釣浮草(ツリウケソウ、フクシア) fuchsia

　垂れ下がる優雅な姿のフクシアの花です。赤い部分は萼で、紫の部分が花びらです。花から長く突き出ているのはめしべです。おしべはよく見えませんが、めしべの周りに数本が先端をのぞかせています。　赤と紫は、難しい色の組み合わせですが、この花では、独特の妖艶さを出すことに成功しています。この、色使いや造形が、なぜ植物にできるのだろう。
　日本文化において、赤は魔を祓う力があると信じられ、神社の鳥居が赤いのも、災厄を遠ざけるためです。紫は、最も高貴な色であり、天皇や皇族しか身につけられない、最高格式の色でありました。

　Drooping fuchsia flowers possess an elegant appearance. The red parts are the calyces, and the purple parts are the petals. The long protruding from the flower is the pistil. The stamens are not clearly visible, but the tips of them are peeking out around the pistil.
　Red and purple are a challenging color combination, but in this flower, they successfully create a unique, bewitching allure. I wonder how plants manage to achieve such beautiful color combinations and shapes. 
　In Japanese traditions, the hue red is thought to carry strength in repelling malice; the red Torii arches at shrines serve this very function—to safeguard against impending doom. Purple was the noblest of colors—a hue of the highest prestige that could be worn only by the Emperor and members of the Imperial Family.
