花水木(ハナミズキ) flowering dogwood

　ハナミズキは排気ガスに対し、ある程度の耐性があるといわれる樹木です。それ故に、私の住む町では街路樹として採用されています。
　さらに排気ガスに強いのは、葉が厚くて硬い木です。例えば、イチョウです。でも最近は、イチョウの街路樹を見かけなくなりました。
　その理由は、大量に葉が散ることや、独特の匂いの実が、道路に落ちて汚すので、敬遠されるようになりました。それに比べると、ハナミズキは、維持管理がしやすい木です。

　Experts say that the flowering Dogwood possesses a certain level of resistance to exhaust emissions. That's why it's now been adopted as a street tree in my town. 
　Trees with leaves that are thick and hard are even more resistant to exhaust. For example, there is a Ginkgo Tree. But lately, I don't see Ginkgo Trees lining the streets as much anymore.
　The reason is that road administrator have come to avoid it because its leaves fall in large quantities and its distinctive-smelling fruit falls onto the road and makes a mess. In comparison, the Flowering Dogwood is a tree that’s easy to maintain.
