ゴーヤ bitter melon

　切った竹を支柱に仕立てて、ゴーヤのツルを這わせようとしました。ところが、一向に巻き付く様子はありません。太さが適当であれば、支柱の材質にはこだわらないと聞きますが、どうやらゴーヤには支柱に対する好みがあるようです。ゴーヤは、竹は伸びるものと認識しているのかもしれません。しがみついたものに、引っ張られたら困りますから。

　I tried to use a cut bamboo as a stake to make the Bitter melon vines climb. However, it shows no sign of wrapping around at all.
I’ve heard that as long as the stake diameter is suitable, the kind of materials doesn't really matter, but it seems a Bitter melon has own preferences. Bitter melons might perceive bamboo as something that grows up. It would be a problem if the Bitter melon got pulled along by whatever it was clinging to.
