ツユクサは、万葉集には月草(つきくさ)の名前で登場しています。ツユクサは朝に咲き、ひるのあいだにしぼむのに、なぜ月草と言うのでしょうか。月には夜のイメージがあります。
万葉の時代には、ツユクサの花を布に、こ擦り付けて青く着色していました。着草(つきくさ)が、なまって月草になったようです。ただ、この着色法で染めた色は、水に浸すと消てしまいます。
花は日中の短時間しかもたないことに加えて、染めた色も簡単に消えてしまうというはかなさが、万葉人の心を捉えたようです。
