スイートアフトン sweet afton

　"アメリカ"で作出されたバラですが、名前の由来はなぜか"スコットランド"の南西部を流れるのアフトン川です。
　「アフトン川の流れ」という"スコットランド"民謡は、"アメリカ"の歌曲だそうです。

　This rose got its name from the Afton River, which flows through the southwest part of "Scotland," even though it was created in America.
　The "Scottish folk" song Flow Gently Sweet Afton is said to be an "American song." 

オクラ okura

　オクラの原産地は、アフリカ北東部です。熱帯地方では、多年草なので毎年繰り返し実をつけます。一方、日本では冬が寒いので、越冬できず一年草です。
　温暖化が進めば、日本でもオクラは多年草になる可能性があります。

　オクラは花が咲いた後、実は上向きに付く特徴があります。収穫のタイミングを逃すと、下の写真のように、大きく硬くなります。茶色になっているのは、鉄分が多く含まれるので、錆ではないかと思います。

　Okra is native to northeastern Africa. In tropical regions, it is a perennial plant that produces fruit every year. On the other hand, in Japan, where winters are cold, it cannot survive the winter and is an annual plant. 
　Okra could become a perennial plant in Japan as global warming progresses.

　Okra has the unique feature that the fruit grows upward after the flowers wither. The fruit will become large and hard if you don't harvest it on time, as shown in the photo below. It's probable that the brown color is rust due to its high iron content.

犬酸漿(イヌホウズキ)の実 berries of black nightshade

　今日は時期としては、ずいぶん寒い一日でした。地球温暖化はどこへ行ってしまったのでしょう。

　三つ前の投稿で、イヌホウズキの花の写真をアップしました。そこでは、まだ実が生っていませんでした。今日は、たまたま通りがかった別の場所で、たわたに実った木を見つけました。

　For this time of year, it was quite cold today. I wonder where global warming has gone.

　I have shared a photo of black nightshade flowers in the post three posts ago. There was no fruit present yet. While passing by another place today, I came across a tree full of berries.

箒草(ホウキグサ) Mexican burningbush

　こんもり膨らんだホウキグサが、畑の縁にいくつか並んでいます。その一つが割れています。猫が飛び込んだのでしょうか。
　ホウキグサ（草）は、ホウキギ（木）とも呼ばれます。さて、この植物は草なのでしょうか、あるいは木なのでしょうか。正解は、1年草の草です。

　There are several Mexican burningbushes at the edge of the field. One of them split open. Maybe a cat jumped in?
　The Mexican burning bush is referred by the Japanese name "broom-making grass" or "broom-making tree". So, is this plant a grass or a tree? The answer is a grass that grows annually.

アカザ葛(アカザカズラ) madeira vine

　アカザカズラは、別名オカワカメとも呼ばれます。その厚味のある葉を茹でると、ぬめりが出てワカメ のような食感となります。
　この写真を撮るのに、3か所蚊に刺されました。

　Madeira vine has the alias name "land-wakame seaweed" in Japan. Boiling the thick leaves results in their becoming slimy and having a texture similar to that of wakame seaweed.
　I got three mosquito bites while taking these photos.

犬酸漿(イヌホウズキ) black nightshade

　果実ができつつあるイヌホオズキです。
　植物名につく接頭辞の"イヌ"の意味は、"役に立たない"という意味です。犬には大変失礼なことです。"異なるもの"と解釈する説明を最近見ました。犬好きには朗報です。

　The black nightshade is beginning to produce fruits.
　The Japanese name for black nightshade is "dog-round cherry." The prefix "dog" in plant names is said to mean "useless" in Japan, but I've recently come across explanations that interpret it as "something different". This is a good tendency for dog-persons. :-)

ルドベキア blackeyed Susan

　石垣と舗装の隙間からルドベキアが育っていました。

　The gaps between the stone wall and the pavement were home to blackeyed Susans' growth.
