牡丹(ボタン) peony

　一つ目の写真のボタンは、胡蝶の舞と呼ばれる希少な品種です。私には、そっと燃え続ける炎のようにも見えます。

　The peony in the first picture is a rare variety called Kocho-no-mai, which means "butterfly dance" in Japanese. I also feel it seems to be a flame that is slowly burning.

ダッチアイリス Dutch iris

　路地の乾燥した地面に咲くダッチアイリスです。花が小さく葉が細い特徴があるので、ふくよかな雰囲気持つジャーマンアイリスに比べると、繊細さを感じます。

　These Dutch irises are blooming on the dry ground in an alleyway. It has small flowers and slender leaves, so Dutch iris feels delicate compared to German iris which has plump atmosphere.

痩靫(ヤセウツボ) common broomrape

　ヤセウツボは、葉も葉緑素も持たないので、自分で光合成をして、養分を作ることができません。アカツメクサやシロツメクサなどの植物の根に、自分の根を突き刺すようにして養分を吸い取ります。つまり、寄生寄生植物です。葉緑素を持たないので、色は少し赤みがかった薄い茶色をしており、見た目は少し薄気味悪いです。

　Because common broomrape has neither leaves nor chlorophyll, it cannot make nutrients by doing photosynthesis by itself. Their roots penetrate the roots of plants like red clover and white clover to absorb nutrients. Simply put, it's a parasitic plant. Due to its lack of chlorophyll, its color is tan and it appears a bit creepy.

八重桜(ヤエザクラ) yaezakura(double cherry blossoms)

　八重桜は一つのサクラの品種ではなく、花弁が幾重にも重なる品種の総称です。開花の期間はここ関東では、4月上旬から下旬とsomei-yoshinoに比べると長いです。花弁が多く花は大きめなので、ふくよかな感じがします。

　Yaezakura refers to a group of cherry blossom varieties that have multiple layers of petals, not just one specific variety. In the Kanto region, the blooming period is longer than that of Somei Yoshino (cherry trees), lasting from early to late April. Because the flowers have many petals and are relatively large, they have a plump appearance.

花蘇芳(ハナズオウ) Chinese redbud

　小さくて赤紫色の花が、直に枝に密集して咲くので、とても目立ちます。花は葉より先行して咲きますが、この写真では花とハート形の葉の両方を見ることができます。

　The dense clusters of small, reddish-purple flowers that bloom directly on the branches are very noticeable. Although the flowers bloom before the leaves appear, this photo shows both the flowers and the heart-shaped leaves.

ガーベラ gerbera daisy

　草むらの陰から急に現れた、色鮮やかなガーベラに一瞬びっくりしました。

　The bright gerbera daisies that suddenly appeared behind the grass in the flowerbed caused me to be startled for a moment.

金魚草(キンギョソウ) snapdragon

　キンギョソウの名前は、花の姿が金魚の形や金魚の口に似ていることに由来します。英名のスナップドラゴンは、パクッと噛む竜の口に似ていることによります。文化圏の違いで何に見えるのか異なるのは興味深いです。
　キンギョソウは、下から上へ順に開花して、穂状にたくさんの花を咲かせます。一番下の花が、ちょうど開花したところです。

　The name snapdragon comes from its resemblance to a dragon's mouth that snaps close. In Japan, it is called goldfishgrass because the shape of the flower resembles that of a goldfish or its mouth. It's fascinating how cultural backgrounds can influence the appearance of things.
　Snapdragons produce numerous flowers in a spike-like arrangement as they bloom sequentially from bottom to top. The flower that is the lowest has just opened.

姫金盞花(ヒメキンセンカ) field marigold

　鮮やかな朱色の花は、2〜3cmと小さいけれど群がって咲くので、遠くからでも目立ちます。日本語名である姫金盞花は、小さな黄金色をした酒を飲む器を意味します。

　The bright vermilion flowers are small (2〜3cm) but bloom in clusters, so they stand out even from a distance. The Japanese name for this flower is "hime-kin-sen-ka, 姫金盞花", which means a small, golden-colored sake cup.

 

 

豆梨(マメナシ) callery pear

　密集して咲く満開の花の白さが際立っています。この木は、梨系だと思いますが、食用になるナシなのか豆ナシなのか判断がつきません。花のサイズが2.5cmと小さいこと、そして果物好きの不心得者が、容易にアクセスできる場所に育っているので、豆梨と結論づけます。

　The whiteness of these flowers is striking as they are currently in full bloom. I think this tree is a type of pear tree, but I can't tell if it's a regular eatable pear or a callery pear. The small flower size at 2.5 cm and the fact that it grows in an easily accessible location for indiscreet fruit lovers, I conclude it is a callery pear tree.

水仙(スイセン)

　花壇でもない空き地に水仙が何点か咲いています。誰が何を思って植えたのでしょう。

　Several daffodils are blooming in a vacant lot that is not even a flowerbed. I wonder who planted them and  thinking what.

ロールシャッハテスト Rorschach test

　ロールシャッハ・テストは、90年以上の歴史を持つ心理検査です。その検査方法は、左右対称のインクのシミが何に見えるかを尋ね、その回答から性格や感情、思考の偏りなどを分析します。
　ところで、なぜ左右対称の絵を使うのでしょう。左右対称は安定した構造であり、それが絵の場合は動物に見えなくもなく、意識の集中が行いやすいからのようです。

　上の図は、ティーパックをカップから取り出して、紙の上に置いた時に、偶然できたお茶のシミです。下の図は、それを左右対称に加工してみました。安定感が増し、意識の集中が行いやすくなったように感じます。

　The Rorschach test is a psychological test with more than 90 years of history. The test involves asking what test subjects see in symmetrical ink stains, and then analyzing their personality, emotions, and cognitive biases based on their responses.
　By the way, why do testers use symmetrical images? Symmetry is a stable structure, and when seen in images, it can resemble an animal, which seems to make it easier to focus on.

　The image above shows a tea stain that was by chance formed when a tea bag was removed from a cup and placed on a piece of paper. The image below is partly the same as the image above, but it has been transformed to be symmetrical. I find it easier to concentrate on the latter and feel more secure.

　見ごろの時期も過ぎましたが、幹に寄り添うように一輪の花が咲いていました。

　Although the best season for viewing has passed, a single flower was still in bloom, nestled against the trunk.

桜散る cherry blossoms falling

　桜の花びらが水面に散ると、花筏と呼ばれるのはよく知られています。それでは、地面に散るのはどのように呼ばれるのでしょう。花むしろや桜の絨毯といいます。風に舞うは、言わずと知れた花吹雪ですね。

　Cherry blossom petals scattered on the surface of the water are referred to as a flower-raft, it is well known depict in Japanese. What do you call it when it scatters on the ground? It's called a flower-mat or a flower-carpet. Everyone knows that these fluttering petals are called a flower-breeze. There's a euphemism that says cherry blossoms bloom when you pass an exam, and fall when you fail.

　長年この時期になると、私は満開の時を予測して可能であれば、この桜を見に来ています。落枝の危険があるのでしょうか、少しずつ枝が伐採されており、木の勢いが次第に弱まってくるのを感じます。でも、まだまだ見ごたえあります。

　For many years at this time of year, I have predicted when they will be in full bloom and have come to see the cherry tree if possible. Perhaps due to the risk of branches falling, some branches are being cut off gradually, and I can sense that the tree's vitality is gradually weakening. But seeing them is still much worth it.

糸桜(イトザクラ) ito zakura

　写真は花の部分だけなので、全体像が分かりませんが、この桜もシダレザクラです。シダレザクラは、枝が垂れ下がる桜の総称で何種類もあります。この桜の名前は糸桜です。如何にも枝垂れるをイメージする名前です。

　Although this photo only displays the flowers, this is also a weeping cherry tree. Weeping cherry tree is a general term for cherry trees with drooping branches. There are many varieties. The name of this cherry tree "ito zakura" means a "thread-cherry tree" in Japanese, which evokes the image of a drooping.

　しなやかに地面近くまで垂れ下がった枝が、風にそよぐ姿に風情を感じます。

　The supple branches that hang low to the ground and sway in the wind convey a sense of beauty and charm.

サプライズティー surprise tea

　銭葵（ゼニアオイ）の花びらのハーブティーは、熱湯を注いだときは、鮮やかな青色があらわれ、時間と共に色が変わります。最後に、レモンを加えるとまた違った色になります。どうぞ色の変化をお楽しみください。

　The herbal tea made from mallow petals reveals a vibrant blue color when hot water is poured, and the color gradually changes over time. Finally, adding lemon will change the color again. Take pleasure in the changing colors.

風信子(ヒヤシンス) hyacinth

　線路端にピンクのヒアシンスが咲いています。電車が通るたびに風圧で揺さぶられます。
　
　少し前のことになりますが、ハローベスト (Halo Vest)と呼ばれる医療装具を着けた患者さんが、同じ病室にいました。ハローベストは、重度の頸椎骨折や損傷に対し、頭部と胴体を完全に固定し、首がぐらつかないようにする装具です。頸椎手術前の数ヶ月間使用し、その間に首の骨の癒合の促進を狙います。最初にこれを見たときは、その特殊な形状に驚きました。
　装具を固定するには、ドリルで頭蓋骨を削り、そこにネジで締め付けます。ドリルで穴を削るときは麻酔をかけますが、後日、ネジのゆるみをとるために、まし締めを何度かするときは麻酔を使いません。このときは、強烈に痛いそうです。

　どのような状況で、首の骨を折ったのか、衝撃受けたお話しだったので、簡単に触れておきます。建物内の設備の点検中に、階段から転落しました。運悪く階段の下には溝があり、そこに頭が挟まり、そこを支点に体が回転したそうです。
　現場は地下室で、普段人が来る所ではないので、このままでは死んでしまうと、必死に地上に這い出たそうです。最初に運ばれた病院では、手の施しようがなかったため、専門医の居るこの病院に再搬送されて来ました。

　Pink hyacinth is blooming by a railway track.  It sways from the wind pressure every time a train passes by.

　A little while ago, but there was a patient in the same hospital room who was wearing a medical brace called a halo vest. A halo vest is a support used to completely immobilize the head and body in cases of severe neck spine fractures or injuries, preventing the neck from wobbling. It is used in a few months leading up to cervical spine surgery to promote the bones union. When I first saw it, I was surprised by its unusual shape.
　To attach it to the head, drill a hole in the skull and screw it into it.
The patient will be anesthetized when drilling the head, but anesthetizing won't be operated when to re-tighten the screw each times to remove the looseness.　This re-tightening procedure is extremely painful.

　I would like to briefly mention what kind of situation caused him to break his neck.　He told me that he fell down the stairs while inspecting the building's equipment. Unfortunately,  there was a ditch at the floor, and his head got stuck there, and his body turned around using the point as a fulcrum.
　The scene was on a basement floor, a place where people don't normally go. He desperately crawled to the above ground, realizing he would die if he stayed there. There was nothing they could do at the hospital where he was taken first, so he was re-transferred to this hospital where there are specialists.

 

 

ルピナス Lupin

　ルピナスはマメ科の植物です。古くは、食料や肥料として利用されていましが、今では空間を華やかにする目的で、栽培されるようになりました。
　ルピナスに限りませんが、花を見ていると心が安らぐのは、脳の扁桃体活動が抑制され、ストレスホルモンが低下するからだそうです。扁桃体を落ち着かせる他の方法として、深呼吸や冷水で顔を洗うとよいと言われています。私は、今は車の運転はできませんが、赤信号で止まった時は、深呼吸をする良い機会だと思い実践していました。

　Lupins are members of the legume family. 
They were once used as food and fertilizer, but nowadays they are grown to enhance spaces.
　Looking at flowers, not only lupines, can bring peace of mind because it inhibits amygdala activity in the brain and reduces stress hormone levels.
Deep breathing and washing your face with cold water are also believed to be effective ways to calm the amygdala.
Although I can't drive a car now, I used to think stopping at red lights as a good opportunity to take a deep breath, and I have done that.
