カタパルト catapult

　人間が人間たる所以は、色々云われてきていますが、物を投げるのが上手（強くて正確）なこともその一つと言えます。

　何十年も前に、奥多摩の天祖山に、人に石をなげる猿がいると、ある小さなコミュニティで評判になったことがありました。その噂を、真に受けたわけではありませんが、山歩きが好きだったので、天祖山に出かけてみました。石をなげる猿どころか、猿一匹とも出会う山行ではありませんでした。

　ある研究によると、人間は猿より肩関節の可動範囲が広く、ものを投げるときに腕を大きく後ろに引けることができるそうです。野球のピッチャーが、オーバースローで、球を投げる姿を想像してください。大きく後ろに引く事によって、腱がエネルギーを蓄え、カタパルトように物を投擲できるそうです。筋肉だけの力で投げているのではありません。

　野球のピッチャーが球を投げるスピードは、直球で130 km/hから165 km/h程度です。それに引き換え、チンパンジーが物を投げるスピードは、たかだか30km/h程度です。

　猿が進化して、人に石を投げるようになったら脅威ですね。

　Several reasons have been suggested for human nature. Being good at throwing things (sharp and exact) is one of them.

　Decades ago, there was a rumor among a small community that there were monkeys that throw stones at people on Mt. Tenso in Okutama.

I didn't take the rumor seriously, but I liked hiking, so I went to Mt. Tenso.

It was a hike where I didn't see a single monkey, let alone a stone-throwing monkey.

　A study has shown that humans have a wider range of movement of the shoulder joint than monkeys, allowing them to pull their arms further back when throwing objects. Imagine a baseball pitcher throwing a ball overhand pitch. By pulling the arm back a lot, the tendons store energy and can be used to throw objects like a catapult. We don't just throw things with muscle power.

　The speed at which a baseball pitcher throws a fastball ranges from 130 km/h to 165 km/h. On the other hand, chimpanzees throw objects at only 30 km/h at best.

　It would be a threat if monkeys evolve and started throwing stones at humans, wouldn't it.

野イチゴ wild strawberry

　野イチゴが、みずみずしい実をつけていました。

　Wild strawberries are bearing juicy fruit.

万両(マンリョウ) coral ardisia

　直立した茎の上部には葉がつきますが、下部は枝葉がないのですっきりした樹形のマンリョウです。でも、ちょっと周りが雑然としていますね。

　The upright stem has leaves on the upper part, but the lower part has no branches and leaves, so it has a neat shape. But this place is a bit of a mess.

高野箒(コウヤボウキ) Kouya-bouki tree

　日に照らされて、コウヤボウキの綿毛が白く輝き、その存在を主張しています。

　In the sun, the fluff of the Koya-bouki tree shines white, claiming its existence.

火の神 god of fire

　山道に、小さな神社がありました。格子戸に信者の方が彫ったと思われる、木彫りの火の神が、格子戸に針金で括りつけられていました。

There was a small shrine on the mountain path. A wood-carved fire god, thought to have been carved by a believer, was tied to the lattice door with wire.

リンゴ apple

　リンゴの輪切りを、そのままお煎餅にした、お菓子をいただきました。

　それに刺激され、冷蔵庫にあった少し古いリンゴを輪切りにしてみました。芯は5角形に広がって、それぞれの翼の空洞には種が入っています。躍動する人の形にも見えます。食べれば、なんだか元気がもらえそうです。

　5枚の花びらを持つ花は多く、それぞれは均整の取れた形をしていると思います。5角形に対角線を引くと、五芒星（ごぼうせい）が現れます。一辺の長さと対角線の比は、黄金比になっているので、それが美しく感じられる要因かもしれません。

　Someone gave me a cracker directly made from a round slice of an apple.

　Inspired by this sweet, I cut an old apple in the refrigerator into round slices. The core was pentagonal and each wing cavity contained seeds.

It looks like a person bouncing. If I eat it, it seems that I will get some energy.

　There are many flowers which have five petals, and I think each one has a well-proportioned shape. If you draw a diagonal line on the pentagon, a five-pointed star will appear. The ratio of the length of one side to the diagonal line is the golden ratio, which may be the reason why I feels beautiful.

猫 cat

　夜中に、猫の声と思われる断末魔の叫びが、聞こえて目が覚めました。隣の空き地では、何が起こっていたのだろう。私は、夢を見ていたわけではありません。

　At dead of night, I was awakened by the sound of a death cry that could be the cat's cry. I wonder what was going on in the adjacent tussock then. I wasn't dreaming at that time.
