ガクアジサイ lacecap hydrangea

　ガクアジサイの中央部に見える、沢山の小さなブツブツは本来の花です。外側を囲む目立つ、花びらに見えるものは萼です。萼を花びらのようにしたのは、受粉の役割をする昆虫を引き寄せるためです。
　それなら、中央の真の花を、大きくすればよいと思います。でも、そうするには、より多くのエネルギーを必要とするので、昆虫を引き寄せる役割は萼だけにまかせました。
　ガクアジサイも省エネを実践しています。

　The many small bumps visible in the center of the Lacecap Hydrangea are original flowers. The prominent, petal-like parts surrounding the outside are sepals. The sepals are shaped like petals to attract insects that help with pollination.
　If that’s the case, you might think it would be better if the real flower in the center were larger. However, since that would require more energy, the role of attracting insects was left to only calyx. 
　Hydrangeas are practicing energy conservation as well.
