吸葛(スイカズラ) Japanese honeysuckle

　スイカズラの2枚の花びらは上下に開き、間からシベが飛び出している様子は、印象に残ります。花の奥には蜜腺があるので、昔の子供たちは、オシロイバナと同様に蜜を吸って遊んでいました。最近の子供たちは、そのような遊びはしないようです。
　19世紀に、J・J・グランヴィルというフランスの風刺画家がいました。その作品に、人だかスイカズラだか分からない、幻想的なリトグラフがあります。その画像も掲載しておきます。

　The two petals of the Japanese Honeysuckle open above and below, and the sight of the stamens sticking out from between them is quite striking. Since there are nectary at the base of the flower, children in the past used to play by sucking the nectar from the back of the picked flowers, just as they did with Four O'clock Fowers. Children these days does not seem to play like that anymore.
　In the 19th century, there was a French caricaturist named J.J. Grandville. In his collection, there is a fantastical lithograph featuring a figure or a Japanese honeysuckle. It is hard to tell which one it is. I’ll include that image here as well.
