ウイルスとは何かを、インターネットで調べましたので、その内容を簡単にまとめました。

ウイルスの構造は、中心にある遺伝子情報を持つ核酸（以降、核酸と省略）と、それを取り囲むカプシドと呼ばれるタンパク質の殻から構成された粒子です。細胞を持たない単純な構造の粒子なので、単独では生きることも、子孫を残すこともできません。他の細胞に入り込んでのみ存続することができます。

ウイルスがヒトの体につくと、そのウイルスはヒトの細胞に侵入します。ウイルスに侵入された細胞は、そのウイルスの核酸を細胞内で、大量にコピーし始めます。次々に作られた大量の核酸は、カプシドに囲われ、ウイルスとなって細胞の外へ放出されます。これらの大量のウイルスは、他の細胞に侵入します。ウイルスを大量生産した細胞は、やがては破裂します。このようにして、ウイルスは増殖していきます。

このウイルスは、必ずしもヒトに病気を起こす訳ではありません。人は一生の間知らぬ間に、200ほどのウイルスに感染するそうです。

ウイルスは自分で子孫をつくることができないので、生物でないという意見が主流を占めています。生物でもないのに生存期間があるのはおかしな話ですが、インフルエンザウイルスの生存期間は、およそ8時間、コロナウイルスは、9日間です。衣服についたウイルスよりも、つるつるの金属やプラスチックについている方が、長生きできるそうです。

I surfed the Web to check up what viruses are. I've summarized the results below.

The structure of a virus is a simple particle consisting of a "central nucleic acid with genetic information", hereinafter, abbreviated to genetic material, and a protein shell called a capsid that surrounds it. A virus is simple particle that has no cells and cannot live by itself and cannot leave offspring. It can only survive by entering other living thing's cell.

When the virus reaches the human body, it enters a human cell. The cell begins copying many genetic materials of the virus inside of the cell. Many genetic materials, which are generated one after another, are released from the cell. At that time each genetic material is surrounded by a capsid and becomes a virus. These new viruses invade other human cells. The cell that produced many viruses eventually burst. By repeating this, virus multiplies.

Viruses do not always cause human diseases. It is said that humans are infected with about 200 viruses during their lifetime.

The prevailing opinion is that viruses are not living things because they cannot produce their own offspring. But it is strange that it has a life span even though it is not a living thing, but the survival time of influenza virus is about 8 hours, and that of coronavirus is 9 days. Viruses on slippery metals and plastics seem to survive longer than on clothing.
