金鎖(キングサリ) golden chain

　鮮やかな黄色の花が目を引きます。ところが、その美しさの反面、すべての部位が（特に種子）に毒（アルカロイド）を含んでいます。
　多くの植物が有毒物質を含むのは、次に述べる理由によります。植物は手も足もありません。動物に食べられないようにするためには、防御装置、すなわち動物にとって、有毒な存在になることが必要だった訳です。種（族）の繁栄の観点から、特に種子を守るのは理にかなっていると思います。
　種と同様に、熟す前の果実にも、防衛のため有毒物質を含むものがあります。その昔、林の中で琵琶の木を見つけました。その未熟の実をかじってひどい目にあいました。身近な果物であっても、未熟の果実には注意が必要です。
　自然が作る巧妙な仕組みには、常々驚かされます。

　The bright yellow flowers are visually appealing. Despite their beauty, all parts of the plant (especially the seeds) contain toxins (alkaloids).
　Many plants contain toxic substances for the following reasons.
Plants have neither hands nor feet. In order to avoid being eaten by animals, they needed a defense mechanism, which is to become poisonous to them. From the point of view of the species' prosperity, I believe it makes sense to protect seeds in particular.
　Some unripe fruits, just like seeds, have toxic substances as a defense. I found a loquat tree in the forest long time ago.  After biting its unripe fruit, I suffered the consequences. It's important to be cautious with unripe fruits, even if you're familiar with them.
　The ingenious mechanisms created by nature are always astonishing to me.
