type that is used in energy drinks is "turmeric".

狐の手袋(ジギタリス) foxglove

　ジギタリスの花は、長い花軸に多数並んで咲くはずですが、一つだけポツンと草むらのなかで咲いていました。

ラムエアタービン Ram Air Turbine(RAT)

　航空機には多くの安全対策が施されていますが、依然として事故は起きます。
　それは小学生の頃でした、屋外で遊んでいると、突然地震の短い揺れを感じました。家に帰ると、その揺れは地震でなく旅客機の墜落事故によるものだと知りました。
　今日は、航空機のあまり知られていない非常用装置の一つを紹介します。それはラムエアタービン（RAT）と呼ばれるものです。このシステムは、平常時は機内に格納されていますが、主エンジンやAPUと呼ばれる補助動力装置がすべて故障した場合、バッテリー駆動で自動的に機外に飛び出します。機外に押し出された部分には、空気の流れで回転する羽根車が付いています。この回転力を利用して、最低限の操縦に必要な電力や油圧が供給されます。このお陰で無線交信ができたり、操縦系統などに関連する油圧系統を動かすことができるようになります。これで飛行機は滑空飛行できるようになります。飛行機は想像以上に滑空飛行が可能であり、RATのお陰でトウモロコシ畑に、何とか着陸できた事故例もあります。RATは、主として大型の飛行機に装備されています。

　Despite the many safety measures on board aircraft, accidents still occur.
　It happened when I was in elementary school.  While playing outside, I suddenly felt a short earthquake tremor. When I got home, I learned that the shaking was not an earthquake. It was the result of a plane crash. Today, I will be sharing with you one of the less well-known emergency systems on the aircraft. The name of this system is the Ram Air Turbine (RAT). This system is normally stored inside the aircraft, but if the main engines and auxiliary power units (APUs) fail, it will automatically pop outside the aircraft using battery power. The part protruding from the outside of the aircraft has an impeller that rotates due to the airflow. The electrical and hydraulic power required for minimal maneuvering is provided by this rotational force. The ability to communicate over the radio and operate hydraulic systems related to the flight control system is made possible by this. Planes are capable of gliding beyond your imagination, and there have been instances where a plane was able to land in a cornfield due to the RAT. RATs are mainly found on larger aircraft.

山法師(ヤマボウシ) Cornus kousa

　ハナミズキの花と思いましたが、花弁の先が尖っているので、これはヤマボウシです。花弁は普通4枚ですが、これには5枚あります。
　花弁と書きましたが、正確には花弁ではなく、葉が変化した苞と呼ばれるものです。

　At first, I thought it was a dogwood flower, but when I saw that the petals had pointed tips, I realised it was a Cornus kousa. Typically, the flower has four petals, but this one has five.
　I wrote "petals", but they are not actually petals. They are "bracts". These are modified leaves.

勲章菊(ガザニア) gazania

　ガザニアの花は、春から秋にかけて思いのほか長い間咲き続けます。この時期になると、年がら年中咲いているような気がします。

　The blooming period of the gazania flower is surprisingly long, lasting from spring to autumn. Whenever I see them at this time of year, I get the feeling they are in bloom year-round.

ホタルブクロ cornish bellflower

　ホタルブクロをみると、台湾の平渓天燈節と、タイのコムローイとのランタンを飛ばすイベントが思い浮かびます。
　この小さいホタルブクロには、願い事を書くことができませんね。

　Seeing cornish bellflowers, I imagine two lantern-flying events: one is the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in Taiwan, and the other is the Khom Loi lantern-flying event in Thailand.  
　These flowers are too small to write wishes on.

ナツグミ cherry silverberry

　ナツグミは、サクランボに比べてなじみが少ないです。お店で見売られているのを、見たことはありません。味は酸味が強いそうです。

　The cherry silverberries are less familiar to me than cherries. I have never seen it on sale in any shop. They say this berry is tart. 

悪茄子(ワルナスビ) Horse nettle

　茎や葉に鋭いとげがあり、さらに全草に毒があり、その上、繁殖力が強いので嫌われ者です。外来生物法により要注意外来生物に指定されています。そんなつもりで生まれた訳ではないので、お気の毒と思いますが致し方ないですね。

　It is disliked because it has sharp thorns on its stems and leaves. What's more, the entire plant is poisonous and reproduces quickly. It has been designated a hazardous alien species under Japan's Alien Species Act. I don't think they were born intending to be like that, but there's nothing that can be done to change it.

金糸梅(キンシバイ) Hypericum patulum

　キンシバイの花びらは五枚あり、雌しべの先が五つに分離しています。写真では分かりませんが、雄しべの根本が五つの束になっています。この花は、五という数字にに縁があるようです。

　The Hypericum patulum flower has five petals are the tip of pistil is five-lobed. The stamen base is divided into five bundles, despite its unclear appearance in this photograph. The St. John's wort flower seems to have a connection with the number five.

アメガシワの雄花 male flower of Japanese Mallotus

　これは、アメガシワの雄花です。花があふれるほど咲いていましたが、雄花ばかりのようでした。

　This is the male flower of Japanese Mallotus. Although there were plenty of flowers in bloom, they all appeared to be male. 

白木蓮(ハクモクレン) lilytree

　ニョキニョキと棒状のものが葉の間から突き出ています。葉の形を見ると、元より先の方が幅広なので、この木は多分ハクモクレン、突起物はその実です。材質感から、実ではなく蕾のように見えますが、それは誤りです。

　Stick-like things are visible, sticking out from between the leaves. Looking at the shape of the leaf, which is wider at the tip than at the base, I would say that this is probably a lily tree, and the protrusions are its fruit. Although they appear to be buds rather than fruits due to the texture of the material, this is a mistake.

デンドロビウム・ノビル Dendrobium nobile

　この花を初めて見たとき、真っ直ぐに伸びた節のある茎に興味を持ちました。
　この茎は、偽鱗茎と呼ばれ、水分と栄養分を蓄える貯蔵器官です。園芸分野では、バルブとよばれていますが、普通の球根とは異なります。

　When I first saw this flower, I found its straight, knobbly stems interesting. This stem, called pseudobulb, is storage organs that store water and nutrients. The term used in horticulture for this is a bulb, but it is not the same as a commonly called bulb.

排水口 drain

　小学校の校庭に降った雨水が流れ出る排水口です。水と一緒に砂も流れ出るので、排水口は詰まりました。しばらくすると、そこに植物が育ち始めました。不確かな環境において、種が継がれていく、生命力のしたたかさを感じます。

　地球上で最強の生物はクマムシ(water bear)だそうです。高温、低温、高圧、真空状態、さらに人の致死量1,000倍の放射線を浴びても死なないらしいです。
　クマムシなら月に行ける。

　This is a drain outlet. Rainwater that falls on the schoolyard of an elementary school flew out of it. The drain got clogged because sand flowed out with the water. After some time has passed, plants started to grow there.
　I sense the tenacity of the life force because seeds are passed on, even in uncertain environments.

　The water bear is said to be the strongest creature on Earth. They can apparently survive high and low temperatures, high pressure, vacuum conditions and exposure to radiation 1,000 times the lethal dose for humans.
　Water bear can go to the moon without any problems.

フロリダローズ Florida rose blueberry

　フロリダローズは、ブルーベリー実は熟しても紫色にならず、ローズピンク色になります。魅力的な色をしています。紫色のブルーベリーの実は、冷凍品で売られていますが、フロリダローズは販売されていません。

　Florida Rose blueberry does not turn purple when ripe. It is a rose pink color. The color is very appealing. Purple blueberries are sold frozen, but Florida rose blueberries are not sold in Japan.

木苺(キイチゴ) bramble

　美味しそうですが、食べずに、後ろ髪をひかれながら通り過ぎました。

　They looked delicious, but I didn't eat any. I just walked past them, having mixed feelings. 

ハニーサックル honeysuckle

　花をつけた茎は、葉から突き抜けているように見えます。また、茎の先には複数の花が輪生しており、その黄橙色と相まって人目を引きます。

　The stem that bears flowers appear to emerge from a leave. Furthermore, multiple flowers grow in whorls at the end of the stem, which, along with their yellow-orange color, make them very eye-catching.

亜米利加風露(アメリカフウロ) carolina geranium

　最近、何度もこのブログに登場してお馴染みになったアメリカフウロです。日当たりが悪いのか、栄養不足かはわかりませんが、石垣にまばらに広がっています。ここでは、まだわずかの花が咲いていました。

　This is the familiar carolina geranium, which has featured on this blog several times recently. I'm not sure if it's due to a lack of sunlight or nutrients, but they spread sparsely across the stone wall. A few flowers are still in bloom here.

黄色スズメバチ yellow hornet

　キノコは、倒木や枯れ木、落ち葉などの有機物を分解し、栄養分として利用します。その分解によりそれらの有機物は最終的に土に戻ります。キノコのおかげで森が綺麗に保たれているのです。
　そんな感謝の気持ちを込めて写真をとっていたら、黄色スズメバチがどこからとも現れ威嚇してきました。カチカチという音を立てていないので、まだ攻撃される段階ではないので、一目散で退散しました。
　近くには、蜂のトラップが仕掛けられていましたので、この近辺は蜂の出没が多いのでしょう。
　この時、私は黒の帽子を被っていました。森に入るときは、黒い帽子や服は避けるのがよいです。

　Mushrooms decompose organic matter such as fallen trees, dead wood, and using it as nutrients. As these organic matters are decomposed, they eventually return to  the soil. Mushrooms help to keep forests clean by removing waste.
　While I was taking a photo, feeling grateful, a yellow hornet appeared out of nowhere and started to threaten me. It wasn't making any clicking noises, it was just warning me. I left the place as quickly as possible. There was a bee trap set up nearby. Bees seem to appear frequently in the area.
　I was wearing a black cap at the time. It is best to avoid wearing black cap or clothing when entering the forest.

夏すみれ torenia

　人が両腕を頭上に上げて、合わせているように見えるのがおしべです。この二つのおしべは、昆虫が来ると組んだ腕を左右に分けて、その先端の花粉を昆虫の背につけます。
　写真では分かりにくいですが、花の奥につながる筒の入り口上部に唇のような形をしためしべがあります。昆虫が花の奥に入り込む時にめしべに触れると、花粉がめしべに付きます。すると、唇が閉じて花粉が取り込まれます。
　不思議な仕掛けが組み込まれています。

　The stamen appears as if a person raising their arms above their head and putting the hands together. When an insect arrives, the two stamens move apart, and the pollen at their tips is deposited onto its back. 
　It is difficult to make out in the photo, but there is a lip-shaped pistil at the end of the tubular opening that leads to the back of the flower.
When an insect enters a flower and touches a pistil, pollen adheres to it.
The lips then close, capturing the pollen.
　A mysterious mechanism is built into the flower.

未央柳(ビヨウヤナギ) Chinese hypericum

　この花の見どころは、シベですね。花びらもシベを隠さないように控えめに開いています。

　The highlight of this flower is the stamens, isn't it? The petals are open modestly so as not to hide the stamens.

大紅空木(オオベニウツギ) old fashioned weigela

　この木は、一昨日に投稿したハコネウツギの近縁種のオオベニウツギです。両者の花の形はよく似ています。幹や枝を切ると、どちらも中空（がらんどう）になっているそうです。そのためか、思い込みかはわかりませんが、幹や枝の見た目には頼りなさそうです。

　This tree is an "old fashioned weigela", a close relative of the weigela coraeensis that I posted the day before yesterday. The two flowers are almost identical in shape. Apparently, both the trunk and the branches are hollow when you cut them. I'm not sure if that's the reason or if it's just my imagination. The trunk and branches look unstable. 

虫取り撫子(ムシトリナデシコ) sweet William Catchfly

　ムシトリナデシコは、茎の上部に粘液を分泌する部分を持ちます。この部分は、小さな昆虫がここ以上に茎を登るのを防ぐと言われています。日本では、盗蜜をするだけで受粉に関与しないアリが、主な対象と考えられています。英名ではchatchflyと呼ばれるので、彼の地では対象は主にハエなのでしょう。
　モンシロチョウは、茎を登るわけではないので、平和裏に花の蜜を吸っていました。

　The sweet William Catchfly has a part in the upper part of the stem that secretes mucus. It is said that this part prevents small insects from climbing any further up the stem. In Japan, it is believed that ants that steal nectar and are not involved in pollination are the main targets. Its English name is "Chatchfly," so probably the targets are flies in that countries.
　The cabbage white butterfly does not climb stems, so it peacefully sucked nectar from the flowers.

箱根卯木(ハコネウツギ) weigela coraeensis

　ハコネウツギはわが国の固有種です。花の色は、白、ピンク、赤の3つが同じ木に咲いています。ところが実際は、はじめに白色で咲きますが、白がやがてピンクになり、ピンクがその後紅色に変わるという変わった花です。

　Weigela coraeensis is endemic to Japan. The flowers come in three different colors - white, pink, and red - and they all bloom on the same tree. In truth, it is a unique flower that first blooms white, but the white afterward turns pink, and then the pink changes to crimson.

立葵(タチアオイ) hollyhock

　ぐっと近づけば、心の中に探検の世界が広がってきます。滑らないように気をつけねばとか、ここを超えるにはザイルが必要だとか。

　If you get more and more closer, a world of exploration opens up in your mind. Things like, I have to be careful not to slip, and I need a zail to get through this area.

亜米利加風露(アメリカフウロ) carolina geranium

　野草にまぎれてあちこちで、アメリカフウロの葉が、赤く色づいています。この片隅は、特にきれいな色になっていました。

　Here and there amid the wild grass, the leaves of the Caroline geranium are turning red. This small area was a particularly beautiful color.

赤芽柏(アカメガシワ) Japanese Mallotus

　新芽は、鮮やかな赤色をしており、ひときわ目を引きます。この色は、葉の表面に密生する毛の色です。意外にも、葉の表面は緑色です。赤い毛には、紫外線から新芽を守る役割があります。

　The new shoots are a vivid red that really catches your attention. This color is the color of the dense hairs on the leaves surface. Unexpectedly, the surface of the leaves is green. The red hairs play a role in shielding new shoots from ultraviolet rays.

接骨木(ニワトコ) elderberry

　葉の形（奇数羽状複葉）からこの木は、サワグルミだと思っていました。ところが淡黄白色の細かな花が群がるように咲いたので、ニワトコであることが分かりました。こんな見上げるようなニワトコを見るのは初めてです。６ｍ位にまでなるそうです。

　I have thought this tree was a Japanese wingnut because of the leaf shape is odd-pinnate compound leaves. However, the small light yellowish white flowers bloom in cluster and I realized it is elderberry. This is the first time I have ever looked up such a tall elderberry. Apparently it can grow to about 6m.

狐薊(キツネアザミ) Hemisteptia lyrata / false thistle

　花がアザミに似ていますが、アザミではないことから、キツネアザミの名がついたようです。植物学者の牧野富太郎博士曰く、「アザミに似るがよく見るとそうでなくて狐に騙されたように感じる」
　随分昔のことですが、私は牧野記念庭園の直ぐそばに住んでいたので、記念庭園には時々見学に行きました。現在はどうなっているのか知りませんが、草むらのような庭だったのを覚えています。

　Foxes are said to be deceiving people in Japan.
　Although this flower resembles a thistle, it is not actually a thistle, which is why in Japanese it is called a fox disguising as a thistle. Botanist Dr. Makino Tomitaro wrote, "It looks like a thistle, but on closer inspection, it's not, and I feel like I've been tricked by a fox."
　A long time ago, I lived very close to the Makino Memorial Garden, and I visited there occasionally. I am not sure what it looks like currently, but I recall it was an area covered in overgrown grass.
