天竺葵(テンジクアオイ:ゼラニウム) geranium

　葉の中からスッと伸びた茎の先で、いくつもの蕾が、四方八方へ広がり、頭を下げています。この姿は、ゼラニウム独特のものです。
　ゼラニウムは、特有の生臭い匂いを放ちます。この臭いを利用して、ゼラニウムを猫よけとして利用できるそうです。ミツバチやチョウなどの昆虫は、その匂いを気にも留めないようで、蜜を吸いにやって来ます。昆虫には、鼻がありませんが、触覚に生えた微細な毛で、匂いを感じるそうです。

　人間には、視覚・聴覚・嗅覚・味覚・触覚の五感があります。そのなかで、嗅覚だけは特別で、脳が過去の記憶や感情と結び付け、匂いを認識するそうです。生臭い匂いも、懐かしい記憶と結びつけることができれば、好感を持たれる香になるかも知れません。

　At the tips of the stems that shoot up from among the leaves, many buds spread out in all directions, their heads bowed. This appearance is unique to Geraniums.
　Geraniums emit a distinctive fishy smell. With this smell, it might serve as a deterrent for cats. But insects such as honeybees and butterflies seem to pay no mind to the smell and come to sip the nectar. Although insects don't have noses,  it's believed that they sense smell through fine hairs on their antennae.

　It is known that humans possess five senses, sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Among these, the sense of smell is unique in that the brain recognizes odors associates with past memories and emotions. Even an fishy smell might become a pleasant scent, if you can associate it with fond memories.
