百日草(ジニア) zinnia

　高名な植物分類学者のリンネが、早逝した弟子のジン Xinn（Johann Gottfried Xinn/1727 – 1759）にちなんで、この植物をジニア "Zinnia"と名付けました。
　とネットで学びましたが、どうして "Xinn" が "Zinnia" となったのか、調べてみました。
　学名をつくるとき、人名＋ラテン語の接尾辞"-ia"を付けるのは、ルールです。このルールに則ると、"Xinnia" となるはずですが、植物の名前は "Zinnia" です。
　調べた結果は、"Johann Gottfried Xinn" という名前のつづりは誤りで、正しくは "Johann Gottfried Zinn" でした。さらに、Zinnはリンネの弟子でないことも分かりました。
　Zinn はゲッティンゲン大学の植物園長として活躍しましたが、若くして亡くなったので、リンネは彼の偉大な功績を称えようとして、この植物に "Zinnia" という名前を贈ったのです。

　The renowned plant taxonomist Linnaeus named this plant "Zinnia" in honor of his deceased student Johann Gottfried Xinn (1727–1759), who had a short life.
　I learned that online, but I delved into the reason why "Xinn" transformed into "Zinnia." When creating a scientific name, it is a rule to combine a person's name with the Latin suffix "-ia." Following this rule, it should be "Xinnia," but the name of the plant is "Zinnia."
　My investigation indicated that the spelling "Johann Gottfried Xinn" was wrong; it should be "Johann Gottfried Zinn." Additionally, I found out that Zinn was not a student of Linnaeus.
　"Zinn" held the position of director at the Botanical Garden of the University of Göttingen, but he died early; in honor of his significant contributions, Linnaeus named this plant "Zinnia."
