Mexican petunia

The texture of the petals of Mexican Petunia resembles that of "chirimen fabric", and combined with the light purple color, it creates a traditional Japanese atmosphere. However, this plant is native to tropical America.
※ chirimen(縮緬) fabric: It's a Japanese fabric with a unique textured and bumpy appearance created through the use of heavily twisted threads, commonly utilized for garments like Kimono, wrapping cloths known as Furoshiki(風呂敷), and traditional items.

Japanese persimmon / kaki

In Japan, it's common to see persimmons growing on trees. In Europe, however, commercial cultivation of persimmons is limited mainly to warm regions along the Mediterranean coast, such as Spain, southern Italy, and Portugal. For that reason, I’ve heard that people living in the United Kingdom, Germany, northern France, and the Nordic countries rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to see persimmons growing on trees.
Even in Japan, there are many fruits that we eat regularly, even though we rarely get the chance to see them growing on trees or in grasses. For example, banana, pineapple, avocado, and grapefruit.
Different places, different ways of living, doesn't it?

The "Hana-Iso-Giku" is a natural hybrid of the "Iso-Giku" and a cultivated variety of chrysanthemum.
Both "Hana-Iso-Giku" and "Iso-Giku" are Japanese names. Their scientific names are "Chrysanthemum pacificum" and "Chrysanthemum × marginatum," respectively.
The flowers of the "Hana-Iso-Giku" have ray florets around the flower, which the "Iso-Giku" does not have. These ray florets are usually white or yellow, but in the flower shown in the photo, a pale red color stands out, especially when the flower is still in bud. It must have inherited the genes of cultivated chrysanthemums.

Japanese Silver Grass is a grass species that epitomizes the atmosphere of autumn in Japan.
There are various materials used for thatched roofs, but Japanese Silver Grass is the most common. Its lifespan is approximately 15 to 30 years. The thatched roofs of the gassho-style houses in Shirakawa-go (Shirakawa Village, Gifu Prefecture) are made primarily of Japanese Silver Grass, preserving a traditional Japanese landscape.

The flowers of the Blue Morning Glory are a vivid blue-purple in the morning, but as the time goes on, they change to a reddish-purple. While Morning Glories wilt during the morning, the Blue Morning Glory remains in bloom even in the afternoon. Although it is a popular plant, it is highly invasive and has been designated as a priority invasive alien species on the Ministry of the Environment’s "List of Alien Species with Potential to Cause Adverse Effects on Ecosystems in Japan."

What looks like moss clinging to the gravestone is lichen. There are approximately 1,800 species of lichen growing in Japan. This is a symbiotic relationship in which a fungus hosts algae within its body; the fungus provides the algae with a place to live and water, and the algae shares with the fungus the nutrients it produces through photosynthesis. There are several forms of symbiosis, though this particular one is called mutualism, where both parties gain from each other. The relationships between ants and aphids, hermit crabs and sea anemones, and so on are also examples of mutualism.
At the temple where this gravestone stands, there is a plaque detailing the legend of Bodhisattva Pure Practices, which states that if you thoroughly wash the ailing part of your body, the Bodhisattva will take your place. The temple office provides "scrub brushes" for washing your body.
Lichen grows even in harsh environments such as the Antarctic and Arctic regions, as well as the Himalayas and the Andes, but I think it is vulnerable to being scrubbed with the scrub brush.

This mantis doesn't seem to be threatening me, and it doesn't look well. It seems that she will lay her eggs and pass away immediately afterward.
Females lay their eggs on concrete block walls just as they do on tree branches.
It is said that female mantises eat the males before laying their eggs. That's true, but apparently only about 10% of the males end up as prey. This means that most of the males have managed to escape.
The males seem unwilling to offer self-sacrifices for their offspring.

In the past, statues of Ninomiya Kinjiro were widely installed in elementary schools across the country because they were regarded as symbols of moral education emphasizing diligence and thrift.
Although they’re rarely seen these days, I happened to pass by the entrance of the elementary school where a statue of Ninomiya Kinjiro was on display. But that statue looks a bit off - differing from how I remember it. When I looked closer, I saw that his left hand was missing. Also, the part of the leg below the knee is thick, like a base. I read the inscription next to the statue and understood what had happened.
On April 24, 1945, the school building was completely destroyed by an air raid carried out by bombers(Mission 96: 101 B-29); three teachers lost their lives, the statue was destroyed, the hand holding the book was shattered along with the book, and the body of the statue snapped at the knees.
The statue was restored to convey the horrors of the bombing to future generations and to express the hope that war will never happen again. (Toyoizumi Kiichi, Rep. of the Volunteer Restoration Grp.)
Although the inscription did not mention the children’s casualties, my investigation revealed that an air raid warning had been issued that day and the children had been sent home.  But although no children died at school, several died after returning home.

キクの学名のChrysanthemum(クリサンセマム)を省略した呼び名でした。

Garden Mums have clusters of small flowers that bloom in a round, dome-shaped cluster. The origins of Garden Mums can be traced back to Japanese chrysanthemums, which were introduced to Europe and the United States in the late Edo period, where they were bred and then re-imported to Japan.
I used to think that the "mam" at the end of "Garden Mam" meant "mother," but I was wrong.  It was a shortened form of the scientific name "Chrysanthemum".

Sorghum is a nutrient-rich grain that contains about nine times as much dietary fiber, about five times as much magnesium, about three times as much iron, and about three times as much fat as white rice. It’s often said that if you prioritize health and nutrition, you should choose Sorghum, and if you prioritize digestibility and ease of eating, White Rice is recommended; however, if you also take taste and texture into account, it’s said to be best to mix a small amount of Sorghum into your White Rice (1 tablespoon of Sorghum per 150g of White Rice).

Madeira vine

Standing nearly 2.5 meters tall, this Madeira Vine displays vigorous growth. This is so nutritious: it is called as “better than a hundred medicines” in China's Yunnan Province. Although it is native to South America, it was introduced to Japan via China.
It is rich in minerals such as magnesium, calcium, zinc, and copper, as well as vitamin A and folate (vitamin B9). Like spinach and bamboo shoots, it contains high levels of oxalic acid, so it must be blanched before eating.

(Haza-Gake) is a traditional method of drying rice ears without the use of machinery. This is a labor-intensive method in which the harvested rice is bundled and hung upside down on a rack called a "Haza" to dry in the sun. "Gake" means to hook.
It is said that hanging the rice upside down allows nutrients to flow down into the grains, and exposure to sunlight increases the levels of amino acids and sugars, resulting in a more delicious flavor.

Japanese persimmon / kaki

The autumn colors of the persimmon leaves are mottled. There is a variation in how people perceive it; some see it as beautiful, others do not.
As autumn deepens, four different pigments within a thick persimmon leaf undergo separate changes, creating a mosaic pattern. The green chlorophyll gradually disappears. As chlorophyll levels decrease, the yellow color of the carotenoids becomes more emphasized. Red anthocyanins are newly creating. The brown tannins oxidize and turn into dark spots. It is fascinating that various chemical reactions take place inside leaves.
Mold can also create mottled patterns. The round spots - with a brown center and black or green borders - are caused by mold.

Purple Heart has a deep purple color because it is rich in a pigment called anthocyanin. The plant is native to the coastal regions of Mexico, where the sun is intense. To protect itself from intense ultraviolet radiation, anthocyanins assume a significant function.
It is said that when grown in the shade, the anthocyanins levels decrease and the chlorophylls levels increase relatively, causing the whole plant to have a greenish hue.

The name  "No-giku (野菊)"  is a general term, not the name of a specific variety. However, I feel it is fitting to call this chrysanthemum, which grow naturally on a bank,  "No-giku". The kanji character "野" in "野菊" means "simplicity" in this context.
The sparsely arranged tongue-flowers add this flower an even more neat and clean air.

Why are the fruits of the Purple Beautyberry purple? This is so that birds will eat the fruit and carry the seeds far away. Since plants can't move, they rely on birds.
Humans have trichromatic color vision, which allows them to perceive three colors - red, green, and blue - but many birds have tetrachromatic color vision, which allows them to perceive the near-ultraviolet region in addition to these three colors. For that reason, the purple berries are said to stand out to birds.
How wonderfully intertwined the mechanisms of nature are!

It has been mistakenly believed that Tall Goldenrod pollen causes allergic rhinitis. Even though the real culprit is Ragweed. Both species often intermingle in the same area, forming a large colony. The flowers of Tall Goldenrod are a vivid yellow and very noticeable, while Ragweed flowers are a dull, pale green and go unnoticed. It had come to be mistakenly believed that whenever people came here and developed a runny nose, it was due to the conspicuous Tall Goldenrod.
Tall Goldenrod is an insect-pollinated flower. Insect-pollinated flowers have striking blooms to attract insects. Since insects carry pollen, pollen has some weight and does not remain suspended in the air. On the other hand, Ragweed is a wind-pollinated flower. Wind-pollinated flowers rely on the wind, so a simple appearance is all they need. The wind disperses large amounts of light pollen.
Although the false accusation against the Tall Goldenrod has been cleared, things aren’t exactly going smoothly. Because it has long, horizontal rhizomes underground, it cannot be eradicated by simply cutting off the above-ground parts, and it is designated as potentially invasive alien species. It is a poor plant.
Even Tall Goldenrod has a benefit for people. It can be used as a material used for natural dyeing. It is said that it’s possible to dye natural fabrics a beautiful golden color.

You can see a part of yellow flowers of Tall Goldenrod in the lower right corner.

When we think of spiders, we tend to think of them as creatures that spin webs, but there are also spiders that don’t spin webs. Spiders are classified into two types: web-building spiders, which spin webs, and wandering spiders (hunting spiders), which do not.
Today I’d like to talk about the Jumping Spider, a kind of wandering spider, that lives in my home. It does not look like it's catching any flies, but it might be doing a great job somewhere out of sight.
To catch their prey, they have excellent eyesight and eight eyes around their heads. Specifically, the two prominent eyes at the forefront are noticeable.
Occasionally a tiny wandering spider-about 1 cm long-appears indoors and hops around. The bouncing motion is cute, but there's still something eerie about it. They are also outside. By the way, they don't have strong muscles in their legs for jumping. So, how do they jump? Here's the secret: they jumps by rapidly pumping bodily fluids into there legs and extending them in an instant. With this jumping ability, it can catch prey and escape from enemies. They can leap distances ranging from several to several dozen times their own body length. Just before they jump, they touch the ground with their bottoms and secure one end of the string like a lifeline.
One of the toys I played with as a child was a rubber frog. When you squeeze the pump in your hand, air is pumped through a long tube into the frog’s folded legs, causing them to stretch out straight and make it jump. It's the same principle, isn't it? A toy that is almost identical is still on the market today.
Finally, I would like to say a little about Spider-Man's movements. Since Spider-Man isn't much of a jumper, he uses the web shooter on his wrist to fire threads with pinpoint accuracy at his target locations and propels himself forward using the principle of a pendulum. Even though they're the same spider, their movements are quite different, are not they?
By the way, web-building spiders-such as Joro Spider-generally cannot jump.

Japanese star anise

The entire Japanese Star Anise plant is poisonous, and the fruit and seeds are particularly dangerous. It's tricky because the fruit looks very similar to Chinese Star Anise, which is used in Chinese cuisine. Although fruits of Japanese Star Anise are plants, they are, exceptionally, designated as a highly toxic substance under the Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Control Act. This is because it was mixed into Chinese Star Anise and sold on the market, leading to a fatal accident. Monkshood, which is even more toxic than Japanese Star Anise, is not sold on a market and is therefore not designated as a highly toxic substance.
Since Japanese Star Anise was introduced to Japan along with Buddhism, it has deep ties to Buddhist rituals. It is said that the leaves of Japanese Star Anise were sometimes employed, or were once used, instead of gauze or a brush during the ritual of administering the final sip of water to the dying.
