夕化粧(ユウゲショウ) rose evening primrose

　ユウゲショウは、道端のまばらな草のなかにあって、ひときわ目を引くピンクの小さな花を咲かせています。名前の由来は、夕方から咲き始めるのと、夕暮れ時に女性が化粧を始める姿を、重ね合わせてたとされています。当地では、午前中から咲き始めます。お化粧に余念がないようです。
　花のイメージとは随分異なりますが、江戸時代の化粧する美人が描かれた、浮世絵を載せておきます。浮世絵のタイトルは今様美人ですが、今となっては古様美人です。

　The rose evening primroses are blooming with small, eye-catching pink flowers among the sparse grass along the roadside. It is said that the name comes from joining up two scenes:  the flowers begin to bloom in the evening, and women apply makeup at dusk . Here, the flowers start blooming in the morning. They seem absorbed in applying makeup.
　Although it’s quite different from the image of the flower, I’ve included an Ukiyo-e print depicting a beauty applying make-up, during the Edo period. The title of the Ukiyo-e is Modern Beauty, but now that the beauty is an Old-Style Beauty.
