海浜植物のハマボウフウが、砂浜に生えていました。食用になり、すき焼きに葉を入れて食べると、芳香と少し苦みがあり美味しいらしいです。少し葉を摘んで帰れば良かった。
The coastal plant Japanese beach silvertop was growing on the beach. It is edible, so apparently if you add its leaves to Sukiyaki, it makes for a delicious dish, offering a pleasant aroma and a slight bitterness. It would have been better if I had brought back some leaves.
見た目深みのある青紫色のアサガオを写したのですが、赤紫の色で写っていました。私のデジタルカメラは、青紫の再現が苦手で、実際より赤みが強く記録されます。
それはさておき、アサガオの花の色は、時間とともに変化します。朝に青紫色で咲いていても、夕方に近づくと赤紫色に変化していきます。これは細胞内のpH（水素イオン濃度）が変化することによるものです。
機会があれば、タイムラプス撮影をして、花の色の変化を確認してみたいと思います。
My photo of morning glories ended up being a reddish-purple color instead of the what I saw deep blue-violet. My digital camera has a weak reproducing blue-violet tones, so they come out with a stronger reddish tint than they actually are.
That a side, the morning glory flower's color varies with time. Even if they bloom in a blue-violet hue in the morning, they gradually change to a reddish-purple color as evening approaches. This is caused by a change in the intracellular pH (hydrogen ion concentration).
If I get the chance, I’d like to try time-lapse photography to see how the colors of the flowers changing.

ノウゼンカズラの雌しべの先端は、薄く平べったい「しゃもじ」のような形をしており、蛇が口を開けたように2枚に分かれています。さらに、内側は花粉を受け止めるために粘着性があります。この雌しべに、何かが触れると口は閉じます。これは、受粉を確実にするための仕掛けです。
こんな仕掛けがあるのに、日本ではノウゼンカズラの花は、1〜2日で全体（含 雌しべ）がポロっと落ちてしまいます。つまり、種は作られません。進化の過程で、生殖機能は形骸化しました。挿し木や株分け、地下茎で増やせるので心配は不要です。
ポロっと花が落ちる花でも、雌しべが残るものは種を作ります。
The tip of the Trumpet Vine's pistil is shaped like a thin, flat rice paddle and is split in two, resembling a snake opening its mouth. Furthermore, the inside is sticky so as to catch pollen. When something touches this pistil, the mouth closes. This mechanism is designed to ensure pollination.
Despite having such a system, the flowers in Japan drop off with the pistil after just a day or two. In other words, the seeds do not bear fruit. In the course of evolution, reproductive organs have become a mere formality. There is no need to worry, as they can be propagated via cuttings, division, or rhizomes.
Flowers that fell off petals but keep their pistils generate seeds.

葛飾北斎が描いた錦絵の一つに、百合の花があります。このブログの過去記事では、百合の花の特長を2回に分けて書きました。一つは、一昨日に書いた、雄しべの先端に付いた葯は、成長に応じて向きが変わることです。もう一つは、今年の6月13日の、花びらの付き方とその数です。
この絵においては、葯は単に点として描かれているだけです。そして、花びらは実際の百合は6弁ですが、絵では5つしかありません。写真で写したように、正確さを求めていませんが、写生的に描く生物は、もっとリアルな描写にならないかと思います。
ほぼ同時期に描かれた代表作”冨嶽三十六景”の中の1枚に、”神奈川沖浪裏”（かながわおきなみうら）があります。その作品は、過度の変形、誇張や簡略化が行われていますが、全く違和感なく見る人を惹きつける、素晴らしい作品だと思います。
One of the artworks in Katsushika Hokusai's "Nishiki-e", a multicolor woodblock print, features lily flowers. In earlier blog entries, I wrote about the characteristics of lily flowers, covering the topic in two articles. One is what I wrote the day before yesterday, as the stamens develop, the anthers at their tips alter their direction. Another point is the method of petal attachment and their count, as detailed on June 13 this year.
In this print, the anthers are depicted simply as dots. And regarding the numbers of petals—while a real lily has six, there are only five in the painting. I'm not striving for the precision captured in a photo, but I believe that when sketching living thing, the result should be made more realistic.
There is a his masterpiece "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" in the “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” series, which was created around the same time as a "Lily".
トマトを横に輪切りにすると、末広十字の形をした白い部分が現れます。末広十字とは、端にいくほど幅が広くなる紋章に使われる形状のことです。トマトの内部は、いくつかの部屋に分かれています。その部屋が4つある場合は、白い部分が十文字になります。４つ以外の場合は、星形です。部屋は普通3〜6個あります。
部屋の中はゼリー状の物質で満たされており、その中に種が存在しています。このゼリー状の物質は、種が発芽するのを抑制する、植物ホルモンを含んでいます。そのお陰で、発芽に最適な春が来るまで、種は休眠状態です。
自然の仕組みは、知れば知るほど面白いです。
ところで、トマトは野菜か果物か、どちらでしょうか。この問題をめぐって、19世紀の末にアメリカで裁判が行われています。その背景は、野菜の輸入には関税が課されましたが、果物には課されないという状態でした。政府と輸入業者の戦いだったのです。結果は、トマトは野菜であるとの判決でした。判決理由は、野菜畑で作られるものは野菜で、果樹園で作られるものは果物でした。なんだか、スジが通っているようで、論理的ではない感じがします。
さて、今の日本では、キュウリやナスと同様に、トマトは野菜と分類されています。しかし、植物学の分野では、子房が発達して種子を含む実はすべて果物とみなされます。種無しトマトもありますが・・・どちらにしろ、美味しければよいです。
When you cut a tomato crosswise, a white cross-patty pattern appears. The inside of a tomato is divided into several chambers. If there are four such rooms, the white area forms a cross shape. If the number is anything other than four, it is a star shape. The typical count is usually between three and six rooms.
The room is filled with a jelly-like substance, and seeds are present within it. This substance contains plant hormone that inhibit seed germination. Thanks to the hormone, the seeds remain dormant until spring arrives when the ideal time for germination.
The more one learn about workings of nature, the more fascinating they become.
By the way, is a tomato a vegetable or a fruit? A court case concerning this issue took place in the U.S. at the end of the 19th century. The background to this was a situation where tariffs were imposed on vegetable imports, but not on fruit. It was a battle between the government and the importers. The result was a ruling that the tomato is a vegetable. The ground for the decision was that crops grown in vegetable fields are vegetables, while those grown in orchards are fruits. It somehow seems to make sense, yet it doesn't feel logical.
Now, in Japan today, tomatoes are classified as vegetables, just like cucumbers and eggplants. However, in the field of botany, any crop containing seeds that develops from an ovary is considered a fruit. There are seedless tomatoes, too... but either way, it doesn’t matter as long as they're delicious.
花糸の先に付いている葯（ヤク）には、たっぷり花粉が溜まっているようです。葯はまだ花粉を出す前なので、花糸と葯は平行に寄り添ったI字型になっています。葯は花粉を出す準備ができると、回転して花糸に対してT字型をとります。ちなみに、雄しべとは、葯と花糸の２つの部分から成り立っています。
花粉がめしべについて受粉が行われると、花の劣化は急速に進み、花の持ちが著しく悪くなります。それは、種を作ることにエネルギーを集中するからです。花を長くもたせたい場合は、葯が回転する前に、取ってしまうことです。引っ張れば簡単に取れます。
The anthers at the tip of the filaments appear to be full of pollen. Currently, the anthers haven't released pollen, keeping the filaments and anthers parallel to each other in an I-shape. When the anther is ready to release pollen, it rotates to form a T-shape (versatile anther) relative to the filament. Incidentally, a stamen is composed of two sections: the anther and the filament.
Once pollen lands on the pistil and pollination occurs, the flower deteriorates rapidly, and its lifespan is significantly reduced. That's due to their concentration on seed production. If you want the flowers to last longer, remove the anthers before they rotate. They come off easily by pulling them.
ミヤコワスレは、日本原産の多年草です。素朴なで可憐な花を咲かせるので、江戸時代から茶花（ちゃばな）として親しまれてきました。

"Miyakowasure" is a perennial plant native to Japan. Because it produces simple and dainty flowers, it has been cherished as a Chabana since the Edo period.
Chabana refers to the flowers displayed in the alcove of a tea room during the tea ceremony, as well as the way they are arranged. Based on Sen no Rikyu's teaching, "Flowers should be as they are in the wild," we value expressing the simple, unadorned beauty of nature.
Sen no Rikyu was a historical tea master in the 16th century who established the Wabi-cha style of the Japanese tea ceremony.

千利休の考案した茶室の広さは、この絵よりずっと狭いものでした。The tea room, crafted by Sen no Rikyu, was significantly less spacious compared to this photo.
花を羽交い絞めしているように見える、6本の紐に見えるのは雄しべです。花粉を出しきってしまったので、もう干からびたような状態です。雄しべは早く成熟するため、雌しべよりも先に萎れてしまう。それは、雄しべの花粉は他の花の受粉に使われることになり、同花受粉を避けるためです。
The six string-like structures that appear to be holding the flower down are actually the stamens. Having released all their pollen, so they are now in a shriveled state. Because the stamens mature earlier, they wither before the pistils. This is because the pollen from the stamens is used to pollinate other flowers, thereby preventing self-pollination.
