モミジルコウ cardinal climber

　モミジルコウは、ツル性の一年草です。見上げるまでに高く成長し、トランペット型の赤い花を夏から秋にかけて咲かせます。その姿は頂上を目指す登山者を連想させます。

　Cardinal climber is an annual vine. The height of the plant is so high that you need to look up to see the top, and its trumpet-shaped red flowers bloom from summer to autumn. The appearance reminds me of a mountain climber climbing towards the summit.

オリーブ olive

　我が家に帰り、台所のエクストラバージンオイル裏面の小さなラベルを見てびっくりしました。てっきりエクストラバージンオイルだと思っていましたが、実は菜種オイルで、エクストラバージンオイルが30%調合されているものでした。如何にもエクストラバージンオイルの雰囲気たっぷりのラベルで、しかも安かったので購入したのでしょう。これからはしっかりチェックして買おうと思います。
　とは言っても、私には味の違いが分からないので、何を買っても同じかもしれません。身も蓋もないお話でした。

　When I arrived home, I was astonished to see the tiny label on the back of the extra virgin olive oil bottle in my kitchen. I assumed it was extra virgin olive oil, but it was actually canola oil with only 30% extra virgin olive oil mixed in. The label has the atmosphere of extra virgin olive oil, and it may be cheaper, so that's probably why I bought it. I will make sure to check the label of oil carefully before buying it from now on. 
　To be honest and bravery, I can't tell the difference in taste, so it's probably dose n't matter what I buy.

石榴(ザクロ) pomegranate

　厚くて硬い皮に覆われた内部には、赤い宝石のように輝く、種を取り巻く果肉が沢山詰まっています。とても美味しそうに見えるので、子供の頃に食べたことがあります。甘味は少なく、酸っぱくて、面倒な種があるので、私の好みではありません。
　皮には有毒物質が含まれているので、決して噛んで剥いてはいけません。

　Covered with a thick and hard skin, the inside is filled with a lot of flesh surrounding the seeds, which shine like red jewels. It looks delicious and I remember eating it once of twice as a child. I don't like it because it's not very sweet, strong sour, and has troublesome seeds, but it's my personal preference. 
　The skin contains poisonous substances, so you should never bite it off. 

西洋藤袴(セイヨウフジバカマ) thoroughwort

　ヒヨドリバナ属（Eupatorium）に属するキク科の植物は、似た特徴をもつ植物が多く、私には見分けがつきません。ここでは、植物名をセイヨウフジバカマとしておきます。
　写真から受ける印象は、落ち着いていて、控えめでありながらも、深みのある趣や風格が感じられると思いませんか。

　It's hard for me to distinguish many plants in the Asteraceae family, including the genus Eupatorium, due to their similar characteristics. Here, I posted the plant under the name thoroughwort.
　The photograph leaves a calm and modest impression, but it also has a deep charm and dignity, don't you think? 

天竺牡丹(ダリア) dahlia

　ダリアの花は、前から見ても後ろから見ても、美しいと思います。
　ダリアの原産地はメキシコです。日本では天竺牡丹と命名されました。
花の姿が牡丹(tree peony)に似ているので、牡丹と呼ばれるのはわかりますが、インドを意味する天竺が付いているのは不思議です。
　調べてみると次のことが分かりました。ダリアは、18世紀にメキシコからヨーロッパのスペインに渡り、その後オランダからインドを経由して、江戸時代の日本へもたらされました。天竺牡丹という名前から、そんな歴史をたどることができました。

　Dahlia flowers are stunning when viewed from either the front or the back.
　Dahlias are native to Mexico. Tenjiku peony was the name given to it in Japan. The flower's figure resembles a tree peony, so it's understandable why it's called a peony, but it's odd that it has the word "Tenjiku" (India) added to its name.
　Following my investigation, I came across the following: Dahlias were brought from Mexico to Spain in Europe in the 18th century, and then from the Netherlands via India to Japan during the Edo period. Through the name of "Tenjiku peony," I could trace it's history. 

アンジェラ angela

　生育旺盛なアンジェラは、花が咲き乱れるツルバラですが、もう今の時期になると、まばらな状態になりました。

　Angela is a vigorously growing climbing rose that blooms prolifically, but by this time of year the flowers are sparse.

ジャルダンドゥフランス Jardeins de France

　フランスの庭という名前のついた華やかなバラです。
　先日、パリのルーブル美術館で宝飾品強盗事件が起きました。犯行時間はわずか約7分で、推定被害額8800万ユーロ（約155億円）の宝飾品を持ち去られたということです。
　アルセーヌ・ルパンの再来かと思う用意周到な手口の犯罪でした。残念なのは、アルセーヌ・ルパンのような義賊でなく、単なる盗人のようです。

　This gorgeous rose is named "French garden".
　At The Louvre Museum in Paris, there was recently a theft of jewelry. The crime took just seven minutes and involved the theft of jewelry worth an estimated 88 million euros (about $102 million). The crime was so well-planned that it looked like Arsene Lupin was returning. Unfortunately, they seem to be just thieves, not heroic outlaws like Arsene Lupin. 

ユリイカ eureka

　バラの品種は、非常に多く4万種以上存在するといわれています。原種は約100～250種と少なく、残りは園芸品種です。
　品種が多いとそれぞれを区別するため、分類項目も増えます。一例として、ユリイカの分類を以下に示します。

　It is believed that there are numerous rose varieties, with over 40,000 in total. There are only about 100 to 250 species of the original wild type, and the rest are cultivated varieties. スイートアフトン sweet afton

　"アメリカ"で作出されたバラですが、名前の由来はなぜか"スコットランド"の南西部を流れるのアフトン川です。
　「アフトン川の流れ」という"スコットランド"民謡は、"アメリカ"の歌曲だそうです。

　This rose got its name from the Afton River, which flows through the southwest part of "Scotland," even though it was created in America.
　The "Scottish folk" song Flow Gently Sweet Afton is said to be an "American song." 

オクラ okura

　オクラの原産地は、アフリカ北東部です。熱帯地方では、多年草なので毎年繰り返し実をつけます。一方、日本では冬が寒いので、越冬できず一年草です。
　温暖化が進めば、日本でもオクラは多年草になる可能性があります。

　オクラは花が咲いた後、実は上向きに付く特徴があります。収穫のタイミングを逃すと、下の写真のように、大きく硬くなります。茶色になっているのは、鉄分が多く含まれるので、錆ではないかと思います。

　Okra is native to northeastern Africa. In tropical regions, it is a perennial plant that produces fruit every year. On the other hand, in Japan, where winters are cold, it cannot survive the winter and is an annual plant. 
　Okra could become a perennial plant in Japan as global warming progresses.

　Okra has the unique feature that the fruit grows upward after the flowers wither. The fruit will become large and hard if you don't harvest it on time, as shown in the photo below. It's probable that the brown color is rust due to its high iron content.

犬酸漿(イヌホウズキ)の実 berries of black nightshade

　今日は時期としては、ずいぶん寒い一日でした。地球温暖化はどこへ行ってしまったのでしょう。

　三つ前の投稿で、イヌホウズキの花の写真をアップしました。そこでは、まだ実が生っていませんでした。今日は、たまたま通りがかった別の場所で、たわたに実った木を見つけました。

　For this time of year, it was quite cold today. I wonder where global warming has gone.

　I have shared a photo of black nightshade flowers in the post three posts ago. There was no fruit present yet. While passing by another place today, I came across a tree full of berries.

箒草(ホウキグサ) Mexican burningbush

　こんもり膨らんだホウキグサが、畑の縁にいくつか並んでいます。その一つが割れています。猫が飛び込んだのでしょうか。
　ホウキグサ（草）は、ホウキギ（木）とも呼ばれます。さて、この植物は草なのでしょうか、あるいは木なのでしょうか。正解は、1年草の草です。

　There are several Mexican burningbushes at the edge of the field. One of them split open. Maybe a cat jumped in?
　The Mexican burning bush is referred by the Japanese name "broom-making grass" or "broom-making tree". So, is this plant a grass or a tree? The answer is a grass that grows annually.

アカザ葛(アカザカズラ) madeira vine

　アカザカズラは、別名オカワカメとも呼ばれます。その厚味のある葉を茹でると、ぬめりが出てワカメ のような食感となります。
　この写真を撮るのに、3か所蚊に刺されました。

　Madeira vine has the alias name "land-wakame seaweed" in Japan. Boiling the thick leaves results in their becoming slimy and having a texture similar to that of wakame seaweed.
　I got three mosquito bites while taking these photos.

犬酸漿(イヌホウズキ) black nightshade

　果実ができつつあるイヌホオズキです。
　植物名につく接頭辞の"イヌ"の意味は、"役に立たない"という意味です。犬には大変失礼なことです。"異なるもの"と解釈する説明を最近見ました。犬好きには朗報です。

　The black nightshade is beginning to produce fruits.
　The Japanese name for black nightshade is "dog-round cherry." The prefix "dog" in plant names is said to mean "useless" in Japan, but I've recently come across explanations that interpret it as "something different". This is a good tendency for dog-persons. :-)

ルドベキア blackeyed Susan

　石垣と舗装の隙間からルドベキアが育っていました。

　The gaps between the stone wall and the pavement were home to blackeyed Susans' growth.

松葉菊(マツバギク)と朧月(オボロヅキ) trailing ice plant and ghost plant

　マツバギクは上にあり、朧月はその下にあります。朧月という名前にはあまり馴染みがないですが、この多肉植物を見たことがある方も多いと思います。マツバギクは多肉植物ではありませんが、その葉は多肉植物のようにふくよかな形をしています。

　The trailing ice plants are located on the top and the ghost plant is located below. The ghost plant belongs to the group of succulents. The trailing ice plant's leaves are plump and shaped like succulents, even though they are not a succulent.

彼岸花 (ヒガンバナ) red cluster lily

　今年は猛暑のためヒガンバナの開花は遅くなりましたが、そんなヒガンバナも、そろそろ見納めです。ヒガンバナは茎が長くすっきりとしたたたずまいで、ヒガンバナだけでまとまって咲きます。ここでは、ごちゃごちゃした環境で咲いています、そして蜂の巣も見えます。蜂はもう居ませんが、ギボシアシナガバチの巣だと思います。ギボシアシナガバチは、蜂の中でも攻撃性が高いので、居なくなっていてよかったです。

　The red spider lilies bloomed late this year because of the extreme heat, but they will be the last time we see them. Red cluster lilies have long stems and only  red cluster lilies bloom together in a refreshed aura. Here, they bloom in a cluttered environment,  and the beehive can be seen. There are no bees now, but I think it is a beehive of Japanese paper wasps. It makes me happy that the aggressive wasps had become extinct by then.

花虎の尾(ハナトラノオ) obedient plant

　ハナトラノオの花は、一本の長い軸に沿って、規則正しく並んで咲きます。この植物の葉の形は、ハナトラノオのようですが、花は少々バラバラな咲き方をしています。ハナトラノオと言ってしまうには、抵抗があります。

　The obedient plant flower blooms in rows that are regular rows along a single long axis. The leaves of this plant are similar to those of obedient plants. However, the blooming pattern of the flower is slightly disorganized. I feel slightly uneasy about calling it the obedient plant.

水引(ミズヒキ) junpsheed

　ミズヒキは、長い茎にピンクの小さな花を点々とつけます。花の外側はピンクですが内側は白です。風情のあるたたずまいですが、見た目によらず強い繁殖力を持っています。

　A long junpsheed stem has small pink flowers dotted on it. The flower has a pink exterior and a white interior. It has a charming appearance, but contrary to its appearance, it has a strong reproductive ability.

荒地盗人萩(アレチヌスビトハギ) panicled tick-trefoil

　とても面白い名前が付けられた植物です。荒れ地で育ち、豆果の形が盗人の足跡に似ていることから、この名前がつけられました。

　The Japanese name for this plant means "thief of rough land", which is quite intriguing. It grows in rough land and was named after the shape of its legumes, which resemble thief footprints.

達磨(だるま) daruma

　この達磨達は、眉毛と髭が長いのが特徴で、このような達磨は珍しいです。この長い眉毛と髭が何を象徴しているのか、私は知りません。ちょっと薄気味悪いですね。

　The round shape of this traditional Japanese doll is known as Daruma. Even if you push it down, it will stand up quickly because the bottom is heavy. It is said that Daruma dolls symbolize the spirit of never giving up no matter how many times they fail, which is called "falling down seven times, getting up eight times." These Daruma dolls are uncommon because they have long eyebrows and beards. I don't know what those long eyebrows and beard symbolize. In my opinion, they are a bit creepy.

完熟ゴーヤ ripe bitter gourd

　完熟したゴーヤの果実は黄色くなります。果実の中を見ると、種が赤いゼリー状の被膜で覆われています。そして、ヘタは依然として緑色のままです。この黄と赤と緑の色の取り合わせはとても魅力的だと思います。
　赤いゼリー状の部分だけ見ると、気味が悪いと感じる人もいますが、食べると甘くて美味しいです。有毒だという説もありますが、一度に大量に食べなければ問題なさそうです。

　大事なことを書き忘れるところでした。食べられるのは赤いゼリー状の被膜です。種そのものを食べてはいけません！

　A fully ripe bitter gourd turns yellow. If you look inside the fruit, the seeds are covered with a red jelly-like layer. And the stem is still green. I think this combination of yellow, red and green is very attractive.
　Some people feel creepy when they see only the red jelly-like layer, but it is sweet and delicious when you eat it. There is a theory that it is poisonous, but there seems to be no problem as long as you don't eat a large amount at once.

　I almost forgot to write something important. What you can eat is a red jelly-like layer. Don't eat the seeds themselves! 

臭木(クサギ) harlequin glorybower

 　木の名前が示すように、クサギの葉や茎は臭いことで知られています。その一方で、花の香りは心地よいとも言われています。花は常時咲いている訳ではないので、葉や茎の匂いが、この木を代表するようになったのでしょう。
　同様に、人も日頃の行いが大事ですね。

　As the name of the tree suggests, the leaves and stems of the Harlequin Glorybower are known to have a odd smell. Otherwise, the flowers are said to have a pleasant fragrance. This tree's name "クサギ" means "Stinky Tree" in Japan, which is unfortunate, I think.
　The smell of the leaves and stems has probably become a symbol of this tree because the flowers don't bloom all the time.
　 People's everyday actions are equally important.

ネグンドカエデ acer negundo

　このネグンドカエデは、葉に斑が入るフラミンゴ種だと思います。観葉植物のように魅力的な葉を付けています。暑さに強くないので、温暖化の影響で熱帯化したこの地で、今後も美しい葉を付けるか心配です。

　I think this Negundo maple is a flamingo variety that has variegated leaves. It has attractive leaves like a houseplant. It's not tolerant to heat, so I'm concerned if it will have beautiful leaves in the future in this area that has become like tropical due to global warming.

左利き用のカメラ left-handed camera

　私は右利きなのですが、右手の指がこんな状態なので、カメラの操作がうまくできません。左手だけで操作できるカメラがあればいいなと思っています。
　昔、そういったカメラが実際にありました。フィルムカメラの時代に、京セラ株式会社が「サムライ」シリーズとして、右利き用と左利き用の両方のカメラを販売していたのです。どちらも片手で撮影できる、ユニークなカメラでした。
　ただ残念ながら、左利き用のカメラはそのシリーズ以外には、今までにもこれからも登場しないと思います。 

 

 　I'm right-handed, but due to some issues with my right-hand fingers, I can't operate a camera very well at the moment. I wish there were a camera that could be operated entirely with the left hand.
　Actually, such a camera did exist in the past. Back in the film camera era, Kyocera Corporation released the “Samurai” series, which included models for both right-handed and left-handed users. They were unique cameras that allowed for one-handed shooting.
　Unfortunately, aside from that series, I don't think any other left-handed cameras have ever been made—neither before nor since.

 

 

 

 

緋合歓(ヒネム) fairy duster

　花のように見えるものは赤い雄蕊の集合体です。ネムノキの近縁なので、花と葉はネムノキに似ています。花だけ見ると、ブラシの木にも少し似ています。

　What looks like a flower is actually a cluster of red stamens. Its species is closely related to the silk tree, therefore the flowers and leaves resemble those of the silk tree. Just looking at the flowers, it looks a little bit like a flower of bottlebrush.

 

 

タラノキの涙 tears of Japanese angelica tree

　タラノキの剪定の後、あめ状に固まる樹液がどんどん出てきます。琥珀のように輝き、宝石のようです。

　After pruning a  Japanese angelica tree, sap that gradually hardens into a candy-like substance will come out in large quantities flowing from the cut surface. It shines like amber and looks like a jewel.

ペチュニア petunia

　どこから侵入したのか、庭にペチュニアが勝手に育って花を増やしています。種が風に乗って運ばれてきたのでしょう。
　うどんこ病が発生しているのが見て取れます。薬剤を使う前に、水で20倍に薄めたお酢で退治できるか試してみます。

　I don't know how and where the petunia came from, but it's growing on its own and producing flowers. It is probable that a seed was carried by the wind.
　You can see that powdery mildew is developing. The development of powdery mildew is visible. I will try to get rid of it with vinegar diluted 20 times with water before using the chemical.

蚊やき burn a mosquito

　夏に蚊に悩まされるのは、昔も今も変わらないようです。江戸時代に歌川国貞の作品に、蚊を焼いている女性を描いた浮世絵があります。私は蚊を火で炙るという発想がなかったので、インパクトのある浮世絵です。火事にならなかったのでしょうか。
　蚊に刺されたときのあの痒さは辛いですが、ある蚊の研究者の話では、沢山さされると耐性がついて、痒ゆさを感じにくくなるそうです。

　 It seems that we are bothered by mosquitoes in summer is still the same as before. Among the works of Utagawa Kunisada of the Edo period is an ukiyo-e print depicting a woman burning a mosquito. I had never thought of burning a mosquito over a fire, so this is a very impactful ukiyo-e print for me. I'm worried that there might be a fire.
　The itchiness caused by mosquito bites is excruciating, but according to one mosquito researcher, if you get bitten many times, you will develop a tolerance and will no longer feel the itch as much.

夜空に咲く Blooming in the night sky

しっぽのある一筋の光が夜空へ駆け上がっていく。
これは大きい、大きいぞという声が聞こえてくる。
スピードが落ちると、パッと、花火が巨大な円形に開いた。
一拍遅れて、ドンッと衝撃波がお腹に重く届いた。
やがて、火花は、しだれる枝のように、静かに散っていった。

A streak of light dashs up into the night sky.
I hear voices saying, "This is big, this is big."
As it slowed down, the fireworks exploded, sending sparks in huge circles.
A moment later, a shock wave hit my stomach with a heavy thud.
Subsequently, the sparks scattered quietly like drooping branches.

これは打ち上げ花火の、花火玉を入れる玉皮(たまがわ)と呼ばれる容器の半分です。もう半分はどこかへ飛んで行きました。

This is a half container, called Tamagawa in Japanese, to put firework balls in for skyrocket fireworks. The other half flew away to somewhere.

オニユリ(鬼百合) tiger lily

　オニユリを下から見上げると、鬼というよりは、上から襲ってくるタコに見えます。

　オニユリは種子をつくることができません。増やすには、ムカゴを利用するか鱗茎を株分けするかです。
　種子をつくらない植物は、３倍体といって染色体の数が、通常2セットのところ、3セットあります。この状態では、配偶子の形成が上手く行われません。３倍体は、植物や一部の動物で自然に発生することもありますが、品種改良などで人為的に作られることもあります。スイカやバナナなどの種なし果物は、品種改良で３倍体を作った結果です。
　種ありバナナを一度食べてみたいものです。

　When I look up at a tiger lily from below, it looks more like a octopus attacking from above than a  tiger lily.

　A tiger lily is incapable of producing seeds. Propagating them can be done by either using propagules or dividing bulbs.
　Plants that don't produce seeds are called triploid, which means they have three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two. In this condition, gamete formation is not properly carried out. Triploids occur naturally in plants and some animals, but can also be created artificially through selective breeding. Seedless fruits such as watermelons and bananas are the result of selective breeding.
　I'm interested in trying a banana with seeds.

白花百日紅 (シロバナサルスベリ) white crape myrtle

　白花百日紅の花穂が風にそよぐ姿は涼しげですが、撮影する私は暑さで焼けこげそうです。

　The white crape myrtle flower spikes swaying in the breeze look cool, but I feel like I'm going to burn to a crisp while taking photos. 

アガパンサス agapanthus

　日当たりもよい場所なのに、なんで首が曲がったのでしょう。

　It's a sunny place, but why did the agapanthus neck bend?
