紫蘭(シラン) hyacinth orchid

　シランは、ラン科の植物でありながら、手入れがされていない土地でも、強くたくましく増えます。シラン人は居ないくらい、今の時期あちこちで見かけます。
　花に近づいて見ると、花びら（唇弁）にシワになった隆起があることに気が付きます。これは、何のためにあるのでしょう。いろいろな説があります。その一つは、蜂が止まるときの滑り止めだそうです。二つ目は、蜂に蜜がある方向を示す標識だそうです。三つ目は、花弁を物理的に補強する部材だそうです。四つめは、私の考えです。このシワはとても人の目を引きます、同様に、蜂にとっても引き付けられる模様であり、花に蜂を誘引する役割があるというものです。
　自然には、いろいろ隠された秘密があります。的外れであっても、自分なりの考えで、それらを解き明かそうと、チャレンジするのは楽しいです。

　Although Hyacinth orchids belongs to orchid family, they thrive even in unmaintained land. You can see them here and there at this time of the year, so they are widely known. 
　When you watch closely at the petals (labellum, lip petal), you'll find wrinkled ridges. I wonder what the purpose of these is. There are various theories. The first reason is that it prevents bees from slipping when they land on it. The second is that it's a sign to the bees indicating the direction where the honey is. The third is a component that physically reinforces the petal. The fourth is my own theory. These wrinkles are very eye-catching to people, and similarly, they are an attractive pattern for bees, so these serve to draw bees into the flowers.
　Nature has a lot of hidden secrets. Even if I approach is off-target, it's fun to challenge myself to unravel them in my own way.
